I only did one VATSIM flight with you guys and it was pretty fun. I don't have my computer otherwise I might join you today. I flew those same airways earlier this year. It would have been fun to take a king air back to CRP and do an "Assault" landing. Make sure you fly down the coast at 300 AGL. You might catch a few nude girls sunbathing

Can Course and Heading knobs on an EHSI be adjusted in FSX through a bind or axis? I'm using the Iris T-6, and the mouse-click/scroll on them is very unresponsive. Can't find a way to bind it yet. Control bindings in FSX are a mess.

Ok, I've got a good hang of Black Shark now. I still have a huge hard on for the A-10 sim though. It's $40 on Steam which would stretch my budget a bit but I want it so bad. Talk me into it. Although in most missions out there you'd rarely use it if only because of the insane amount of things on the ground that will pulverize if you so much think about going below 10k feet asl. But in decent (non-BS) missions, it is fun to use, albeit if you engage a column of armored vehicles, beware of any BMP-2/3s in them: enemies are pretty good when it comes to spot you*, and an enemy equipped with a 30mm autocannon is incredibly deadly. Speaking of the video, the first two-thirds are of a mission actually included in the game, and it's a good one. The music used is the main menu theme. *it can be a bit grating when flying a mission during a starless night and you get hundreds of MANPADs fired at you before you even get close enough to be heard, much less spotted by the infantry on the ground

I punched the button on A-10. How do I become kickass at this. Is that audio really from a campaign mission? Fricken surreal. The black shark campaigns are really, really well done. I loved the first escort where there is an ambush on the convoy from a nearby treeline. Set salvo to high->arm rockets->murder entire forest in one fly over.

The "context sensitive nature" of the HOTAS is kind of scaring me. All I got is a saitek cyborg evo joystick. It doesn't have a hotas but I've been using it with great success for eons. It has a hat, maybe I can use the joystick mapping software by saitek to make the hat context sensitive? It's just weird, in black shark I have a good command for every button and that thing is truly an optimized single seater. I've played around with a-10 a bit and I just can't figure out what to map to the buttons on my joystick. Very different. I am so used to the trim in black shark it's like my brain is broken inside now. I did pull off my first gau-8 run, the bird is so loving maneuverable it blew my mind. This thing can just pull. The cockpit of the black shark is good but that of the a-10 has America, gently caress Yeah written all over it.

Prince Reggie K posted:Are there any open world flight sims? Prefereably with arcade style controls? I have a decent joystick and try and try to get into Sturmovik. I'm able to shoot down enemy bombers usually but I just can't maneuver well enough for dogfights with aircraft my speed or faster. Basically I'd love to play burnout paradise with airplanes. Does this exist? Either of the two Crimson Skies. The XB one or the PC one. Both old. The PC version is the one to get. It's a game set in a weird 40s where america split into multiple squabbling nation states following the great depression. This meant that the road/rail network was destroyed and now everyone hauls cargo via zepellin, which has led to sky piracy. You are a ludicrously daring/dashing air pirate called Nathan Zachary, and after a kind of boring first 3 missions everything you do is completely loving awesome. The whole game has a kind of swashbuckling 40s radio drama feel to it, and I cannot recommend this game highly enough to anyone that likes dogfighting in any capacity. Flight modelling is no more complex than an Ace Combat game on the consoles, the big difference here is that the setting demands that you cant mow down hundreds of random people with a quad missile. You'll sit on someones rear end and put bullets into them, they'll try crazy thrings like flying through caves and hangers to try and shake you, and best of all they'll shout at you over the radio the whole time. (This is best because the characters are uniformly great fun.) and when you shoot them down Zachary will say something incredibly And then the missions are great too, Duelling zepellins as they peek over the clouds, zooming through the hollywood O while filming a movie stunt, Snatching a damsel from the back of a moving train, almost every mission is awesome, although there is the occasional lovely mission (AUTOGYRO) The game isn't freeroaming, but the missions are so fun I can't imagine anyone caring. There are no collectibles or anything like that, beyond unmarked danger zones, which you can fly through to get a screenshot and maybe a newspaper clipping in your between mission scrapbook. The only problem is getting it running on modern PCs. Theres a fanmade nvidia fix, but I think ATI users are outta luck. * CS on the XB is also ok. It IS a freeroaming game, although theres very little to do other than float around and grab collectibles outside of missions. Its as arcadey as a flight game gets though, you drive the planes like a car, click the sticks and move them in patterns to pull off immelmans or magical 180 split S. Youre plane has recharging boost, the badguys have a weather machine and one of the planes can shoot lightning. It's much more of a straight up shooter, you'll mow through hundreds of badguys (who drop health and ammo) and a LOT of missions last well beyond their welcome. It's a decent game, but not a patch on the PC one, to be honest though, it's bizarre indiana jones plot is ludicrous enough to be worth a look. (It's much sillier than the PC game. On the PC people parachute onto a zepellin to rescue a dude. On the XB a zepellin turns into a giant, stompy robot.) It's an XB1 game, but it's available on the XB360s old games service.

Just had my first Black Shark AI genius moment. It was the deployment campaign mission where you have to get to a fairly high altitude enemy base and neutralize the anti air so some Hinds can come in and blow stuff up. I keep my wingman behind me and drop every and anything that can shoot into the sky from like 5km behind a ridge and leave just one soldier with a bazooka Joe that I kinda want to sneak up on and hit with my cannon. I tell my wingman to engage the ground units and what does he do? No, he doesn't use that lovely ridge in front of us at all to engage all the sitting duck ground targets. No, he goes and parks it right in front of that one and only guy with the mannpad and a second later gets shot down. Well I think I am gonna stick to black shark until I finish the campaigns. A-10 is just frickken mind bending at the moment (yo dawg i hear you like hats in your boat so i put a boat hat in your plane so you can wear a hat and fly your plane while you boat hat dawg). This Russian helicopter is too easy to use. It has to be though, I figure you got to be able to fly it drunk on stoli. I don't think a-10 pilots get that luxury. They sure get a lot of hats though.

Though Voodoo Glide mode was a bitch to get working. Still, Biplanes are surprisingly fun and relaxing to fly... at least when you're not worrying about shearing off a wing during high-G turns or German Flak and AA MG fire flying all around you. I do wish the AI was more intelligent. They seem to attack regardless of odds and fight to the death. They're also perfectly willing to attempt to chase 2-seaters that they have no chance of ever catching. Stop chasing after wild gooses Sous Lieutenant La Marque. Doing pretty well too, if I do say so myself. Those Eindeckers are no match for my Nieuport and my flying skill. ![]() I'm so worried about when the Albatrosses are gonna start showing up.

I am reading through the manual for A-10 and keep waiting for a nice explanation to come up that puts it all together, but so far I am still in the dark (haven't really invested much time in figuring it out yet though). Going into more detail, SOI means Sensor Of Interest. Sensor in this context is a general term for the various informational, navigation, and combat systems available to you. These include the HUD, TAD (map), TGP (targeting pod), and Maverick seeker. The SOI is the system that is currently under your direct control via HOTAS commands. SPI means Sensor Point of Interest, and is a point in 3D space (so it's not necessarily on the ground) used as a reference between the various system. At any given time, there exists both a SOI and SPI. The current SOI can be used to change the location of the SPI. Once a SPI is designated, other sensors can be slaved to it. Edit to add (and hopefully make the point of all this clearer): Target designation is generally a matter of directing your SPI onto the target by stepping through some combination of the sensors and refining the SPI as you go. For example, say you get a new tasking via datalink on the TAD. You make the TAD SOI, move the TAD cursor to the tasking icon, and make it the SPI. Then, you slave all to SPI, which points your TGP and HUD symbology at the tasking point. Note that the tasking point may not correlate exactly with the target and you will need to refine it to accurately deliver weapons. You do this by then making the TGP SOI and slewing the TGP directly onto the target. You then make this point (the current aimpoint of the TGP) the new SPI. Now your weapons can be delivered to this point. Hopefully this all makes sense. MagnumHB fucked around with this message at Sep 27, 2011 around 17:16 |

That's actually very clear. I see how the hats and switches become context sensitive based on the SOI. It seems like the most important ones are the DMS, TMS, and China hat for picking and choosing an SPI from the SOI. And you use the coolie hat to select the SOI? So Up is HUD, left long is left MFCD and right long is Right MFCD? Then once you got that to say the TAD on the left MFCD you can slew the cursor around and put it on a target point or a marked bad guy unit and hook it and make it SPI via the TMS? And you can slave other sensors like the targeting pod to it using the china hat. I might be a bit wrong on that but seriously I think you just un-noodled the hardest part of the A-10. For Black Shark, use this to start up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oucXaEZG0vM There are two switches he misses though, one is the "Nav" switch on the right side panel. The other is a covered switch on the right of the ejection seat arming switches (red and white stripped cover), its label is very hard to see but turn this switch on, it is the weapons systems switch that allows for automatic turn to target and moving target buttons to work. The only two things you have to use the keyboard for are (page up) twice to increase throttle, and rCTRL+C to close your cockpit door. As soon as you get off the ground and are kind of lying straight hit the trim button to initiate trim dampening. The easiest way to get good at the Black Shark is first getting good at the trim function. Really, the entire game comes down to understanding every aspect of the autopilot, auto hover, and trim. Once you got that you can put that helicopter anywhere. The weapon systems are way way easy in it. Far easier than any other sim I've played. Hold the trim button down every time you are changing course and then let go once you've settled into that course. This sets the autopilot to basically keep you on exactly that same pitch, bank, and yaw. The next most important thing is practicing slowing your chopper down and getting it in a good hover where you want it to hover. Most importantly, the blue bottons on the lower right panel control your autopilot dampeners and the auto hover function always turns on the altitude control dampener. This keeps you at the same altitude always. If you turn this off while in auto hover you can climb and descend while staying in the same spot, allowing those pop up from the ridge and shoot shots. When you leave auto hover, turn it off or it will make flying impossible. Also, there is a lovely bug in the trim function that makes it so rudder input isn't zeroed between trim adjustments, which means after a bit you'll find yourself flinging around in a horribly uncontrolled circle and if you look down at the cockpit rudder pedals one will be jammed all the way in to the floor. The best way to alleviate this, is after applying rudder with your joystick (or foot pedals), let off on that rudder and just tap the z or x key (which are rudder left and right) and then release the trim button. For whatever reason the bug will zero the rudder input in the trim settings via keyboard, but any zeroing of the rudder by joystick input doesn't much work. It's kind of a habit now for me to use a bunch of rudder, let off on it and quickly hit x. Weapons wise, using the helmet mounted targeting reticle and slaving the weapons viewer to it (Hold o button) is the easiest way to find and lock up a bad guy. The "Automatic turn to target" function is a godsend in auto hover. Any time you want to rocket spam a tree line full of soldiers (which is awesome effective by the way) keep the autopilot dampeners on but hit the blue button for Autopilot director mode, this basically makes it so you can uber control the chopper and turn it anyway you want with the dampeners still on but the autopilot off. This makes charging said tree line while lining up the rocket piper really easy. Spam the rockets, yank to the right, pop a bunch of flares and get behind the nearest hill. Then you can press backspace to reset all your weapons and flying gear and go do it again. Just uhm, after a run, don't yank back on the stick to "gain altitude quickly" like you would in a fighter jet.. I learned that the hard way, apparently two propeller blades can't be in the same place at the same time. You should try it again, there is something really relaxing about flying Black Shark. You kind of mosey around just fast enough, and target hunting is this slow, close to the ground terrain masking affair that is just really great. Night flights are hard as hell, and be that guy and use an office building for cover.

So some of you may remember me asking how to get BS working on a piece of poo poo Pentium 4. While I was able to get it to run, it was far from perfect. Thankfully, I upgraded to a shiny new (to me) Athlon 64 3800 2.4 with an ATI 1950X GT and 3gb of ram. Now I can play BS with low shadows, medium scenes and draw distance, and low textures (might do medium, will check today). Bragging aside, I have three questions to ask. 1) The 1.0.2 patch for BS, I know it updates the graphics engine and does a few things which might add an additional load on my computer. Would you guys recommend it or should I stick with 1.0.1c? I'm currently running that version due to 1.0.2 ruining the training missions, and I'm worried it might slow the game down too much. 2) With the above specs, what are the odds of me successfully playing A-10 with minimal slowdown? Graphic quality is secondary to me playing it properly. 3) I get no menu backgrounds nor can I see the mission briefing text. All other screens work and I usually just read the briefing in the campaign editor screen. Any idea how I might fix this? I looked around the DCS forums but couldn't find much. I've also been goofing around with Falcon BMS, and OMFG did they do an incredible job. Training missions are scripted, they have an awesome A-10 cockpit (and I heard the f-18 was good too), and they even have an old-school Korea campaign with era-specific planes. Anyone else been goofing off with it? Definitely a good time to be simming.

I played various flight sims and I found the A-10 to be pretty easy to learn, once you understand how to properly use the SPI. It's deceptively hard to first understand if you don't have much experience with modern aircrafts, but once you do, you will be able to fly and complete a mission with relative ease. There are more advanced features avaiable to the A10, but they aren't nearly as vital as knowing how to create a SPI and slew your SOI to it. Another nifty and easy to enable feature is transmitting your SPI on the TAD of your wingmates: just set the TAD as your SOI and press DMS Left long and your wingmen will be able to see the "cake" on their TAD. You can also transmit the actual SPI to your wingmen, but that's a bit more advanced and for most pilot having the "cake" on the TAD will be more than enough for them if you found a target and want them to scan there as well.

Now I can play BS with low shadows, medium scenes and draw distance, and low textures (might do medium, will check today). Bragging aside, I have three questions to ask. So while Black Shark runs really smooth on my rig (Core 2 duo the usual stuff) A-10 has a bit of a chug fest with everything turned on. I know that doesn't help much, but I think there is a lot more post processing and stuff for the added "heat waves" and the like effects in A-10. If you knock all those out, especially the added cockpit shadows, I bet you could boil it down to pretty much the same graphics engine. Seriously though, if you haven't played Falcon 4.0 Allied Force, it is far and away an amazing flight sim experience. It doesn't require too much of a rig either. The Korean campaign is unbelievably good. poo poo, its still my favorite one because you get to task the sorties of various aircraft yourself. I would routinely get a bunch of planes in the air to cover me while I'd go and bomb N. Korea's power plants (nothing feels better than putting a bomb down one of those nuclear reactor coolant towers). Blind Rasputin fucked around with this message at Sep 29, 2011 around 19:34 |
