Kilonum posted:There was an addon for X-plane to do it but google threatened to sue and so it disappeared. I still have this on my computer, used it a month or two ago and it worked. It's great for me, as I'm working on my pilot's license, so I can practice around the airport I use in real life, and pick out actual landmarks rather than X-Plane's default "massive forest with 2 roads" that it puts over the small city I'm flying out of. I ran the X-Plane 10 demo, and it looked really nice. I'd like to see what the scenery around my area looks like before I bought it, though.

I have no idea how I managed it, but I have never seen this thread until right now, and holy crap this is where I belong...... I love flight sims! I was reading up on the Virtual Air traffic Control thing, my mind literally melted out of my head. ![]() I realize that these are "older" flight sim games, do you think I will be able to run them and play off of a 1 Year old Lappy? (HP) Edit: I can run Sins of a Solar Empire (for those of you familiar) off of it with maxed Visual. Edit 2: You know what I think I just answered my own Questions. Rise of Flight rolled out an update before Thanksgiving. Harry Tate! ![]() Also, they've finally added all the graphics and sound options into the actual game! So you no longer have to exit out to mess with your graphics settings. You can set different response curves for each plane, and you can also import/export keybindings. I think this update also includes server scripting, so hopefully there will be some cool SEOW-like servers in development soon. According to a recent e-mail they sent out they are working on adding pilot scarves, plane streamers, and personal pilot pistols. Their recent e-mail also kinda hints that they might be hurting financially right now, but I dunno. Anyway, there's also a plane sale going on.

So I'm coming back from a tour in Afghanistan at the start of next month. I'm putting together a new rig as a post-deployment treat for me and it includes the Thrustmaster Warthog. Since seeing A-10s buzz around and make poo poo go boom all the time all I've wanted to do is play DCS A-10. That said, I currently have the Saitek X65f HOTAS. I've only really used it a few times playing DCS A-10. I want to sell that for cheap, anyone interested in picking it up off me? If not, I'll just throw it in SA Mart with the rest of the stuff I'm selling. Ruse fucked around with this message at Nov 26, 2011 around 17:19 |

Thanks for reminding me there was a demo for Xplane 10. I saw it was announced while not at my house so I didn't bother grabbing it. I started trying the torrent and it said it'd get here in 3 weeks, so now I'm grabbing it right from them.

Xplane 10 demo was thoroughly disappointing, and lasted no longer than 30 mins on my HD. The lighting and scenery gen was great, but that was literally it. The textures were horrendous in the cockpits, zoom levels hosed, clouds causing transparency issues, general graphics glitches.. on top of that it ran like absolute loving shite. Oh and barrel rolls in a 747 configured for t/o is just sad.

I was kind of wondering how it would run. 9 doesn't run well on my PC but my computer's getting old and dated at this point. Then I saw those pre-release screenshots for 10 and I couldn't imagine it running at double-digit framerates.

God bless Newegg Black Friday. Got myself an ATI HD4670 1gb so if it isn't lovely I'll be back flying BMS by the weekend. Sorry, just had to brag. The Mighty 8th is cool and all (19 missions and counting) but I miss ramp starting in Korea before taking out a flight Mig-23s before getting smoked by an SA-2. I didn't really get a chance to break it in before my card died. Then it's back to IRC for some Vatsim cock-blocking.

For those of you who play Rise of Flight and want to help out the team after their rather depressing hat in hand call for funding but don't want any more planes, field mods are also on sale for a very cheap price. I bought mods for all my planes for $10.50, not a bad deal.

Mine performed better than that (I'm rocking a 2500K with a 560Ti), you have to calibrate your stick in their menu by picking axes then controls (kind of a pain, but at least it saw all of my sticks immediately), and then recenter your main axes, and I didn't have any problems taking off (hit B to disable breaks, then throttle up to full and pull back towards the end of the runway). However, I have pretty much zero interest in civilian aircraft flight, so it really isn't for me anyway.

I have it. The model and VC are great but it's a performance hog and clumsy to operate. The flight modeling didn't strike me as very accurate either. The jet flew like a loving pig which is not at all how Boeing jets are -- a very striking 'on rails' feeling. I haven't flown it since the patch came out though. If you're really wanting a 767 the Level D one is terrific but has its flaws as well.

So I had been tinkering around with FreeTrack head tracking. It took a bit of work, but I finally managed to get it working well. I definately learned some things doing it, some not exactly spelled out on various info sources. I think head tracking falls in one of those odd categories of something you can't really understand until you've tried it. And being the cheap bastard I am I wanted to see if I could put together a tracking system using just junk I had laying around already. I had a Logitech c270 webcam laying around already. They go for about $40 new, decent little piece of hardware. I wasn't sure if it had a removable IR filter, but it seems to not have one at all anyway. Honestly the trickiest thing in the whole build was understanding what people meant by using a piece of old developed film negative to block the lens of visible light. I dicked around for 2 days trying various bits of film until I figured out it meant "Piece of film negative that's absolutely pitch-rear end black". I have basic experience with electronics and soldering so building a dorky IR hat wasn't difficult. I went with a USB powered version mainly because I didn't have a battery holder but did have several old USB cables. 3 IR LEDs came off an old broken IR-lit security camera. Another trick that made a world of difference was diffusing the LEDs. Most FAQs reccomend filing down the curved front of the LEDs. I tried this with a spare, tested it out in front of the camera and it didn't seem to work too well. Other FAQs reccomended using modelling putty to make a ball-shaped diffuser to stick on the LEDs, but I didn't have any of that. What I did have was a pile of hot glue sticks for a glue gun. I cut about half inch pieces off, drilled through the flat side and stuck those on the LEDs. It works fantastic. I think the big limiting factor with going with something like FreeTrack is the lack of support behind it. Especially if you've never used a TrackIR system and don't really understand the various settings and tweaks. Trying to find people's settings to just load up is difficult with FreeTrack, so you resort to just fumbling with the settings. FaceTrackNoIR is a piece of dogshit by the way. That thing absolutely refused to work properly. All kinds of glitchy, tracking randomly stopping, and causing DCS A-10 to have odd problems.

I picked up copies of DCS Black Shark and A10 Warhog during the Steam Thanksgiving sale, and I'm having some trouble setting them up with my Saitek X-52. I want to assign the zoom function to the cheap little slider on the throttle, but the input jitters a bit. As you can imagine, this effectively simulates the experience of flying a fighter jet with Parkinson's. Is there a way either in game or through the Saitek software to set the joystick to ignore those constant, minor jitters? I tried the dead zone options, but the best I can do is create deadzones at the top, bottom, and middle of the slider's range. It works in that I can use it to define a middle area where the level of zoom is stable, but beyond that it still jitters.
|
| # ? Dec 4, 2011 23:16 |

IIRC the best way is to set ranges. so 0-20% is output as X, 21-40 is Y, 41-60 is Z. if the game allows it this would work, or increase zoom above 70% and decrease below 30%. Ranges outputting keys that you set in game are your friend on that POS. I haven't done this since IL2, so I don't remember exactly how to do it, but I remember the programmer made it pretty easy.

i was in the exact same situation and did not get it to work. I'l see if your advice can fix it after work. Looks promising. MacGyvers_Mullet, I'v been using the "mouse" nub below the slider for zooming for years and it works pretty well. forward to zooming in and backwards for zooming out. use a huge deadzone so it only zooms when you want it.
