I've got some questions which came to my while practicing with the FSX demo (my copy should arrive any day now) and reading the old thread and FAA handbook:

- How can I track my flight and export it to Google Earth afterwards?
- Which software should I use for flight planning and why?
- Where do I get airport maps so that I can taxi without the progressive taxi function?
- When flying holding patterns over an airport (like Kilonium in the old thread) I read that this should be done at about 1000ft above ground or higher, but how far do I fly away from the airport before turning onto the base leg for final approach?

I use Flight Sim Commander for flight planning, I know other goons do too. Along with http://skyvector.com/ for nice internet charts. As for exporting to Google Earth I am sure there are plugins for FSX that will do it.

The best resource for any questions is IRC.

Most modern video cards will not help FSX all that much, what really helps is per core clock speed. Almost nothing is offloaded to the GPU with FSX and by default FSX is a single core process. You can offload some threads to other cores with third party plug ins, most of us use the one that comes with FSInn/FSCopilot.

AI Traffic does not work in any MS multiplayer, including shared cockpit. The irc channel tends to have a flight a few times a week. It is a great way to learn all the lingo, we even do shared cockpit flights for vatsim newbies.

Will the ridiculously ugly Saitek PS38 Cyborg be good enough? Is it at least superior to/on par with the Aviator or the cheaper Logitech Extreme Pro? I love that it has two throttles, at least.

The logitech is good (for the price) if you only use it for a joystick, the throttle sucks on it.

I'm an on and off again flight sim nerd. In real life I almost have my commercial ticket, but long story short don't have the funds or means for funds to continue.

However, I've collected bits for about 8 years now and will soon build my home sim-pit I've dreamed of since a kid. When about 12 yrs old I had a Nintendo and the Afterburner game. I lived at my Grandparent's who frequently left town for the season. I stole (borrowed) a little TV out of their room, placed a chair in front of it, then plopped cardboard and blankets all around to enclose it all as my (simulator).

I thought it was awesome.

Well, now I'm about to have a Intel i7 950 with a premium motherboard and 12gb or ram, a SSD harddrive, an ati 5870 2gb gpu, a triplehead2go with 3 19" LCDs and 1 23" LCD, Saitek yoke, rudder, and switch panel, and a whole bunch of GoFlight modules for full autopilot, com, nav, gps and about 30 switches to finally run FSX mouse and keyboard free.

I've scrounged for years and have bought everything at half price if not better. Now I'm just waiting time to build it. I'll do my best for pictures.

Looking forward to finally joining VATSIM, too. I haven't flow in real life for a year and a half and haven't flow IFR since my checkride in '08, so I'm anxious to catch up again.

You sir should come to IRC if you are not in it yet. Flying with goons on vatsim is a really good time. #flightsim irc.synirc.net

Is FS X multiplayer? Like, if you were flying a citation or a Gulfstream, could I walk around in the back of it? I've got this great idea for a goon virtual sloshflight. Basically, we'd all get together on a vent/TS/Mumble/whatever, with large quantities of alcohol, and all play the same flight sim (preferably all in the same plane if we can swing it) and some goons are the designated driver for each leg. They'll then actually fly each leg with full ATC and poo poo, while everyone else "gets drunk in the back." Keep the legs short and switch pilots up each one.

I don't know how it would be technically feasible to do but it sounds hilarious and if anyone can think of a way to make it happen I"m totally in.

You wont see other goons, and we do this every night just in our own planes. Alcohol is essential to the perfect goon vatsim experience.

I must admit, I did bring up the in game map once. In the middle of Georgian bay I decided to see if I could triangulate my position using the Midland and Wiarton VORs. After I did my thing I pulled up my map and figured I was within 500m of where I thought I was.

Then I went and made myself the most sandwich ever and landed.

This must be what it feels like to be a sperg.

For you guys who fly with FSX; what add ons do you see as absolutely vital? I'm just utterly confused as to how GEX, REX, FEX, ASE, and X Graphics all work with each other and what over lap is there.

All I want is good-looking and real weather along with improved airfield textures (runway, taxi ways) and night lighting. VFR flying is usually what I do. What do you guys suggest?

ASE is good for weather, but some payware aicraft are a bit crazy with it. Honestly, all the mentioned addons are great for VFR but not really mandatory. I would go with a nice payware GA aircraft before anything else. The default planes suck hard. A lot of goons fly the SF260 from Realair, it is a nice single engine fast (160 cruse) easy to fly aircraft with a really pretty VC. http://www.realairsimulations.com/f...e=sf26007_intro
