Sore necks will certainly happen, but not because it is a bad product. It's because your neck is more than likely out of shape. If you think about it, most adults specifically go out of their way to not use their neck muscles as much as possible.

Get a Saitek x52 for the throttle (since you apparently don't like the stick) and then use the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro for your stick. I'm pretty sure someone else in this thread has that combo and loves it. I personally think the x52 and x52 pro are great... if you can find one that works I think the perfect stick would really be a G940 without the force feedback nonsense. The stick and the throttle felt fantastic and were really well made, but I just could not get around how blah the force feedback felt (and hearing about the overheating issues makes me happy I took it back when I did).

Keep your airspeed below the maximum limits of the rotors. I can't remember off the top of my head what those are, but you can reach them pretty fast in just about all of the copters. I think the manuals list them somewhere.

I believe I read somewhere that the Steam version is only going to patch up to 4.09m. I'm downloading it off of Steam myself since the only "clean" directory I have of IL2 is 4.08. I'll report back and let you know for sure. Edit: Goddammit. I forgot to alt-tab out of the single player steam game I was playing and it paused the download, and now I can't get it above 300kb/s, so it'll be another hour. I'll likely be in bed by that time. yuPlay says unlimited online activations, which isn't so bad... but it isn't all that clear about if you have to stay online. Minimum specs requires the net connection, but does that mean just to activate the once, or does it call home constantly during single player? Also, apparently you can change the language in the setup... so why was the Russian version required for you, Jefferoo?

The only thing I didn't like about the Extreme 3D Pro was the smallish throw and the fairly tight movement... but those are both very subjective complaints. It's a solid stick and a steal at the current price tag. And if you really like the action on the stick but you want to upgrade to a full HOTAS, you can pick up a Saitek x52 or x52pro and just use the throttle half (I believe a number of folks in these sim threads do exactly this and love it).

Yeah, the x52 and x52 pro are the loosest sticks available, I believe... although I've never tried anything from Thrustmaster in the last 7 or so years, so I'm not sure. I have an x52pro and I think it feels perfect... and it isn't bolted to anything. I don't remember the x52 being any stronger than that, so I'm not sure why you'd need to bolt it down either. Hrm.

Well, I understand that... I'm just not sure why it was sliding around. Did your stick not come with rubber stumps on the bottom? Or is your desk covered in Vaseline? I had two x52's prior to my current pro and none of them had any problems staying still using just the rubber stumps on a smooth glass or, now, a wooden surface. I guess I just got lucky. Obviously the sticks come with holes specifically for folks to mount it on something; I just figured it was to mount it in your virtual cockpit rather than to just make sure it didn't fall over while on a regular desk.

A high resolution facing a single direction is nothing compared to being able to look around without having to snap to a bunch of different camera views with a POV Hat switch, no matter how big the screen is. If he's ever played with head tracking, he'll need it no matter what.

I, too, took the G940 back. FFB just isn't good enough in enough flight sims to warrant the pricetag. Granted, I never got to use a fancy FFB addon for FSX, but that sim isn't my bag anyway. Would be nice to try the G940 again in Cliffs of Dover, but I think that ship has sailed.

Most of the usefulness of a Joystick is that it leaves your other hand free to grapple a throttle controller with a whole slew of other buttons/functionality on it. I would imagine tying both hands to a yoke that has only so many buttons on each side would severely limit the number of things you could do quickly and easily. I don't think I'd ever want to play a combat sim on a yoke.

Daimo posted:However I'm not sure whether this counts as a yoke or joystick: I think that is technically a stick. I would say that a "stick" is something where both X and Y axes are on the same joint, where a yoke has X and Y on two separate joints. I'm just throwing that out there as a way to define them. Normally I would just say that is a stick because you can hold it with one hand and be okay.

I'm definately going to reinstall RoF (even though I feel a bit ripped off since what is now free is something I essentially paid money for*). I haven't tried it since I got the new rig, and while it played rather well on my previous system, it'll probably be insane/awesome on my new one. *Technically got it for free with TrackIR 5.0 in a combo deal that costs as much as a TrackIR 5 does by itself direct from NaturalPoint. Still sucks though! I have a DVD and everything!

"Exaggerate" is not quite the correct word to describe how head tracking in flight sims work. "Scales" is more accurate. The software (at least TrackIR and Freetrack; they are the only ones I have any experience with) allows you to set up graphs that show a specific curve of the scaling that goes on in each axis. And TrackIR (possibly Freetrack) allows you to set up curves for different profiles, and then those profiles can be assigned to specific game executables. And the defaults are playable if you are really good at keeping your head still (or the game has a way to lock you into gunsight view), but I prefer graphs that have a bit of a deadzone in the middle of all of the axis setups. This means that minute movements around "looking straight at your monitor" don't have any affect on the camera view in game, but as you turn away from center it ramps up. You just have to make sure you can get to the extents of a particular axis and still be facing the camera so it can see you AND so that you can still see the monitor.

I've watched all of these videos over the weekend off and on, and they helped... a little. I got way better against bots today after "zeroing my sights" with the F10 button to save my head center. Not having to actually move my head in an awkward position when firing helps a ton. Next I'm going to start practicing snap rolls because his video on that made that little skill look stupid useful. I really need to find a good resourse for comparing the different aircraft to know what the best way to fight in any given matchup. Edit: Google to the rescue... looks like this is exactly what I was looking for: http://www.virtual-air.nl/ Edit2: Meh... it's just parroting the stats listed here which doesn't spell it out for me what their strengths and weaknesses are in different matchups. Wolfy posted:What's wrong with GFWL? It's not exactly the coolest thing in the universe but it's not exactly something that would make me not want to play a game I was really looking forward to. It is kind of annoying, but it's no ubisoft copy protection scheme. It is slow, clunky, annoying, ties up your HOME button (or some keyboard combination including HOME, which is what I bind to one of my mouse buttons), and is essentially not needed for anything I want to do while gaming. I don't care about achievements, I don't want to have yet another friends list, and I don't have Xbox Live Gold (nor do I even play my Xbox anymore) so tying it to the same account is useless. Instead of consolidating things for a bunch of games that I might want to play, it instead adds yet one more thing that is trying to consolidate games I might want to play. What's worse is when it is on a Steam title and I have to not only log into Steam, but also log into GFWL after the fact... and in some cases, they don't patch in the same way, causing errors, and sometimes, save game loss. I'm sure if I really thought about it, I could come up with more, but I think that is enough issues that I have with it to warrant me having the rule and still having plenty of entertainment software to... you know, entertain me.

As stated in the Steam thread, do not buy anything during the sale unless it is a "Daily Deal". Granted, these are sims so likely won't get any front page time so 33% is as much as you'll probably get, but as far as I know, they will be on sale until the last day of the sale, so if you can wait a few days, you MIGHT get a few more bucks off. I haven't picked up Warthog since I have a ton of other poo poo to play right now, but if it drops to 50% off, I'll snatch it up immediately.

It isn't like they fall out of center when you are not applying pressure or anything. But if you really like a stiff stick, the x52s are not for you.

But when I got the pro (I went through 3 regular x52s with manufacturing flaws and just bought a pro out of frustration) I realized that the only way to make use of it was to actually program it. With actual code. Or find someone who has already made a plug in for your favorite sim title that will work on it. In other words, the pro is not worth the extra cash, whether it works on a mac or not. If you like the feel of the stick (a bit loose) and like a lot of buttons and the possible expense of spikey control axes, get a Saitek x52 (not the pro). They are going well under $100 now.
