Kilonum posted:There was an addon for X-plane to do it but google threatened to sue and so it disappeared. I still have this on my computer, used it a month or two ago and it worked. It's great for me, as I'm working on my pilot's license, so I can practice around the airport I use in real life, and pick out actual landmarks rather than X-Plane's default "massive forest with 2 roads" that it puts over the small city I'm flying out of. I ran the X-Plane 10 demo, and it looked really nice. I'd like to see what the scenery around my area looks like before I bought it, though.

manic mike posted:In a lot of ways the military trainer sims I've used are more difficult to fly than the actual aircraft I just did a few hours in a simulator for part of the instrument hours for my PPL. That sim is way harder to fly than an actual plane. It's almost impossible to trim out right and you have no feel for the aircraft.

drat, I was hoping to join in on that VATSIM newbie night but unexpectedly there was good weather here so I went out for an actual flight (PPL flight test next week), so I didn't have a chance to get VATSIM all configured. I'll try to see if I can get it going now, hopefully I can join in late or I'll just be ready for the next one.

HeyEng posted:Is there an app for android/IOS (ipod touch specifically) that will spit out an ADI, HSI, or airspeed/alt to the device? Air Navigation Pro apparently has plugins for X-Plane and FSX. I've only used the free version which doesn't connect to the sims, but it has an HSI, VOR, and ADF that I've played around with in real life. If you have a compatible webcam/PS3 camera/Wiimote around, it wouldn't hurt to try out Freetrack with your TrackIR clip. It may take a bit of tweaking with the settings, but mine works alright with a wiimote and homemade IR LED clip.

Yeah, why would you expect anything for after warranty support? Whenever I've had it issues with items out of warranty, I always contact the company and hope for the best, but if I get anything out of them I treat it as a bonus, and they've probably bought my loyalty.

Is it really a good idea to drop somebody who has no idea about navigation into VOR work? That stuff isn't exactly simple if you don't have a base of knowledge to work with. Maybe try some simple dead reckoning stuff first? Pick a departure airport and a destination. Keep it simple and short at first. Figure out the magnetic heading and distance you have to fly to get there. If you know what your approximate groundspeed will be then you can use the distance to estimate the time it will take to get there. Take off, take up your heading, and start a timer. When you reach the time you estimated, are you at/able to see your destination? If not, check your in game map and see where you went wrong. Try to avoid looking at the in-game map otherwise, as it can be a bit of a crutch. After a simple one try some multi leg trips around mountains or something. On Skyvector.com you can plan out a route and it will give you the headings and distances. I don't know, VORs just seem a bit tricky for somebody who has no navigational knowledge already. I guess I'm coming from a different mindset as I learned all of this flying a real plane. sellouts posted:Note if the triangle (or half circle) is pointing up or down, that means you are flying to the vor (up) or away from it (down) Fly towards the vertical line on that gauge and when it centers up you're on that course to/from the VOR! Also, this isn't totally correct (or just worded wrong). The To/From flag tells you where you are in relation to the radial you have dialed in, not whether you are flying to the station or not. You can be flying away from the station and still have a TO indication, and vice versa. For anyone interested in learning about VORs, Tim's Air Navigation Simulator Is a cool Java applet that you can play around with VORs with, it's helpful to just drag the plane around and see what the indications are.

Yeah, I guess so, it just seemed to me that he was just interested in hopping from one airport to another in a 172, rather than flying airways in a 37. For now, at least. What do I know about flight simming though. I use xplane as a study aid mostly, and the only time I've gone on VATSIM I accidentally spawned myself on the active runway and didn't realize it until I saw a plane do an overshoot right above me and got a bunch of messages to contact tower.

I have to share this just because I think it's so drat cool:![]() X-Plane 10 outputting GPS data to my Nexus 7 running Naviator, using X-Plane to GPS to fake the GPS signal to Android. The cherry on top is using the Canadian chart that I had to photograph, geo-reference myself and convert to use in Naviator. Technology is cool as hell sometimes, I can't wait to try it out in a real plane. Lemons fucked around with this message at Nov 21, 2012 around 21:49 |
