Time Cowboy posted:There are some strange landforms in Central Asia that I can't quite figure out. You can see them even at a pretty low zoom, they're that big: Came here to post something in the exact same area. http://goo.gl/maps/FXVb That double field line thing stretches away on either side for loving miles. When there's an obstruction like a river or something it stops nice and neat and then continues on the other side. It makes twists and turns, you lose track of it from time to time but it always reappears somewhere else along a bit. Came across that years ago on NASA WorldWind back before Google Earth was big and it's puzzled me since.

The high resolution imagery is mostly aerial photography. Here's something I came across many years ago back in the NASA World Wind days http://goo.gl/maps/fQt7l That weird rear end line of trees or whatever in Russia that goes on for miles and miles, only breaking up for rivers and small towns. Sometimes it appears to end but then appears a few miles after some big river systems. And another line thing to the north of it http://goo.gl/maps/EBs4V While searching online I came across some more lines further away http://goo.gl/maps/H9Rjd Pipelines or windbreaks or something? Oh here's some more around Volgograd http://goo.gl/maps/m0R56 former Stalingrad. Some people have suggested fortification lines but that seems unlikely.

Here's a big rear end queue on the Iraq-Syrian border, it goes for miles into Syria. http://goo.gl/maps/np1GR Google Earth says the imagery date is from 2005. e; fixed link cool new Metroid game fucked around with this message at 18:28 on Sep 2, 2013 |

Hah, that totally slipped my mind. It's been ages since I hosed up linking to map locations like that. Fixed link: https://maps.google.com/maps?q=33.835881,38.576474&ll=33.433957,38.907384&spn=0.007655,0.016512&num=1&t=h&z=17

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruwayshid_Air_Base Ruwayshid Air Base is a former Iraqi Air Force base in the Al-Anbar Governorate of Iraq. It was captured by Coalition forces during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. Forward dispersal airfield, they would've moved up aircraft from further back in time of war or whatever. cool new Metroid game fucked around with this message at 21:38 on Sep 2, 2013 |

That weird line goes all the way down if you mess around with zoom levels, at least in Google Earth. And it's smack on the 180º meridian. Also the line messes up the 3d elevation poo poo in some places on Earth. So I guess it's just some fuckup at Google with stretching the images across the antimeridian. http://goo.gl/maps/fVzQc http://goo.gl/maps/n7i1x Here's it continuing south of the Equator. http://goo.gl/maps/DEUMO And at the other end of the world.

Michael Scott posted:Anyone else find some imagery that is obviously censored by governments? That stuff is fun. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satellite_map_images_with_missing_or_unclear_data The Dutch government seem pretty paranoid. A lot of the places listed have this weird huge-pixellated blob over the censored parts, looks like some funky camo. I remember seeing this one earlier in the year http://goo.gl/maps/jfgce pretty funny how you can just zoom into street view and look at the boring residential and light commercial buildings that the Dutch don't want you looking at from above. e; this one's weird http://goo.gl/maps/JIh20 Something on the western side of NATO Air Base Geilenkirchen that they don't want you to see. cool new Metroid game fucked around with this message at 06:08 on Sep 22, 2013 |

Google pulled a ton of the street view along roads in Germany because of legal arguments with the government, it used to be a hell of a lot more covered.

yeah most the poo poo they use is aerial photography, planes can have cameras mounted on to point directly down as well.

that reminded me when the local newspaper ran a story about some idiot seeing a ghost on google maps. I googled it and the daily mail also ran the story lol http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2278635/Image-ghostly-man-spotted-Google-Earth-remains-village.html it's the shadow of some radar mast or something that you can easily look at in the loving street view.
