They announced back in October that they're looking to cast an unknown as Snake in the upcoming Metal Gear Solid movie. That was gonna be my first question, the sound is really dull, and there was a lot of blown focus (mostly on your Ray Wise character - if DSLRs excel at anything it's at having an absurdly shallow focal depth), which drove me nuts. It bugged me that the diner's ceiling fan was on because it reflected in her shoulder jewels, and so pointedly not showing the handcuffs made it seem like you had something to hide, and I was actually surprised when you did show them because I'd assumed that, for one reason or another, you couldn't afford a pair. Also, those are some intensely long credits and the shorter your short is, the better. Ray Wise Jr there was fun to watch and I enjoyed his eyeballs but your leading lady was pretty Acting 101. The script mostly excelled at being interesting and keeps a good pace for fifteen minutes but it veers really close to being a generic deal with the devil script, though I really liked the way the waitress was worked in and the devil (or his subsidiary) got a lot of good lines - "Eternal suffering is reserved for those who refuse to take a side". You could totally drop the thing with the black eyes, though, which is completely unnecessary. The major positive is that you got me to glide through fifteen minutes of short film without itching to leave.

Good news is my sound guy said he wants to rework it. Hopefully we can mitigate that problem before festival entries and Kickstarter DVD's are shipped. I'm really, really glad that the writing worked for you and that it kept you interested! The credits were a courtesy to the investors but I completely get that they're too long. It makes me really happy to hear that this film is keeping people's interests. And that's the second time I've heard people liking that particular line. I'm having an, "Oh my god I pitched dialogue!" moment. Thanks for watching.

Was there any lav audio or was it boom only? Honestly it sounded like on camera mics to be honest. You HAVE to have some lav audio in there next go around (for dialogue).

Thanks. I thought films usually just used boom mics, unless you were doing long shots where the booms would be visible. Are lavs commonly used in (short)film?

Yeah lav mics are going to get you much cleaner and stronger dialogue recording. Typically on any film, short or not, you'll have a lav mic plus boom. The boom is good for recording certain dialogue situations and nat sound (environmental/atmospheric sound) as well as other sounds that happen during the scene (glass falling, footsteps, etc). If all you have is a boom then you'll want a good mixer to properly balance your levels. You'll also want a real proper sound guy. And if you don't know him personally, then double check his work throughout the day. Goddamn I found that out the hard way and am having to schedule an ADR session which I'm having to pay a sound guy I know to come run. Ugh. You'll notice in Fiction D's film that the dialogue audio, while not terrible, feels a little distant/echo-y/muddled. It should feel like a strong confident layer that's presented near the forefront of your mix (obviously there are exceptions to the rule for specific circumstances - for example the dialogue in the club scenes in The Social Network).

You'll especially note it at the beginning. At first I was going for a reservoir dog style feel. Remember that part where they track the camera back and the audio gets more echoey? Initially I was going for that distant sound and then something crisper when it got closer. It didn't turn out exactly like I hoped. My boom guy was itching to make a few changes after he saw this cut and he's going to work with it over the next few weeks to see if he can improve upon it.

I just won a short film completion. But only because the dudes behind didn't do a very good job at actually promoting it and there were only two submissions. I will only get a portion of the prices but at least the deadline kept me motivated enough to actually finish my short. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBV3_3y9R_M It's a pretty simple horror short with no dialogue and is very loosely based on some of the ideas from Lovecraft's commonplace book. Although there is a ton of things I'd do differently if I were to re-do it I think the film turned out well considering that I started shooting the same day that I bought the camera. Some of the shots even turned out alright. I'm probably going to start cranking out as many shorts as I can in the next months and hopefully sharpen my skills a bit.

The alternative was to have nothing as it only happens in her phone and wouldn't make any noise, so the cymbal noise was just added to try and add a bit of a startling effect. But you may be right, it may be a bit cheap/too much.

This isn't my creative project, but my buddies are film majors and have used their school equipment to make a pilot for this web series. They're graduating now, but have a pretty talented crew and would like to finish this series as well as get their production team started. It's 2 parts. Definitely watch the 2'nd part; I think that's where it really gets rolling. And it's their first film project. They've learned a lot and are super confident that the rest of their series will be something that viewers will love. Some of the writer/director's biggest influences are breaking bad and the Coen Brothers. He's very conscious of the things that did and didn't work in the final product. They've got an indiegogo going, but I won't be a nuisance and only post the link in the project solicitation forum

I think this was an idea that needed a little more time to develop. It's charming and all but the characters are thin only by the mere fact that you had little to no time to develop them into anything meaningful. Technically it's pretty nice, the acting is a bit forced but it works with the writing, and I wanted to watch it. I just didn't personally like the ending.
