What you don't realize is that, in order to accomodate the years-long coloring cycle, comic books run on about a decade of backlog. Comics you read now were originally written and penciled around 2001. Topical references are left blank, akin to mad libs, so that they can be filled in just before going to print. Of course, sometimes this results in issues where the nouns are all "fart" and current politicians are all named "Penis McSlapcock", but that's the price the industry pays.

I'm about to fly up to Alaska and work in a cannery out in the middle of nowhere. I'll be cutting up fish for sixteen hours a day, seven days a week, for five weeks (assuming the season is good). [Not sure if anybody remembers but I originally talked about getting hired there--despite the misgivings of many goons--in another E/N thread and was planning on bumping that one. Unfortunately it got archived.]

I figure I'll have plenty of time to think as I won't need to devote much brainpower to whatever task I'm doing so I'm looking for interesting things to think about--philosophical concepts, cool daydream scenarios, mysteries of the universe, routes to self-betterment, etc.

I'm also looking for motivation to get through the season. I'll hopefully make a decent chunk of money so I'm making a list of things I'll buy once I'm done to motivate me to push through. So far I've got a fleshlight, maybe a nice vaporizer, and the Game of Thrones 1st season dvd, which leaves me with a lot of leftover money. So I'm willing to take suggestions on what to buy too.

But the primary focus of this thread is to enlist goons' help in coming up with good thinking topics. And if people are interested, I might be able to post updates on my cannery experience once I start working there (depending on what the internet situation there is).

Ambiguatron posted:

I said this in the troper thread a few times, but it bears repeating. There's two things you need to understand about TVTropes, their approaches to fiction as readers and as writers.

As readers, they've created this weird school of anti-analysis that cribs from death of the author, auteur theory, and Robert Heinlein's pantheistic solipsism, although I doubt any of them have any idea what those things are. What it comes down to is that they treat all fiction as some sort of historical record of a parallel universe. You can't criticize a work or its author for the inclusion of surprise sex or pedophilia because that's how it happens in the work, any more than you can attack historians for writing about the surprise sex of Nanking or the Holocaust; to Tropers, these fictional events have the same level of validity. They have killed the author, not in the sense of letting the work standing by itself but in the sense of acknowledging the work as fictional at all. They refuse the assumption that the whole thing is made up and every word is a deliberate choice by the author.

Now, trying to psychoanalyze an author through his work is enormously flawed, and as a practice it's extremely selective- people who write conceptually similar things are often arbitrarily labeled as supporting or being aroused by the material they've written whereas others are somewhat arbitrary placed in a literary of canon of some kind and given a pass on weird poo poo they've put in their stories. Yet, when you are writing or drawing or producing pornography that is explicitly porn and is right on the bleeding edge of the Miller Test, if not on the other side, and you're involving animals and children and other weird poo poo, it is appropriate to question the author and analyze their motivations. Tropers refuse that; if Character A rapes Character B, that's because that's what happened, not because the author chose to write it that way.

On the other hand, they effectively embrace the auteur theory. Virtually every page has a Word of God tab, or makes references to the Word of God trope. The author is the absolute authority of the meaning of their work, what takes place off screen, character motivations that aren't revealed. It is a sin to think about the meaning of the work if what the author has to say about it contradicts your theory. If you presume to try to do any kind of substantive analysis you'll be forced to put it on a page that no one reads or stick it in a "Wild Mass Guessing" tab where it will be drowned in an endless sea of jokes that amount to memes like "Character X is a Time Lord and Item Y is his Tardis" and "The Plot of Work Z takes place during the Instrumentality sequence of Neon Genesis Evangelion". These "theories" are repeated on every loving page.

The only way to reconcile these disparate outlooks -the author as totally unrelated to the work, and yet as a "god"-like authority on it- is to frame works of fiction as historical treatises. The author is no more responsible for the content of the work than a historian is for historical events, and yet speaks with the same authority as a historian or chronicler who actually observed the events in question. In effect, the theory of TVTropes is that authors do not create, the observe something that exists out in the aether and transmit it to we plebians who simply receive the transmitted revelation.

The writing theory of TVTropes is simpler- there isn't one. They think the entirety of the human imagination can be broken down into a set of variables, and if they plug them into a formula, entertainment pops out. The underlying current amongst the TVTropes community of writers is hatred of the written word. They don't take an interest in writing because they enjoy language or the craft of tapping into the human imagination with words, they do it because they don't have the skills, technical, social, or otherwise, to break into another artistic medium. Besides being riddled with cliches, their works all read like scripts from films or video games or comic books translated into flat, uninteresting prose. That is in fact the entire point- they want to produce visual media, but they can't, and so commit in my mind their greatest crime, the mutilation and debasement of the written word as a poor alternative to visual media.

Their works, in turn, are universally terrible because none of them read, or read anything of any complexity or quality. They consume purely visual media in a very narrow range of genres and do nothing but parrot and imitate what they see. TVTropes is a blank void that goes on forever, the cold death of imagination.

Also they have lots of people that want to gently caress little girls and that's pretty uncool, too, but I blame that on the moderation staff. There's something about the Internet that draws people like that out of the woordwork and any form of social communication must make a deliberate effort to chase them off.
Not funny, just very well explained and reasoned.
