Loved that vintage Arrows vid - great find! The last flying Vulcan is actually based at the airport I live next door to, It's awesome to see when it leaves for displays elsewhere and the like. Last Saturday on it's return the pilot held the nose-wheel up almost the whole length of the runway on landing, a real spectacle. I later found out the guy actually flew in the Black Buck raids of the Falklands conflict and received a DFC. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Black_Buck

At any time during the 80s I would've been deader than dead in a nuclear exchange unless we were visiting my grandparents in Grass Valley. Oh, wait, they lived pretty close to Beale. Me too but in the UK. Grew up (and still live) right next to RAF Finningley in Yorkshire. It's now a commercial airport but as a kid (and having watched Threads) we all knew we probably wouldn't even hear the bang when the Russkies pushed the button. Didn't help when I watched a documentary in the 80s about an exercise and the guys had a map of the UK on the wall and were saying something like 'let's assume 15-20 warheads targeted at Finningley'. On the plus side (I think), it turned me into the aviation/military nerd I am today!

I visited Newark Air Museum in Lincolnshire the other day, there are a few examples of Cold War aviation there so I thought I'd share some photos. I only have a bridge camera and I am a poo poo photographer so apologies in advance! As you can see the museum is more of the 'aircraft roped off in a field' variety, not the 'immaculately restored jets hanging from the roof of a purpose built facility' type! You can follow the Vulcan on twitter: https://twitter.com/!/XH558 They're trying to test but it's pissing down with rain/hail here at the moment. One of the reasons I get so interested is I live right next to the runway directly opposite the hangar they keep the Vulcan in.

Yep, I was 12, lived 30 miles from Sheffield, the city it was set in, and less than a mile from RAF Finningley, which was mentioned as one of the targets in the film. My dad had just retired from the RAF - he'd been stationed at Finningley. Most kids my age were already paranoid about imminent nuclear destruction at the hands of the USSR, the film didn't help!

They might be saying that to try and avoid massive crowds though as the local plod are threatening to stop them flying if the roads around EGCN start getting too congested.
