contemporary composers can be so gimmicky with their scoring, yeah. pain in the rear end if you ask me (even though some of it is really good)

Here's an Ives composition that requires two keyboards, one tuned up or down a quarter tone lol. I cannot imagine more of a pain in the rear end for a piano tech.

It actually sounds great. Kind of reminds me of VHS audio warping on rented tapes.

also he's not the most fashionable guy to like but anyone else like Strauss? I never liked his tone poems but I got hooked on his operas recently and the orchestration in Frau Ohne Schatten is just astonishing

I've never heard of Richard Strauss haters. He wrote some badass double bass lines that show up on excerpt lists frequently.

I am very very fond of this piece but I've met a few professional musicians who dislike it for being too corny, and consider it their least favorite thing to play.

gently caress the haters, I say. Give me "IV. Festival at Baghdad. The Sea. The Ship Breaks against a Cliff Surmounted by a Bronze Horseman" any day

While we're on programmatic music, "IV. Marche au supplice (March to the scaffold)"

If I were to undertake such a neurotic project, I would at least have some self-respect and listen in backwards order.

Mahler rules and his symphonies don't need ranking, but I like 1 the best and I'm surprised you put 5 so low!

There are two full docs on Mahler by Michael Tilson Thomas that are very much worth watching. They have concerts after the doc which are recorded really nicely.

Songs of a Wayfarer, No.5 Adagietto, No. 7 Scherzo, No. 9 Rondo Burlesque

Also Urlicht from No. 2 is just perfect

What’s Opera, Doc? and I’m actually pretty serious if you haven’t seen it.

Most tablet users in my orchestra use foot pedals and forscore. I prefer paper and pencil myself

I got to see the San Francisco Symphony perform Ein Heldenleben last week. Is maximalism still in style? If so it's the perfect piece to go along with it.

Hilary Hahn got sick at, but they got a good pianist at the last minute to play Beethoven Piano Concerto no. 3. Tough shoes to fill but the audience was kind to him

The program opened with a tone poem by William Grant Still, who I'd never heard of but it was beautiful and I'm going down a rabbit hole of his music today.

Had a great time playing Saint Saens 3rd Symphony last night. The composition is flawless and the bass part was challenging in a good way. Unfortunately our organist kind of blew his big moment by tapping the keys a few beats early for the famous C Major chord

A lot of community orchestras are eager to play world premier compositions and will even pay a modest commission. Not exactly prestigious or high-paying, but it’s something.

Also when I was in youth orchestra, we played a fair number of world premiers. Young and or local composers, mostly. Not sure if we paid them
