My PSP-3000's randomly shutting down when on battery power; no fixed point at which it shuts down, either in terms of remaining charge or uptime. I've replaced the battery with a new official extended battery, still getting the problem. Am I basically screwed?

Okay imagine you're playing something like say Monster Hunter, you're running around and hunting all those monsters and laying traps and stuff.

That would depend on the functionality, and mostly whether they try to cram the trackpad full of laptop-style scroll bars on the edges. You could be playing something like Monster Hunter and then track your fingers along the pad to move the camera, except oh no you tracked too low and turned on autoscroll instead and oh god it won't stop rotating the camera where's the monster hey that's my leg arcing off into the distance with a bloody trail.

I swear at my laptop a lot for this stuff.

ok, doesn't sound quite like my cup of tea. As a somewhat related question, how are the front mission games? not as good, comparable or completely different (I know they're on different platforms)

I agree with the point above me, but I'd add: Front Mission 3 has always seemed like pure fun. The general tone of the game foregos realism or gritty difficulty in favour of stomping around, blowing the poo poo out of things, hacking the internet, and generally being the most hilariously unlikable main character around. It's not uncommon to see your mechs iceskate around in cutscenes just before your gunner runs up and pumps six clips of ammo into an unsuspecting enemy in one round. The guy ejected after the second clip, sure, but that gunner is really focused on his job and that empty mech is in his way. As an encore your melee mech runs up and punches that poor human in the face with a knuckleduster the same size he is.

In comparison, Front Mission 4's mechanics are more serious. I wouldn't call them a return to form; it's essentially Front Mission 3 with most of the excess removed. Instead, the focus is on squad management and setting up your units such that they can assist in a teammate's attack as often as possible. It's slower but a lot more strategic than 3, and far more ready to kick your rear end if you screw up.

Are most NIS games like this?

Most NIS games are quirky RPGs, but if you can handle screwing around with stats and customisation I would recommend ZHP Unlosing Ranger to everyone ever. It's a light rogue-like / dungeon crawler with a plot that begins by lampooning superhero tropes and ends as the most triumphant thing ever.

Yeah, that I understand. What I am unsure of is why my PSP is letting me play content licensed to my US account when I am not, and never have, logged in to my US account on the PSP (as my firmware is out of date).

Pretty sure when you first transfer a game to your PSP it'll offer to / automatically flag the PSP as belonging to that account. You don't have to expressly log in on your PSP to play downloaded games - the PSP just has to have that flag. If you logged into your AU account from your PSP it'd overwrite that flag and lock you out of the game.

Oh dammit. Is any PSP capable of doing that? I really want to get Lunar off of the UMD to try and improve loading times.

Unless you have homebrew, it's entirely game-specific; they'll offer the choice, or they won't.

Why does the install of valkyria chronicles 2 keep getting corrupted? I am about 2 hours in and my install has corrupted twice now. I can't install the game and play it from the memory card anymore.

Are you sure it's actually outright corrupting? What I find often happens with my PSP is that if I leave it on standby for a while, then turn it back on and immediately try to load a level, it gets upset and bitches at me. If I go to options I can just turn Install right back on, though. I've always assumed it's because the PSP takes a moment to index the contents of the memory card, and leaving it alone for a couple seconds gives me a lot more success.

I can understand where the logic comes from, kind of? I don't know anyone who bothers to use the PSP for anything but games; Qriocity and all the different media hookups just lie there unused. On top of that, it's not like any of the PSP games available in Europe have any halfway decent multiplayer architecture.

Problem is that side by side with the 3000 (which presumably they're not phasing out) this looks like such a poor value proposition.

They're very much being phased out in my experience. Most major chainstores here have stopped carrying PSP hardware, especially for the 3000 series. Trying to find a new battery and memory card was like pulling teeth.

The PSP Street is out in the UK! I know because I bought one at the weekend, replacing my worn out and dying PSP-3000; the guy at the counter breathlessly reassured me that it would do absolutely everything my old 3000 did. He kind of forgot to mention (and I straight-out forgot) 'hey by the way it has no wireless', so given I still use my WLAN switch I had to take it back today.

... which is a shame, because otherwise I love the design they've got on it. It's a little chunky - about halfway between the fat and the slim - but that makes it easier to hold, in my opinion. It's also got a matte finish on the body rather than a gloss, which felt a thousand times better and actually felt for the first time like I had a decent grip on the thing. The battery is a fixed block that I couldn't figure out how to remove, which seems like it's asking for trouble, but for £89 it looked like a solid little unit.

e: The Radiant Red 3000 I ended up with at the end of the day was £50 cheaper than a black one, and I think I'm seeing why. This thing is pretty clearly hot pink.

Regarding Kiseki, god drat but I am never buying anything from Ghostlight again, because everything they touch just seems to either start out as poo poo or turn to it.

Just got my UK copy of Kiseki today and the entire packaging is bust - bent and ripped up box in French, an English-language overlay sticking out the back of the box and flapping around, completely broken apart game and soundtrack cases inside it. It was in a decent enough jiffy bag so unless the driver was absolutely determined to stamp on the parcel repeatedly, it got sent out like this.

Well now, that's just a tragedy.

The discs are fine! First thing I checked. I'm going to transplant it all to an empty case once I can get a spare. The whole thing just baffles me, but Ghostlight haven't exactly got a great running record over here, so it isn't entirely a surprise.

It and Fate/Extra are going to see me through Christmas cover at work, if only because I can't plonk a PS3 on my desk.

Holy poo poo it's still happening!

Is there any known and constant problem with PSPs just up and shutting themselves off? My brand new, out-of-the-box PSP3000 just cut out on me without warning in the middle of a game, despite having 80+% charge in the battery. This has happened across two different PSPs and two different batteries (one normal, one extended) and I know it's not my fat hand pushing the power button up because I've been paranoid about that since it started.

It happens fairly regularly - about once a week in general, with a lot of swing either way. I've always thought it was an internal short or something and just shut up and dealt with it until it was time to replace the entire unit, so I was kind of pissed when it immediately started happening again. I thought about the battery case as well, and have since replaced it. Guess I'll see if that works.

Also, what is the best Action RPG dungeon crawler on PSP? What is the best dungeon crawler on PSP period?

I'd vote Phantasy Star Portable 2 (Infinity, if you can handle easy Japanese) and Z.H.P. respectively.

Not really, as long as you're avoiding the weird wifi-less european model.

As a side note: if you don't want wifi and you can get a hold of one of the Street PSPs, really consider doing so. The shape's nice and chunky and fit my hands perfectly, and it's got no-slip material all over the drat thing so it felt a lot more secure in my hands. Their only problem aside from the wifi is a non-removable battery, so you can't swap it out for the 10hr extended one. Otherwise I'd totally own one.
