Every monster of the day better be an acid trip or else I'm dropping this show.

I don't get why people think that whenever studios like Shaft or Gainax use some typical tropes that they are being ironic. They are just appealing to their audience, not to make some sort of statement about the state of anime in the 21st century.

Did someone say naked magical girl transformation scenes?

Um, its not terribly explicit but I would kill myself if someone saw me looking at this at work.

Its Shaft so they're probably doing it ironically right guys.

I... I have to say, the art in the OP doesn't give me great enthusiasm, but I rather like SHAFT shows, so I'll give the first episode a try.

But, really, based on that picture, can anyone tell me what makes this show any different from the kinds of late-night anime that creepy NEETs watch all the time?

I hate to say it but that's the sort of market Shaft has always pandered to. They just typically do a better job of making their stuff funnier and watchable.

As far as what makes it different from the other shows, the visual style is nice, at the fight scene at the end is quite atypical compared to most magic girl knockoff shows. The dream sequence at the beginning was pretty trippy, too. At least give it a 1 ep test.

She is trying to kill the cat so as to prevent Madoka from becoming a magical girl. Her earlier lecture had the same purpose. I'd say Madoka probably caused that apocalypse from the beginning of the episode somehow.

It felt like they were trying to imply that to me, too. Guessing the cat and blonde-haired chick are either the main villains or at least unintentionally a catalyst to the apocalypse, with Madoka as the key.

Or that's my wish, at least. The protagonists in these stories always seem to take it for granted that whatever magical thing that first wants to work with them isn't evil, and it would be funny to see that turned on its head.

All this talk about turning Mahou Shoujo tropes on their head reminds me of Sailor Nothing a half-way decent look at Magical Girls. It's more metafiction than fan-fiction.

There's Narutaru too, although I guess that's more pokemon than magic girl.

Hey Arnold is the original wideface, I s'pose. I want to see some parody art of the two together.

I don't get why watching shows for young boys (Pokemon, super robot series, sentai) is considered okay, but watching shows for young girls (especially mahou shoujo) automatically makes you a pedo. It's a double-standard.

To be fair this show is made for lonely guys in their 20's. And most people on ADTRW either are indifferent or like Precure.

The faces of the girls in Madoka Magica/Hidasketch are wider than most anime character designs, yeah.

I'm really glad the wish didn't backfire, yeah. Hopefully the show manages to show us clearly that no wish is worth becoming a magical girl for like Homura seems to be saying.

If Madoka isn't suspicious of Kyuubee by next episode I don't know what the gently caress is wrong with her.

Well, leaving out the existence of a magical girl that apparently wants to fight/kill Sayaka and leaving out the bit about Sayaka's regeneration is pretty suspicious. But I guess the show doesn't portray her as particularly smart.

While I do agree with you on the reasoning behind Kyuubey's words, the opening scene had Homura as a magical girl and Madoka still being "you can save her if you just make a contract with me!" so yeah. Maybe Madoka's wish was to send Homura back in time?

Wow, this is a pretty good version of the time travel theory, I think. If Homura was doing a fight in a way that would have stopped the destruction of the world during that moment then Madoka probably destroyed everything by sending her back, thus Homura's words to her.

If this is the case I can't wait till we see younger Homura, or what remains of her if elder Homura did something. :3 Though, Homura killing herself would be unlikely if she's letting Madoka live. Assuming that time travel theory, anyways.

As far as the Homura being from the future thing goes, it seems the writer is pretty much shoving this in our face by now. I think its obvious by now he wants the average viewer to think this, whether its a red herring or not we'll see, because while clues have pointed that way they haven't been definite to say that for sure.

So, knowing how the loop works makes the OP make a more sense. Now time to start tossing theories around on the other parts of the op -- older Madoka and the cat. I'm guessing Madoka makes a wish along the lines of, "I wish that magical girls won't ever have to risk their souls or become witches again."

Then maybe Kyubey is replaced by a cat, because they're just as cute as he is.

I'd say that up-ing the episode count would be a good thing, but I'm not sure there's enough plot for 24 eps.

EDIT: Kyubey was created/assigned to make magical girls for grief energy, I'm not sure he can refuse to make a contract. Kind of like a cute robot with a lot of autonomy.

Well, even if he could, if we assume it takes no energy on his part to make a contract, then making a contract is NEVER a loss because there's a high chance she'll become a witch. Even if the wish took Homura out of his timeline, well, he really lost nothing from it.

So he's basically a salesman that is just trying to make the sale, as opposed to carefully keeping track of opportunity cost and such.

Anytime I see the OP, the naked Madoka part in it forces me to bash my head against the wall so much until my thinking is hosed up enough to imagine it was put into the OP ironically.

Afterwards, I make a post about fanservice in this thread.
