Hold your stomach until the end

Apologies if this is not the correct thread for this question but I'm trying to determine if spray on acrylic clear coat (over painted metal and plastic) can be lightly sanded for smoothness. Anyone have experience with Krylon Matte Finish? It is designed to be used with artwork preservation which leads me to believe that it isn't intended to be sanded afterwards. I could hit it with ultra fine sandpaper or 0000 steel wool but I don't know if I'll just be removing it or smoothing it. Thanks!

If you are trying to polish it then I would recommend putting on 2 to 3 coats and letting it dry for a couple of days first. After you are sure it's dry get some scratch-less scouring pads from the grocery store and try those first.

Mr. Clean Magic Erasers also work REALLY well for fine sanding applications like what you're talking about.

I've never used Krylon Matte Finish in the specific way you've mentioned, but when I finish my students' artwork to be hung in shows, I always spray it with that stuff. The Magic Erasers saved my rear end one year when I was tired and sloppily finishing work and accidentally sprayed the finish all over one of the frames/mat board/everything.

I'm thinking of making the doll head paper weight from this book (click on Craft Projects > Baby Head Paper Weight), but waterproofing it for an aquarium.

There'd be a hole at the base of the head where the plaster of paris would be exposed, and then I'd be spraying the entire thing with black and gold spray paint. I have absolutely no idea how I'd waterproof this, and as it's for a friend's axolotl tank, I'm very concerned about the risk of contaminating the water with anything that could hurt the little guy.

Any ideas?

Encase in resin or paint on some fish safe varnish? You might want to go ask some fish lovers in pet island, I think a few of them have built their own tank and know about fish safe glues.

Thanks again Tweak! This is what came of the cross. I like how it came out and I think I may have a new prototype for some stuff for my shop. It was tricky getting everything to hang right since the two small flowers are independently wired and all of the dangly bits are sewn and then glued to the flower backings. The gold chain was supposed to be behind the black dangle in all instances, but I kind of like how I screwed it up. Lot of work, but I love it. I have named it Isabella (because I name everything).

Sorry this one is so craptastic. I don't know what happened with the camera, but it gives a good size indication. The clip measures about 5 1/2 inches long or so.

Craptastic again, but hey, good show of the colors!

And the back! I'm always amazed at how neatly they wrap up and how they don't end up being a total crazy mess. Yeah, sometimes the process gets on my nerves because it isn't perfectly neat 100% of the time.

my feet firmly planted
on what, I do not know

I finished some little projects in this past week. Figured I'd pass them on.

One thing I love doing is taking things and making them more interesting. One such is this mirror, very cheap at Ikea, hell you can even find them in thrift stores for a buck. I like the simple lines of it, and the stain was a gorgeous colour. But I thought they needed dressing up a bit, so after a trip through the woods, and a glue gun attack, here's my simple mirror.

Click here for the full 2048x1536 image.

I have another mirror that's quite a bit bigger, and more elaborate on my other wall. Thing is, the glass was broken in the bottom right hand corner. I've been looking around casually for something to put on it, and it finally paid off. I went to a thrift store and bought a bag with a bunch of different craft items in it. Inside were these flowers that look almost like they're made from coloured burlap or something. I noticed the colour complimented one of the colours in my mirror, and voila, I finally had something to cover the break in the mirror.

Click here for the full 2048x1536 image.

I wish I could get a better picture but the camera was not cooperating that night, and the battery is dead till payday, so. This is the last one, of the entire mirror. Excuse that it is super dirty, ugh.

Click here for the full 1536x2048 image.

I'm pretty happy with the result. It's hard to tell in the photos but the flowers really aren't that intrusive, they look quite natural on the mirror. Not natural as in you could find them in nature, but natural as in it's not completely obvious that they weren't part of the original design.

Lately I've been scouring the Free section of Craigslist and some of the stuff has really made me sad that I don't have the ability (truck and strong man) to grab some of that stuff, rework it, make it awesome, and sell it. Ugh so much potential! If I could do that I'd be so happy, but a weakling chick with a 2 door Sunfire just won't do it. So many free pianos too, I have wanted a piano for so long. Sigh.

I know right? It breaks my designy heart when I browse it. One of my dreams in this life is to have a house, and renovate it into an amazing home. Every time I see something in the free section that I could make into something to fit my dream home, I die a little more inside. Apartment living boo hiss.

I think of how much money I could make repurposing and selling stuff, marketing it towards trendy people, too. I know I could make something like that work, but don't have the resources for it. Not shabby chic either, I don't like that style. I'm sure there's people out there that do it already.

Every time I see someone on Craigslist giving away their old entertainment center, I think how awesome it would be to repurpose it into a kid's kitchen playset. Then I remember I have a tiny car and none of my friends' or relatives' kids are the right age to use one. Someday, though!

We all need to move to the same house and hire out a warehouse for this very purpose. I would love to have the space to renovate stuff, my student hall space is so tiny I can't even have my sewing machine here

Anyway, I have a question. I found some really cool looking rocks on the beach and when they're damp their colours really shine through. Is there any way to preserve the wet look? They still look nice dry, but a bit dull.

I think you have to polish them in a rock tumbler or with one of those hand held thingies and essentially take off the outer layer of the rock. Pain in the arse - but maybe you know a geologist who will let you borrow his rock tumbler if you ask nicely and pretend to admire his collection of rocks. I had the exact same question when I was like 11 and was into collecting fossils and interesting stones (I was extremely cool and popular as a child) but I never had the commitment to actually polish my stuff. My boyfriend last dumped me to go study geology I HATE THEM ALL. But if that is my only option, then I guess I'm either going to have to find another rock geek or keep licking these pebbles every time I want to see their pretty colours.

I was looking at cheap properties yesterday, and it looks like we need to buy a small section of Detroit, label it Craft Goon City and renovate it like crazy, then make it our base of operation. Seeing as I am not a US citizen, this could be difficult. Therefore I humbly request a valentines offer of love from a DIY goon with ambitions to be mayor of Craft Goon City.

I found this for you http://www.ehow.com/how_5672278_put...iver-rocks.html Varnish! Marine varnish, one website mentioned. Apparently it's not permanent, but it won't disappear within a couple of days either, so.

Detroit would be perfect. We could renovate the entire city and bring it back to it's former glory. I'm not American either, so I wouldn't have the foggiest idea how to set it up quick and painlessly. If we wanted to fix anything up in Vancouver and it's environs, I can be of assistance. Definitely willing to relocate, though. I swear, if it were possible, I would love having a goon art/renovation/repurposing collective. P'raps Tweek is American, and is a vase aficionado. If so, we've got you covered.

Speaking of said vase, I love it. It's got a very organic look about it, which is the reason that Art Nouveau is my favorite style. It's gorgeous and you should be proud of it.

Aww, thank you. I like it too, it's actually my favourite piece from the whole uni year so far. It's pretty difficult to take a good photo of ceramic work too, especially when it's unfired (I am dreading it breaking in the kiln!), but I'm glad you've interpreted it as organic. It's a very tactile piece, almost cuddly. I'll update once I get it fired and glazed- it will most likely be a yellow ochre colour when I'm done with it.

I like the sound of Craft City, but I'm not leaving the Bay Area. How does Oakland or Berkeley sound? They're not the greatest places to live, but there's lots of warehouse space to rent. My current apartment is actually a warehouse space that was turned into a loft, and the place before this was a single-story apartment in a warehouse. This place doesn't have nearly as much room, but it's close to a couple of really good salvage yards where I find all kinds of weird stuff.

When I was a wee tyke I achieved this on my "pet rocks" through the copious application of clear nail polish. Granted they were tiny little rocks, maybe 2 cm diameter for the biggest, but it may be an option for you.

Tried my glass etching kit today. Went pretty okay but I got in a rush, so the dollar store glasses with small etchings on them aren't quite present quality. This is a bit late but sounds good to me. I don't even care where, the art collective is so amazing that if I thought for a minute we actually COULD do it, I'd be so working on it right now.

I was wondering, could we post craftish items in here to get suggestions? I've got a few things and I can't figure out what to do with them. I thought about posting another thread for that but I think it would fit in here, and I like this thread anyway. I trust this thread's judgment.

I found a plastic porthole that I might do something fun with, I posted about it in the Etsy thread in GBS. Someone had posted a tentacle trophy, I fell in love with it, and a month later I find this porthole. So I might reserve it for that.

This is the porthole and tentacle in question in case people don't follow the etsy thread.

Tentacle artist wants over a grand for it.

So I found this in a thrift store a couple days ago. Take off the logo and we're in business. I also thought about doing a diorama behind it. I could probably make that tentacle but I know I couldn't paint it so nicely. No airbrush. Diorama could be interesting though. Make some sea monkeys and stuff. I loved that Jules Verne google thing they did a few days ago.

I want a Bane.

I've never seen anything like that around here. At most you'd have to hire movers, and I'm so beyond broke right now, my kitty's been sick, etc etc. Movers cost a fortune too. I called my dad after she wrote me back and asked if he'd grab some guys and help, and all he did was bitch about it and say that he swore he'd never move a piano again after moving one 30 years ago that I don't even remember ever happening. To be fair he has a bad back, but I might as well say I never had the sort of parents that would bend over backwards to make their little princess happy.

I tried for an hour to find one of my friends or family members that might want it, but they either weren't home or whatever and I got no response. If I couldn't have it, I wanted someone I knew to take it, cause at least I'd be able to lovingly fondle it and play chopsticks once in awhile. But nobody was around. CL free people want their stuff taken immediately after it's posted, so when the lady mailed me back and asked if I was going to come round, I told her to pass it onto the next person.

Then I went and drowned my sorrows in diet Dr. Pepper. Heh.

I've looked at the free section in a few other cities, and it's weird because Vancouver has over 100 new postings every day, and other cities had a small handful, like from 3-20. Is that typical? I'm curious what everyone else's free section looks like. I found it odd that Montreal and Toronto didn't even have half the listings that Vancouver did. Calgary had like 3 a day.

I know there are sites where you can download the tarot images to print them on your own cardstock. Just google "printable tarot" or the like. If you're looking for something that doesn't need a whole deck, that might work out for you. I imagine ink could get pretty pricey after a while though.

I thought about that, but I'm pretty sure the ink would end up costing more than a full priced deck.
