Because Behman (Nicolas Cage) accidentally kills an innocent girl during a siege, he begins to have second thoughts about the holiness of the Crusades and deserts God's army along with his companion in all things melee, alcohol, and whore, Felson (Ron Perlman). How this didn't hit him during the years he spent as a crusader slaughtering thousands in the name of a benevolent God I don't understand, but let's not get nitpicky. After a month wandering back home, Behman and Feslon come upon a town cursed with a plague and a girl accused of being a witch and the cause of the pestilence. Once again pressed into the service of the church and spurred by the injustice placed on the girl and his own guilt, Behman and his group escort the girl to a far off abbey where the monks there can give her a fair trial and lift the plague. What Season of the Witch lacks is polish. Most of what we know about the various stock characters is only through very brief implications; not that there's much to explain in the first place. The actions scenes are cribbed from other movies. How many times have we seen one soldier jump over another in slow motion just to stab an enemy? The story is a fun idea but boring in some places. I'll just say that at the bridge scene, you may want to leave to use the bathroom and spare yourself. I did enjoy the movie for what it is and it's not as bad as I thought it was going to be. The acting is never overblown and I like the idea of a plain, bread and butter fantasy story with a quest but Season of the Witch is not much more than that. 3 out of 5 Edit: And, hey, I posted this in the main forum and not the film dump. I hope this can be moved. Not a Duck fucked around with this message at 17:16 on Jan 9, 2011 |

Kro-Bar posted:How much Nick Cage-ing around does Nick Cage do in this movie? Not a lot, actually. He and Perlman make a good buddy team, though. I'd give the movie 2 of 5. I saw it with a friend because we both like Cage and had no idea what this was about other than it was getting horrible reviews. It's pretty terrible. The costumes and some of the settings look good. Other than that it is bad bad bad. The villain at the end has the voice of a cartoon character and just looks silly. I can't really think of much good to say about this other than it was short and never really dragged. I laughed a lot, but not due to anything intentional on the directors part.
