Does anyone here shoot at GAT guns? Is it just me or does the ventilation in their range pull gunsmoke PAST your face? The vents behind the firing line are all black, and my experience there leads me to believe that it's terribly ventilated. I'm on the hunt for an outdoor range with a generally safe experienced crowd, any recommendations in the NW suburbs?

Nearby and either open to the public or with immediate available and affordable membership? Good luck. I'm in Palatine at the moment and I've ended up at McMiller Sports Center all the way up in Eagle, Wisconsin for my outdoor long range needs. For the most part, you aren't going to find anything outdoors that is less than an hour's drive away. And yeah, GAT is pretty bad. I got kicked off their range once for "firing too fast, but nice groups." I go there to fondle stuff since their selection is half decent.

Although it keeps getting pushed back I hear On-Target in crystal lake is supposed to open this week. It'll be indoor but supposedly state of the art air handling and lead safety. They also will have rifle lanes for up to .50bmg. If their shop is reasonable at all they might put a serious dent in GAT's business. http://www.ontargetsite.com/range.php http://www.prweb.com/releases/2012/4/prweb9437638.htm Depending on how much more BS gets thrown up the shop my brother works at is still trying to open an outdoor range in woodstock. http://woodstockadvocate.blogspot.c...ting-range.html

Mcmiller sounds great, about an hour and 20min away but Lake Geneva is on the way (stop for lunch and a beer on the way back). I generally enjoy that drive up into Wi anyway. At GAT it's funny, because I have seen people disciplined for shooting too fast but on the other hand when I was there yesterday a guy who worked there was rapid firing into the backstop with no target in the lane. I suppose he could be a gunsmith testing but it does give serious mixed signals. On target does sound pretty cool, it will be around 15 minutes away from me so I'll be sure to check it out. Hopefully they have a range safety plan that involves more than occasionally viewing monitors between helping customers. I've seen some pretty goofy stuff, potential for "lead exposure" is high at GAT (both poisoning and holes in you). PeppysDilz fucked around with this message at May 6, 2012 around 12:47 |

There's also a place in McHenry, it's a bicycle shop on the ground floor and a gun shop/pistol range in the basement; it's pretty great, and they rent pistols too. Edit for name: HP Shooting Center

If I keep shooting here I'm going to have to buy a respirator as when USPSA is over I can taste the lead in the back of my mouth and I honk all kinds of black poo poo up the next morning. I just got e-mail confirmation about on target opening this wednesday. It sounds more like an open house than open for business but I'll swing by either way and check it out as it sounds like the uspsa and idpa groups in mchenry may be shifting there soon so they can accommodate more shooters. Just wanted to update that I did stop in and check out the new place in crystal lake last week. They had a decent selection of new guns in stock but all were MSRP or higher and one half of the range was closed. I don't plan on buying guns or shooting here as I can shoot for free whenever but the Mchenry IPSC and IDPA groups will probably move here so I'll probably end up trying out their range at some point. I also got a bit more info about the range in McHenry that got the green light. From what I heard it's supposed to go in the old lee auto parts and will be a private tactical range.

Just a word for anyone close to Champaign. My dealer (Parker Firearms and Ballistics) is opening an actual storefront somewhere on Staley Road (not sure of actual address yet) for his business now that the local news did a hit piece on him running the shop out of his basement (and using a parent that lives several blocks away that looked to be feigning "concern" and a bunch of rich stinkyhole parents whose kids play at the baseball field down and across the street from his shop). I'll likely be helping him out by putting in some hours helping to run the place and I'm in talks with a couple locations near said shop for buying a building and opening an indoor range. Looking at 3-4 months before opening, likely. Cross your fingers, kids, Champaign county may yet have an indoor range for public use!

Extremely short notice, but there's a 3gun match out at the Hollow Training Center in Mt. Carroll tomorrow morning at 10am. Looks like I'm rolling out solo since everyone that could have gone backed out at the last minute. From what I hear, this facility is amazing, it used to be one of the Blackwater training grounds or something similar. Sounds like it is going to be an awesome match, and if there's anyone else that ends up going, hit me up and we can do the squad thing or something.

Crossposting from the news thread: So the Chicago gun ordinance took another hit in the courts today. Basically, Judge Samuel Der-Yeghiayan says that the wording in the part of the ordinance that defines "unlawful use of a weapon" was too vague and unconstitutional as it deprived people with non-violent misdemeanors of the right to self-defense. Judge Der-Yeghiayan posted:"There is something incongruent about a nonviolent person, who is not a felon but who is convicted of a misdemeanor offense of simple possession of a firearm, being forever barred from exercising his constitutional right to defend himself in his own home in Chicago against felons or violent criminals," Der-Yeghiayan wrote. That seems like pretty strong language. In my personal experience there is a lot of ambiguity throughout the ordinance which makes this next quote a little dubious. An unnamed city official posted:Since it applies only to one provision of the ordinance, a City Hall official said, city attorneys do not believe the ruling will have a significant impact on the entire ordinance. Interesting times in the Windy City’s gun politics. Still glad I moved out though. I wonder if some of the procedural issues will start to be targeted. There are a lot of traps you could fall into while trying to make yourself legal which could cause you to lose your ability to register a gun. Examples such as moving into the city with guns from another jurisdiction or failing to provide an annual report resulting in your guns becoming "unregisterable." If the judge is saying that the Second Amendment protects your rights so strongly, then I wouldn't be surprised if some of the bureaucratic nonsense gets challenged.

I'm going to be undertaking the long stupid process otherwise known as the Chicago Firearms Permit course, any suggestions on where best to take this course? It looks like fees vary from 100 to 150 ish. Also, anyone know if I can even register my Benelli m4 in Chicago? I looked at the ordinance and talked to some Sergeant in their gun registration office. He says he doesn't know and to call back when some guy who knows more about it returns. looking at it, 18" barrel, 5 rounds, regular stock, but it has a pistol grip, so I have no idea.

So we are a month away from the annual duck blind draw for Illinois and I know people are always saying the would like to give hunting a try, but they don't have a place to go or anyone to take them. Well here is your opportunity to give duck hunting a try. Most waterfowl areas in Illinois hold an annual draw to allocate blind locations for each area, if someone draws a blind they can declare 2 or 3 partners to help build a blind. The blind builders get preference to hunt the blind all season, but it can be used by anyone in their absence. I got lucky and drew a blind last year on the Kankakee river, but I really want to hunt a better area and that is going to require people to up my odds. The draws require you show up in person for an hour or so on a weekend in July. I will be drawing at Mazonia near Joliet on July 28th and then at Woodford SFWA near Peoria on July 29th. I have 1 or 2 people drawing with me so far, but the more the merrier. If you want to draw you will need a valid FOID card, a hunting license for last year or this year and a state waterfowl stamp. The draw specifics are on the IL DNR website, but check in usually runs from 10 am to 2 pm with the drawing starting immediately after and taking around an hour. I had a great time last year building my blind, and knowing I always had a place to hunt even considering we had poor results last year. For me building a duck blind really upped the experience of hunting and the general outdoor experience. So here is my standing offer to Illinois goons wanting to try a waterfowl trip. I will supply waders, decoys and guidance to anyone that wants to try a duck hunting trip this year, assuming I get a blind somewhere. The waders will be bigger than a size 9 this year and you will need nothing less than some warm clothes and a shotgun, but I can provide spares if you only own a cylinder choked 870. Regardless of whether I get a blind this year, I will be putting in for reserved duck hunts at walk in areas. The period to apply for those dates begins on August 14 and ends August 28. If people want to pick a date to hunt the Illinois river around Peoria sometime in late November or early December we can almost guarantee someone will get a first choice hunt and the ability to bring guests along. I'm trying to plan a long way out this year. I now live in the Brookfield, IL area so carpooling for most Chicago/Suburb goons wouldn't be very hard. If you have any questions feel free to ask. PM me if you are interested. Flatland Crusoe fucked around with this message at Jun 30, 2012 around 00:00 |

quote:The waders will be bigger than a size 9 this year I am totally interested in going again this year and wouldn't mind helping out building. I assume having more people at the drawing just increases the chances of getting a blind, correct? I'll be around July 28 and 29, so just keep me posted. Already bought a hunting license again this year so I just need to add the waterfowl stamps. Might just buy my own waders too, especially if I decide to go more than once again. Chicagoland goons who want to hunt should come along. Flatland Crusoe is wise and won't surprise sex you in the woods. charliebravo77 fucked around with this message at Jun 29, 2012 around 21:43 |

Every person who shows up for the draw with the required paperwork is entered into the drawing, then the person whose name was drawn has a month to assign build partners. Groups with any decency will pass on a draw after someone in their group has pulled drawn a blind, since you can only be a builder on 1 blind statewide. You do not need hunter safety to enter the draw if you buy the apprentice hunting licence with your other tags I forgot to mention that the annual blind draws are more like a bbq/college football tailgate atmosphere, a lot of people like to make a day out of it. I personally am all about getting in and out with some scouting of the area if I do get a blind draw. By time the draw comes up I will have already talked to the area biologist and crunched kill sheet numbers in excel. As far as waders and gear for this year, its really going to be worth seeing if/where we draw a blind. I did get a kayak this spring so we will have more options as far as transporting gear and people. http://www.dnr.illinois.gov/hunting...indDrawings.pdf Bonus pic of last years blind:
