The anti-porn new rule was pretty weak. Didn't even pick the low lying fruit of people getting too fat to be sexy or mention that it being easier to just jerk-off might not be entirely the dude's fault. Really though it just seemed like a generic stand-up bit with no teeth or commentary on anything even remotely pertinent The episode was still made great by West though, guy has a gift for word play and oration

The 4th panel member pop-in is the worst part of the show. Sometimes the one-on-one interviews are pretty sketchy but there's a fairly good success/failure ratio. The 4th panel member has worked out once in recent memory with Colbert's Physicist buddy. The rest of the time it ranges from mediocre but pointless (Friends guy) to weak and detrimental like Kevin Smith or Martin Short. They've got nothing useful to say and seem to amuse Maher more than the audience. It breaks up the flow of the panel worse than the prop segment and sometimes the show just does not recover from the loss of momentum

Reading Shooting the Hippo by Linda McQuaid right now. It's about the banking industry colluding with business and government in Canada to keep inflation at an artificially low level despite knowing (and partly because) it raises unemployment. Higher unemployment means people ask for fewer wage increases and are less sure of their positions and thus less likely to cause problems for the powers that be. It's a really good read and helped me gain a little more insight into the kind of thing that's going on across the US right now with politicians more than willing to allow the sacrifice index of unemployed people to rise as it helps push the anti-worker's rights agenda.

Stop all this political chatter everyone, it's time to talk about dance choreography! What the gently caress was that, he finally gets a reasonable Republican capable of more than just holding his own and instead they derail things to talk about art

It wasn't as bad as I was expecting (perhaps due to lowered expectations) but Belzer did Rob Williams himself a bunch of times. Bill was doing piss poor moderation, if Dan and Belzer's speaking times had been reversed it would have the makings of a great episode. The panel crusher wasn't as obtrusive as usual either which helps

Moderate amusement had by all. Nothing too irritating but also nothing too compelling. The "I'll wait..." part where he thinks his jokes aren't getting the laughs they deserve was probably the low point

Best episode in a long time, and Harry proved to be one of the rare comedians brought onto the show who is exceedingly well informed and able to throw the odd highly appropriate comedy bomb in from time to time. Too bad Salam didn't become the same furious train wreck he did last time.

magiccarpet posted:That was the most uncomfortable episode yet. Didn't have Robin Williams. Also not nearly as tense as the recent Breitbart episode
