OK, I have what is probably a silly question here, but does one have to participate in a newbie or 3 in order to participate in a regular one? Looks like I joined too late to do anything with mustard (which is a real bummer, cause I've got like a million different kinds that I'd love to put to some creative use), but am I effectively forbidden from taking part in a normal ICSA thing until I'm proven or what have you? I wouldn't expect to ever win (I'm looking at some of these past ones, and they're amazing!) but playing sounds fun.

Just go for it. NICSA ones are just designed to help people learn to cook and you won't be participating if you're a regular pro but nobody's stopping you from competing in the normal ones.

Sure, take your pick! Your ICSA would most likely be in November while the next free NICSA spot is in about a year unless someone wants to trade slots with you.

How long after the current ICSA ends does the new one usually pop up? I want to give people some time to recharge before I spring another contest on them, but I don't know if there's a typical schedule for this stuff or not.

From the OP, the challenges are typically held about once a month. The seem to have picked up a bit recently, as I recall a month or two dry spell over the summer, but maybe that's just because I didn't participate. Now, I have the next NICSA, and I was planning on starting it the first week of October to let people recharge their batteries and for me to save up for prizes. I believe that voting is going to run til the 29th for the lunchbox challenge, so I'd say maybe two weeks after that (Enough time to that if someone really wanted to do ICSA's back to back, they should at least get one paycheck in-between) It's a pretty informal system overall, and you might just get people saying "We just had one. Can you postpone for a week?". No one is going to ask for your head if you start one up too soon.

Are NICSAs supposed to be any easier/harder than the usual ones? I might have given it a try on the early ones when it was simpler, even cast iron was pretty straightforward. "Make a rainbow of dishes" and the newest movie theme intimidate me. The latest regular ICSA themes seem easier but I know I'll be blown away by the pros.

I've always thought of N/ICSAs as opportunities to challenge myself with new techniques and ingredients. The prizes are a nice incentive but what I really get out of participating is learning and doing something new. Obviously you can do this without following the structure of the contest but I think part of the fun is seeing how other people interpret the theme.

I hope nobody minds that I'm holding the next ICSA for a little while to give people a breather. If nobody wants a breather I can totally get it up sooner.

No, they're supposed to be simpler and smaller scale than ICSA, the last two chairpeople just don't seem to understand that. For the record PF, can we actually spell out in the guidelines that NICSA is supposed to be simpler and encouraging to first timers?

Yeah, IIRC the first NICSA theme was "sandwiches" and subsequent themes were things like "breakfast"

I am hosting the next NICSA, and I don't want it to be too overcomplicated, at the same time I would love to see a lot of entries.. I was thinking 'NICSA - Down South' - wether you're living in the States, India or whereever - prepare a regional dish from the south of your country (breakfast, dessert, dinner, cake, whatever) - restrictions are that it is supposed to be one meal, meaning that it can be as many dishes as you like, but only for one meal (or something equally simple - lunch could be good too) - should make place for whatever kind of dietary restrictions people have, and at the same time show-case something new.. (that or Pie - I love pie, and I am piss-poor at pie) Furthermore I was thinking of changing the price rules a bit around.. There will be no second price, but the first price will be a gift card for amazon for the amount of USD5*number of entries - or something like that (with a maximum of say USD 100 or something).. Would that be completely idiotic, or am I on to something with this thinking?

I like the "down south" theme. It's cute, and could have some fun stuff go down. The prizing scheme is all you though, no guidance there.

Happy Hat posted:Would that be completely idiotic, or am I on to something with this thinking? I still think that this is a theme that is more complicated than it should be for a NICSA. The ones that are REALLY straightforward, like the first four - comfort food, sandwiches, breakfast and soup are way more accessible to people that don't cook very much or that have almost no experience at all cooking, and I think that it's awesome to have the NICSA be more about encouraging new cookists to post about food they're making than to have it be a deathmatch between new cooks.

That's a nice idea and all, but NICSA is about encouraging new cooks and lots of entries, not about forcing people to do math and geography. Most cooks just starting out can't afford a compass, so they wouldn't have the first clue about how to find the south, let alone how to cook the south's complicated and foreign cuisine. The most successful NICSA was NICSA:Breakfast. If you really want to do something complicated, how about NICSA:Lunch?

I vote NICSA: Braising. Super simple, cheap, easy, and gets people to start doing something really awesome.

As someone who's only been seriously cooking for less than a year, I don't see a problem with the theme. It may be at the upper end of what's acceptably complicated for a NICSA, but it seems to me the theme encompasses such a wide range of foods choices that it doesn't have to be needlessly complex or expensive for real beginners to find something fitting the theme.
