Alright question time. It says in the OP that its suggested you grab a midi controller first, cool, I can do that. http://www.uniquesquared.com/korg-n...ller-black.html This is in the OP and it looks pretty nice, so I think I'm gonna get this soonish. For audio output, my laptop is like all others in that I have speakers and a single headphone jack. Will buying http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...=A2JP8H9SSVETMS allow me to cue songs with one out from my laptops 1/8" jack and another out from the Numark going to my speakers, which use a 1/8" -> RCA adapter? Or, if that don't work, can I just use RCA outs on the Numark straight to my receiver? Finally, for babbys first mixer: http://www.amazon.com/Numark-MIXTRA...id=771Z059DH3O1 Has a soundcard built in, but I'm guessing that having a soundcard separate of the mixer could be much more useful. http://www.amazon.com/Numark-Total-...id=771Z059DH3O1 Wasn't entirely sure on the differences between these three, so I figure'd I'd ask. http://www.amazon.com/Numark-MIXTRA...id=771Z059DH3O1 Here's the one without the soundcard. They all seem like real loving steals, but I'm obviously gonna bow to your expertise in this.

artard posted:Thanks for the tips everyone! The gig itself is kind of a special case as my buddy runs a non-profit org in Colorado that provides buses to concerts and shows and likes to have live music on the buses. This one specifically is for the bus going from Boulder->Red Rocks for the Bassnectar show on Saturday. I'm kind of debating how high-energy I should make it but I'm guessing people will be getting pretty amped-up preshow so I will be playing more of my "wubwub" tracks for that set and for the return set it will be a lot more low key melodic dubstep. When I start to get overly anxious about it I remind myself it's a really small "venue" and that I will just be doing the same thing I do all the time in the comfort of my own home and feel pretty good about my ability to perform. Anyway, this gig isn't exactly huge but I'm hoping it leads to repeat performances for the Bus2Show people and I have also been networking with a bunch of friends involved in the Whomp Truck and who run a sound camp at Burning Man so I'm hoping to leverage this into bigger gigs in the future thats actually an awesome gig

The Dark Wind posted:Thanks for the advice guys! I find that Boston's scene is kinda unusual, since the EDM community is rather small and close knit, so when you go to a show, even as early as like 9:30 PM or so, there's already a pretty drat good amount of people there that all just want to start dancing like crazy. I've almost never seen a real "opening" DJ set, since the majority of the time as soon as I show up they're already starting to play some pretty loud and crazy stuff, and that kind of energy just keeps going and never stops until 2:00 AM or so. Most of that kind of stuff probably wouldn't fly anywhere else. Eitherway, I've always known not to play the crazy popular bangers as an opening DJ and leave that for the headliner, but at the same time I had been wondering if I should just stick to one subgenre, or venture out into related subgenres and kind of just build the energy using tracks from various different places, but the above advice pretty much completely answered that question. where the gently caress in boston are you because i want this when i visit boston

What kind of transitions they're doing, especially the ones where it's not a simple beatmatch/bass swap. What songs are they selecting, and how does that relate to what's happening/not happening on the dance floor and the energy level as the night progresses? Are they using the filter or other fx to built tension and suspense well, or is it a knob you wish you could go rip off their mixer because they play with it too much? Glow records most of their stuff. I dont remember where to find it though. At some bar last night there was a dude who kept legitimately messing up, cutting songs too early in the middle of words and poo poo, leaving tracks playing against each other out of sync. I felt bad crowd wasnt into it and poo poo, its just so awkward to watch a dude drown like that

Alright so two things: Roommate got into vinyl, I'm in love and I need it and there's nothing anyone can do to stop me. Problem being, new laptop has only USB 3.0, and I had made the idiotic assumption an international business like NI would ensure compatibility at some point, but its been almost a year and no dice, as far as I know. What are my solutions for the USB problem, and switching to digital vinyl? Serato looks nice but Rane SL2 clocks in at 500 which is stupid when I already have software and an upgrade to digital vinyl is 120. I guess I'll need a mixer with an internal, since my old external soundcard just BSOD's on install now. And I'm right in thinking I can pick whichever platters I want, into mixer into audio interface into laptop and be done? Or is this USB thing going to require a more involved workaround?

Gonna grab the turntables and toss the controller on ebay as soon I get my hands on some funding. Vinyl is just so reassuring thats the only word I can think of.
