Free to Play
Update: Shitloads of stuff added to gold store this expansion.

The free to play stuff lets you buy a lot of the rares/exotics for the new currency, Gold, which is earned through playing the game in pretty much any form. Note: While this is a huge improvement over the old system, you should pretty much expect to have to buy into at least something. The gold store has more recently been expanded to include a whole ton of commons/uncommons and a couple of the first expansions in their entirety. A decent list of decks that are easy to pull together is available here To

What is Poxnora?
Poxnora is best described as a CCG with final fantasy tactics-style gameplay or any other turn based strategy board game. There are 8 factions to choose from each with reasonably unique themes. As of the most recent expansion the game has switched to a free to play model which allows you to buy cards with magical poxgold earned by playing matches. Play modes include campaigns, 1v1 and 2v2. Whereas 1v1 allows you to pick both full faction and split faction decks, for the moment 2v2 is limited purely to full faction.

Cards? but... how...
Well, "runes", each deck is made up of 30 of them from 4 categories; Champion, Spell, Relic and Equipment. You can have as many of each kind as you like but generally you should expect your deck to include around 15 champions. You deploy the various runes in-game from the runedock at the top of the screen and pay their "nora" cost which you can think of as mana or whatever the hell you like. The cards come in 6 flavours (Common, Uncommon, Rare, Exotic, Limited, Legendary) which really don't mean much except how likely you are to pull them out of a box or in some cases whether or not they're still available.

How do I start playing this wonderful game?
There are free trial decks unlocked by completing the tutorials for each faction, however these are self-contained decks and you can't level your runes nor include them in other decks unless you pay for the battlegroup (starter battlegroups are currently due to be updated soon so you should probably hold off on buying any of them). You can also throw down some cash to get started buy buying one of the expansion boxes in their store, a rune box (10 packs) runs around $30 and will net you atleast one guaranteed exotic and a pile of other stuff. It's worth consulting with goons to find out which box will get you the most value so consider doing that before buying.

Premade Decks
Much like your favourite old deck boxes for [card game]. For a relatively condensed cost you get a pretty high power deck (perfectly meta viable). Currently there is only one Theme deck per faction. While intact you can use these decks to play "Theme" matches but there's really no point, hack them up and enjoy cheaper decks for regular play.

Elven Valor (KF) $13 - Long range/high speed deck, based on normal KF strengths.
Bonesaw (FW) $15 - Contains a large portion of what you need for skeletons, pretty good overall.
Irregulars (SL) $8 - Standard Skeezick deck, low cost champs for mass champing and some powerturn spells to get poo poo done.
Balefire (UD) $12 - Fire deck, ampable damage type on high damage units, pretty straight-forward face smash deck.
Permafrost (ST) $7 - Frost deck, also ampable, less damage than the fire deck but better ranged options and larger AoEs.
Neuromancy (FS) $15 - Psychic deck! ampable to a lesser extent, contains passive damage based on proximity and a shitload of control spells.
Winged Terror (SP) $15 - Regular old Voil deck, contains the setpieces needed to warcry powerturn and be a boss bat-owner.
Savagery (IS) $7 - Conan's bros, not much to say; contains most of the major IS spells and most of the good Barbarians.

I need something common/uncommon but trading for them is awful.
You're in luck! There's a chance that the remnants of the old Goonbank might contain just what you're looking for! The goonbank is currently held by Cloudchaos and consists mostly of runes from previous expansions so try there first if you're having trouble locating something. After that you can always just ask in guild chat and failing that (though unlikely) the gold store provides.

This game is confusing and I am confused.
Champions move based on their speed and action point pool, at the beginning of each round you gain ap equal to your speed and can store ap up to 4 above your speed value, the basic attack chain is 3ap, 5ap, 8ap, 11ap which means outside of some major intereference 2 attacks per round at most. Each rune costs the nora amount indicated in the runedock, you accrue nora at the beginning of each of your turns from your shrine and any fonts you own. In a last ditch attempt to turn a match around you can also transfigure your shrine or avatar into a champion at the cost of halving your shrine-based nora generation.

Basic Tips
-Unless you are attacking always try and save 4ap per round so that the following turn you will have the maximum ap you can hold
-Contesting fonts is important but if you sacrifice too many units to do it it can cost you the game
-Until you have a better grasp of the game it's always better to drop another champ than to risk wasting a spell
-Don't worry too much about how often you're winning until your champs have some levels, it can make a big difference
-Try and refine your deck by cutting out things that you never end up using or ask some goons to suggest alternative champions that can perform multiple jobs
-Your turn timer is 1:45 (2:00 in 2v2), this means you need to spend the opposing player's turn reading the abilities of their champions and planning your turn until you get the hang of what units will be doing what.
-If you need general faction advice your best bet is talking to the long-term players like Regulate, Mageyapo, Kylowinter, Artifice, Spclken, Lamedevil, Zoopador, Sidmouth, Lljkbingo and Cloudchaos (Ignore all advice from Daltos and most advice from Teger and Primitive)

Factions
Each deck can be either 30 runes from one faction (full faction) or 15 runes each from 2 factions (split faction). When you choose a split faction deck you will get half the faction bonus from both factions. In addition to this there are also split faction races now which are self-contained themes which require you to be running atleast one of the factions they belong to.

Forglar Swamp(FS)

FS has undergone some changes in playstyle over the years but has now settled on being really annoying. Lots of passive effects and mobility as well as good nora gen make it a bitch and a half and the faction has consistently remained one of the top despite piles of FS players claiming it's bad. The faction is largely populated with frogs, frogmen, squidmen and aquatic thingers. Themes include aquatics/semi-aquatics/frogmen(Boghoppers)/squidmen(Firk) but generally you're just better off picking some good stuff and rolling with it.

Newest Theme: Jellebrium! Evil mind-surprise sex jellyfish that gain extra stuff from enemy cooldowns, largely support based but pretty deadly anyway.

People to ask about this faction: Zoopador, Lamedevil

Faction Bonus:
FF = +6 nora per round
SF = +3 nora per round

Ironfist Stronghold(IS)

The faction for midgets and buff guys. Most of the runes in this faction are in some way defensive meaning most of the champions are either buff as hell or can heal. In addition to this IS contains possibly the strongest noragen but at the biggest disadvantage of eating up to 4 runeslots. Dwarves, barbarians and constructs are your choices here.

Newest Theme: Grintmaw Trolls! Tough/cheap rockmen that sing and get tougher when their friends are hit.

People to ask about this faction: Spclken

Faction Bonus:
FF = -6 damage from all spells
SF = -3 damage from all spells

K'thir Forest(KF)

Tree people. Speed is the game for the hippy faction with their faction bonus being potentially the strongest. Mobility, range and healing are the main ways you'll be outplaying people along with a good selection of crowd control spells. No real noragen to speak of which means you're playing with what you earn. This faction is the one to pick if you're a fan of trees, snakes, bears, bearmen(Garu) and elves.

Newest Theme: Vashal! Hideous little ratmen that give you nora for being hit.

People to ask about this faction: Spclken

Faction Bonus:
FF = +1 speed +1 ap pool
SF = +1 ap pool

Savage Tundra(ST)

Tanks everywhere. This faction is reliant on huge amounts of health and not-irrelevant healing capabilities. Lots of high-range units, ampable damage types and big, bad AoE spells designed to make everyone hate you. Recently ST has undergone a heavy push in the direction of flight-based decks. The main themes here are yetis, blue people(Jakei), catpeople(Lonx) and frost amplify.

Newest Theme: Ferren! Wise ferret-men who have bad damage but stack debuffs like crazy. Also very annoying.

People to ask about this faction: Rukruk, Sidmouth, Regulate

Faction Bonus:
FF = +10hp
SF = +5hp

Forsaken Wastes(FW)

The faction of choice if you want to passively troll the entire player base. Regardless of what runes you pick and how you play someone will be angry and claim that FW is bullshit. Low cooldowns, efficient units, global damage and impressively annoying effects are all over this faction and since the champions are all dead guys or goths, people get even madder. FW has some of the best counters available because of their (currently) poor comparative champ power. Your themes of choice are skeletons, zombies, humans or attrition.

Newest Theme: Creepers! Weird units; cannot deploy at fonts but increase the range of your shrine deployment zone each time one is deployed.

People to ask about this faction: Artifice, Zoopador, Cloudchaos

Faction Bonus:
FF = -60% champion cooldowns
SF = -30% champion cooldowns

Sundered Lands(SL)

SL is the bad guys equivalent to IS and there's some lore reason for that which no one cares about. Generally the toughest champions thanks to the faction bonus as well as impressively annoying spells which can sometimes swing matches. Lately they've beenn on a roll of self-synergy decks which keep them in the running. No noragen at all but this faction largely relies on efficient tankiness to sustain them through the mid-game. Themes are dragonpeople(Draksar), mutantpeople(Skeezick), dragons and bugs.

Newest Theme: Skywings! Super fast dragons with a bunch of damage and bullshit that will probably get toned down.

People to ask about this faction: Davre, Zoopador

Faction Bonus:
FF = -20% non-spell damage received
SF = -10% non-spell damage received

Underdepths(UD)

The resident fantasy staple faction. Mostly naked women and giant demon-y things with a huge focus on beating the poo poo out of things in melee. While generally supposed to be the most damaging faction this isn't often the case and instead it ends up being viable primarily because of secondary effects like relocating and recouping nora from dying units. Acceptable non-zero noragen despite not being fantastic at it, this faction is going to be relying on one-rounding enemy champs for a long time. Themes are purple elves(Deep Elves), demons, fire amp and spiders.

Newest Theme: Goblins! Generally weak but well-costed dickery units, some are able to steal abilities from enemy units.

People to ask about this faction: Mageyapo, Kylowinter

Faction Bonus:
FF = +4 melee damage +2 ranged damage
SF = +2 melee damage +1 ranged damage

Shattered Peaks(SP)

Midgets ruled by large guys, Cyclops and bat people. The main theme of this faction is efficiency be it in nora cost or in huge amounts of options. This faction can get away with all kinds of poo poo because people always underestimate how much variety they can have going on at once. Lots of aoe options, good equipment choices, great spell selection and lots of support champs to go around. No noragen but you won't necessarily be missing it with this faction bonus. Themes are midgets(Moga) + rhinomen(G'hern), cyclops, batpeople(Voils) and lightning.

Newest Theme: Slags! Splatter ooze everywhere and then make use of it, also have a surprisingly diverse set of units.

People to ask about this faction: Sidmouth, Lamedevil, Lljkbingo, Mageyapo

Faction Bonus:
FF = 12% nora refund on champions
SF = 6% nora refund on champions

Split Faction Themes
Hurrah, these were introduced to make all the FF players angry as hell but in the process some neat themes came about. While these champions can be played in FF decks they will only receive the split faction bonus anyway. In order to use these units your deck must be constructed with atleast 1 of the 2 factions they belong to.

Stitched(FW/UD)

The coolest ones. These guys are made out of bits of whatever the hell they found, dead guys, old buildings, fish, etc. they rely on being able to reconstruct dead stitched into new stitched and turn enemy units into piles of fresh materials. This is the theme to roll with if you want to just swarm all over the other guy and be a huge dick about it.

People to ask about this faction: Kylowinter, Artifice

Kanen(SP/SL)

Dog people. The most synergistic theme as all the units play a fairly key role to the overall kanen playstyle. These guys rely on buff alpha dogs running around with packs of little mongrel dogs while wise old casterdogs throw poo poo from behind. Currently one of the strongest themes available due to the factions they belonging to providing most of what the kanen theme doesn't already provide.

People to ask about this faction: Lamedevil, Lljkbingo

Tortuns(KF/FS)

Ocean-dwelling turtle people who are supposedly not pirates. These guys play defense and they play it hard, their thematic drawback is that their attacks all cost +1ap but as the trade off they all have high damage, high hp and high defense as well as being able to poo poo out ridiculous amounts of free nora just for playing the game. Strong theme with a huge amount of passive nora gen. These guys are annoying. Really annoying.

Leoss(IS/ST)

Resident catpeople. These guys get stronger the less they have in play, if this sounds stupid it kinda is. Strongest individual champions by a wide margin but if you intend to play lots of them you'd best hope you have some good support spells because you'll end up paying more overall for champs no stronger than what the other guy has. A good balance of offense and defense with some powerful playstyles.

So I signed up last night and sent a join request to the guild as "BeefLeg12"

I should wait until the starter battlegroups are updated? That's a bummer. What if I just buy a BG now - will the cards still work after the update, and I can buy a rune pack or two then and be ok? Other than that, I have very little sense of what I'm doing, what faction I should pick etc...

What is the most popular faction? I'm leaning toward the elves but if everyone plays them then I might grab something else.

Can the good guys fight eachother? Do goons battle eachother, or other guilds? I like the Kanen and Tortuns - do I need to buy both battle decks if I want to create a mixed race like that or do they sell those as battlegroups?

Your best bet is either to pick based on the playstyle descriptions or get in and talk to some goons.

Faction popularity tends to swing based on how far along the expansion is, people tend to settle down into the prot factions after the initial surge or after midterms.

The alignment of the factions has no bearing on anything and goons play each other fairly often. All of the split faction decks are based on the last 3 expansions so if you buy from any of those you'll end up with some of them. As of now there are no split faction starters but who knows what they have planned.

edit: i just checked the pending applications and the only one there was a blank one which means you to confirm your account i think? someone else might know exactly what causes it.

To all noobs to this game: this game is very, very good. It really is a top-notch fantasy turn based strategy game. There is very little luck involved -- most of the game mechanics are deterministic.

The only downside to date was the somehow high cost of entry in dollars. But with it going free to play, there's no reason to not get started. You will probably find yourself spending a few bucks to pick up some needed pieces. It's worth it. Have fun.

We don't know exactly what will be free but we do know a few things.

They are instituting a store mechanic where you can spend your pox gold and get older decks and what not. They also said something about all heroes being in the store as well.

What I'm assuming is that they will make the less popular older decks available to hook people in but all new content will cost money. This isn't necessarily a bad thing since you still get free runes that have some value and with the introduction of gold there will be easier trades going on.

Right now, while starter decks (un-upgradeable, if I remember right, though - you need to pay to unlock full functionality) are free, the vast majority of cards require you to buy booster packs, Magic: The Gathering style. It sounds like you'll be able to earn most cards now through regular play.

Buying stuff will be relegated to convenience purposes, and probably certain specialized cards.

The current setup means that in order to play you have to buy new runes each expansion etc. but otherwise there are no fees. In the new system this will still be the case except as an alternative to buying new stuff with real money you can earn fake money from playing the game which you can also use to buy things.

AlfFan
Jun 19, 2009

Mind if I ask why you have to buy new runes after each expansion? Are they more powerful - would you fall behind in competitiveness if you didnt? I want to buy a starter pack now, but there are a bunch of rune packs that are like 100 or 600 points that are named after expansions like Marjara and 'Nora Surge' or something like that. Are they faction specific, or do all expansions add cards for all factions? Is that why trading is necessary, because you'll likely end up with a bunch of stuff you don't need?

Captain Farce
Jun 24, 2004
i think NOT!

I suppose you don't have to buy each expansion but it becomes harder to keep up the longer you don't as people start to figure out new combos with the new runes and yeah all rune packs contain a random selection of runes from that expansion for all factions.

Dude you haven't even played pox in what, like three months?

We are coming into an expansion meaning that the game will double or triple in popularity for about a month, but after the last one the numbers stayed way stronger than they had been for previous expansion lulls.

In addition to the F2P thing, Soctopi has been running free 8-man tournaments for relatively valuable exos. I know several goons have gotten exos this way.

Also 2v2 is the poo poo, way more fun than 1v1. Its also pretty easy if you group up with someone and have a discernible theme.

Cool, I'd be appreciative if someone could do a write up of the process so it's not a long drawn out affair for me and probably a lot of other old timers lured by the prospect of F2P.

Today they briefly prievewed "Theme Starters", for example a Skeezick Starter deck, a Skeleton Starter deck, etc. They took them down because they decided they weren't ready to preview them yet, but I think it's a great idea. A way to quickly jump into a theme and get all the auto-include runes would be a great way to get people into the game. In any case they said it was something they were still developing and might have available after this next expansion.

I missed that, but it does sound really cool. I pretty much run themes exclusively, and I think they're a lot more fun than using meta patchwork battle groups.

Also, props to Artifice for making this new thread.

We currently have two pending applications, a blank one I'm going to turn down and Bazzyllian. If these are you, claim them please. Also if you are the blank one you have to authenticate your account and apply again so we can actually see your name and whatnot.

Whoops sorry, Baz is me!

What are the chances though that you are going to have to play a million games in order to get anything resembling a reasonable amount of gold to spend?

Accepted you. We have a steam group that people use to talk occasionally, but normally we just chat with people in game using the Guild tab. But no, no IRC at this juncture.

Unfortunately rather high, but we won't know for another 11 days or so. As soon as we have an idea I'm sure we will update the thread.

EDIT: Still have a pending app for Cretj, so if thats you speak up.
