quote:Coby Electronics had revealed their updated Kyros tablet lineup on their webpage [...] Despite the decent specifications, none of these tablets can be easily recommended.
Interest will only by dampened by Coby's attitude of dismissal and ignorance towards compliance with the GPL license in multiple products, and continuing in the illegal distribution of violating products in the American market. Rooting Android 2.3 on an unknown platform may turn out to be difficult, as Google has patched various exploits that allowed for the devices to be rooted, leaving it up to the community to create viable alternatives.
Pre-orders are available on Amazon show availability for 4 of the 5 models (found so far) for March 15, with specifications on the Coby webpage, as follows:
MID7025 (7" 800x480 resistive): $172.99
MID7026 (7" 800x600 resistive): $172.99
MID8025 (8" 800x600 resistive): $190.99
MID1025 (10.1" 1024x600" capacitive) $259.99
Of note are the variants with resolutions of 800x600, which is not a standard Android resolution and is known to cause some applications to fail, and as a result are not recommended except as dedicated ebook readers. However, the 7025 and 1025 models could turn out to be viable alternatives.
Equivalent Samsung S5PV210 devices from Shenzhen have not found profound success due to sub-par firmware implementations. In addition, there has not been any stable Android 2.3 devices on the market as of now. As a company that is known to rebrand shanzhai products, we cannot be confident of Coby's capabilities to supply viable Android implementations. These products will likely not be Google certified to use Android market applications such as Gmail and the Android market. Coby does supply appslib, which is rather insufficient.

quote:Augen HD Tablet PC Powered by Google Android V2.1 only $90
The device being advertised is an Augen Gentouch78. After seeing a short run of popularity, it was abandoned by much of the community in protest of Augen's refusal to comply with the GPL in releasing source code as required by law, the low-quality of the device itself, and also citing incompetent Augen customer support. Since its initial launch almost a year ago, the Gentouch78 has silently gone through at least one hardware revision without any sort of press release from Augen, adding a g-sensor and changing the loathed 2.5mm headphone jack to a more sensible 3.5mm one. It is unclear which revision of the device is being sold at this sale. However, this may be a little better than buying an unbranded device.
Compared to the Craig CMP738a also recently on sale at CVS for $80 in stores, the Gentouch is not clearly a better choice despite the more powerful and efficient processing unit. The original Gentouch was one of the earliest implementations of the Telechips TCC8902, and was never a very good device in terms of software or hardware. This might have improved with the newer version. Those of you who are still interested in this deal need to consult 1saleaday for more details regarding this.

In San Jose they charge $70 for sub-10; I used to use them, but switched to AT&T when they started dropping the connection for minutes at a time every half hour or so.

When I had Comcast the speed was pretty good, the problem was it would just stop sending data sometimes.
I'd be browsing the web, and suddenly be unable to connect to anything. As far as the cable modem was concerned, the outside world had stopped existing.
This state would last for 4-5 minutes, which isn't so bad for one-off things, except it would happen almost twice an hour.
AT&T is slow, but the connection seems much more reliable.

getting the laugh factory back on track
quote:Deciding on Xoom vs iPad 2
I went to Best Buy today and played with the Xoom for about 20 minutes. I was very impressed. Right after I used the iPad at BB and iOS feels so plain in comparison.
I loved the tabbed browser on the Xoom. My only big complaint about the Xoom was rotating it. On average it took 7-10 seconds if it would rotate at all. I read this was a common complaint but I would like to know if it's a software or hardware issue. If it's software I know it will be fixed. But if Moto installed some garbage sensor in there then it's got me worried.
I'm still on the fence. I currently own an iPhone so I know the deal with Apple and restrictions which is where I like the idea of Android. Things like Garage Band and iMovie don't interest me, my main interest is browsing and some general apps like Weather and some simple board games like Words with Friends. I read FireFox 4 is coming to Android which is huge for me, I love it on my PC.
I saw Sams Club has the WiFi only Xoom for $540. That makes the Xoom very appealing. But I just have to wonder if Android will continue their success now that Verizon has the iPhone.
I would like to hear from actual Xoom owners and their experience.
I want to spend eight hundred dollars to play board games
quote:I think there are a lot of problems with the XOOM but 90% of them are fixed with software updates which will probably happen within a month. The problem I see with the XOOM is the price but looking at some of these deals like at Sam's Club then that issue might resolve itself very soon.
I would personally get a XOOM
The Xoom is a piece of poo poo, but maybe within a month Motorola will (out of the goodness of their hearts) fix a few of the dozens of glaring problems
quote:The xoom is the way to go if your patient. Its very powerful and fast but there are bugs that need to be worked out which is expected. I like the freedom of the OS and being able to hookup HDMI to TV. I had the ipad sold it to get this beast of a machine. But people have to be patient.

This morning in "things dumb people need to read a finance article about to understand"
quote:The evidence mounts: we are headed for a monumental glut of tablet PCs.
Spurred by the early success of the Apple (AAPL) iPad, almost every PC, mobile phone and consumer electronics company has decided to just into the tablet market. And the result is almost surely going to be a huge glut of the things later this, with intense pressure on pricing and an inevitable shakeout.
J.P. Morgan analyst Rod Hall notes in a research report this morning that Apple and other tablet “makers/hopefuls” plan to build 81 million tablets in 2011. That would be fine, except for the fact that he sees actual tablet demand at 47.9 million units. “While it is nearly impossible to both predict tablet build and demand a full year in advance, we believe the significant difference between build plans and forecasts is reason for concern,” he writes.
Compounding the issue, he says it is “difficult to believe that many consumers will opt to go for tablets other than the iPad 2 this year.” He notes that Apple’s tablet “has strong momentum,” as well as a “material price/cost advantage” over most competitive products.
In particular, Hall sees trouble in this situation for both Motorola Mobility (MMI) and Research In Motion (RIMM).
For Motorola Mobility, he is currently forecasting 2.4 million tablet shipments for 2011, or about 7% of his projected 71 cents a share in profits for the quarter. “While we suspect MMI has been cautious in its plans for the XOOM and other tablets, we find it difficult to believe that the company won’t find itself with tablet inventory issues at some point in 2011,” he writes.
As for RIMM, Hall sees the company shipping 3.1 million Playbook tablets in the February 2012 fiscal year, accounting for just 1.8% of its EPS forecast for the year of $7.19 a share.
Hall is not the first person to point out the looming glut in tablets; as I pointed out in a blog post last month, the tech newsletter writer Fred Hickey made the same point in a recent edition of his publication. And Citigroup recently reduced its rating on Nvidia (NVDA) shares based on the potential for an over-supply of tablets and related chips later this year.
That leaves investors in a tablet conundrum. They want to play the trend – but the expanded competition in both tablets and the chips that power them threaten almost every player other than Apple. And meanwhile, the possibility of a glut – and the price pressures that will inevitably follow – seems likely to aggravate the pressure tablets already are already creating for the mainstream PC sector and key suppliers like Intel, Microsoft and the disk-drive makers. If there are winners here long-term beyond Apple – and perhaps Google, if Android-based tablets can get some traction – they are not especially obvious.
This is the investor version of "but I hate iTunes!"
