WOAH! So you can buy OBD II to usb adapter, the only thing left to do is write a driver, so it's effectively universal across all cars. Boom, instant replacement for the scan tool. Seriously I got the sudden urge to go out, get an ipad and mac mini and build this thing ... but a quick search says it's already been built  USB -> ODB II has to be a more or less stock part. Seriously, what's the competition on the PC?
