The basic classes level up really quickly, so you should be able to catch up pretty quickly. I'm surprised you didn't want to at least try them out, though, since nobody shuts up about how cool they are on that island.

Cool, where can I find one of those?

Pretty sure I got mine from the lucky match card game.

I think I hated the Egypt island more than Greenthumb. So much backtracking between the town and palace, and then having to go back to present time and fetch the archaeologist. And the queen and angry dude are boring as hell.

Is it me or are there a lot more puff-puff references in this game than in previous ones? I've gotten puff-puff from foreigners with strange accents, puff-puff behind buildings. A stranger just offered me free puff-puff under the docks... at this rate this is going to be the first DQ hero with Chlamydia.

Anyone get this on PC?

How is the performance?

I haven't had any crashes in 25 hours. I've been able to play at 2160p / 60 fps on my 1070 by turning shadows and a couple of the shaders to medium. Seems like a great port so far from my end. Ansel is actually really cool too. Makes me wish I'd waited for FFXV on PC.

I feel kinda bad about saying it, but I've actually been doing almost all of my fighting in this game with full party autobattle. It's something I thought about a lot while chugging through VII since I was mostly entering the same commands over and over outside of boss/story battles in that game.

I figured I would tag back in if the fights went poorly, but so far I've only been stepping in to target special enemies like metal slimes or for bosses. The fight length in this game is perfect for checking Twitter or smoking.

Overall I think I like this and 8 more than 7 and 9, but I do miss the class system. Way better than preset equipment / spells IMO. Plus it's fun seeing all the different characters in cosplay for each job. Also, man, I just got through the medal academy and between the new mini medal upgrades, magic door loot and unlimited pearls I feel like I just hit the turbo boost. I was kinda bummed when I found out you can do extra horse races in Gallopolis and get knight armor for the hero, though. It's the best look for him yet but I've already got better armor.

He did it for the orphans which is good, because he probably created a lot of them

I think part of why I'm enjoying this is I'm doing all the things I never do in other games because I'm worried about spending my time efficiently, like talking to all the NPCs or checking every corner for secrets.

Even though the side content isn't that special, the pace of the story is so slow and steady and they reward you so consistently for taking your time and exploring the environment that I've been able to turn my brain off for once and get sucked into the game.

This seems like it'd be the perfect retirement RPG.

So, early in Act 2 I've gotten Rab back and done the Sylvando events at Phnom Nan, and now we're supposed to meet in Puerto Valor. Except... I can't figure out how to get there. Hendrink tells me to go north and east, but that puts me back at the Costa Valor roadblock. The guy there says to go to the Champs Sauvage and come around the long way, but I've been wandering around there for 45 minutes and can't find any alternate path to the other end of Costa Valor.

I can't decide if I'm an idiot or this is super, super confusing.

IIRC you can bypass the blocked path if you go through a tunnel down by the beach, and then you just enter the town the normal way.

"Rab says a prayer to the heavens and opens those pearly gates!" somehow sounds dirtier than the actual double entendres in this game.

Postgame stuff: It's pretty hosed up that you can wish to get married or to have Serena get a haircut(both things that don't need magical wish powers to accomplish), but there isn't an option to make Veronica an adult again.

It would be funny if the rest of your party interrupted you if you picked the selfish wishes. We went to another dimension and Jade died and got resurrected twice so I could get that porno mag.

Like honestly even if you don't like Act 3 thematically or storywise (I think it's fine), I'm not sure how you could be angry about all the content and the strange, interesting way the "postgame" contributes to the story and character development. It feels like something very unique from a franchise that's often criticized for being formulaic or "safe".

Well, you barely see any new areas or enemies. You go through some areas you've already been through two or three times before with all the chests popped, and then you go through some reused dungeon maps and fight the big boss.

It's a great postgame. The new events and postgame equipment are all cool. But I don't think it stacks up anywhere close to the other two acts as a for real "act 3".

XI is a long game, but it feels like people really overstate the length of DQ games. Like, I played and enjoyed DQ7 3DS and it took me 70-80 hours which don't get me wrong is a long arse game, but when I see people talk about its length they're throwing out numbers like 120 hours and I'm just like

Might be for the original which IIRC was more ambiguous about who you needed to go to next to trigger the next event (I wouldn't know because I gave up on DQ7PSX a couple hours into the starter island when I was a kid, lol).
