A plane I was watching on that site http://www.flightradar24.com/ just vanished heading directly for Libya. I don't think it was downed or anything. I just thought it was loving weird. It wasn't a smaller plane either. Syr1119 is heading there too. This is totally fascinating.

cioxx posted:What makes you say that? Why would CIA bet on a losing horse? They probably wouldn't support Gaddafi, but that wouldn't mean they would support anyone trying to topple him. The CIA has a history of doing all that it can to build governments that are in step with the US economy and government. There is nothing to suggest that the downfall of Gaddafi will bring in a government that is more sympathetic to the US. Chade Johnson posted:Those who have predicted the fall of the Islamic Republic have been proven wrong time and time again. Iran has gained a lot from the invasion of Iraq, and stands to gain even more with the fall of US client states throughout the region. A year ago, no one would have guess that the governments of Tunis or Egypt would fall. Just because a lot of people have incorrectly predicted the fall of the government in Iran, doesn't mean it can't happen now. I agree that Iran gained a lot though the invasion of Iraq. The biggest client state falling that would give power to Iran is actually Israel. The complete fall of Libya and Gaddafi will actually encourage the people of Iran to rise up against the leadership of Iran. The fall of Tunis and Egypt has already emboldened a lot of Iranians. Even though they are not Arabs, they are inspired by the courage of other Islamic nations.

Is there a scale of crazy for each of Gaddafi's children? I know one of the sons is full on fuckshit crazy and the other a smug over-educated git but I don't know to what extent. That Flightradar thing is addictive. I wish it was more reliable though. Meanwhile... The BBC posted:Word emerging now of a possible replacement for Col Gaddafi if indeed the Friday factor works against the hard-pressed Libyan leader and he is forced out. Al-Jazeera TV says talks are taking place between "personalities from eastern and western Libya to form a body to govern the country". - the Friday Factor is a reference to the symbolic importance that day now has after the Tunisian and Egyptian presidents were deposed on that day.

Just a heads-up: when a plane looks like it's making circles, usually that means it's in a holding pattern until it's turn in the queue to land. Also, disappearing from view doesn't mean anything necessarily; it could have been cleared to land or taken off the website for one reason or another. Keep in mind too, air traffic controllers have the right to,and often divert planes to other airports for reasons ranging from "too many birds/traffic" to "holy gently caress there are people waiting to shoot you down". I'm betting that there may be an issue in the tower or on the Tarmac preventing the planes from landing safely.

Settepotet posted:Yeah, something is not right... 913 just vanished.. This is probably just because the ADS-B that flightradar relies on uses VHF, so it's sort-of line-of-sight. That means there's a blind spot depending on distance from the station and height. Under perfect conditions the range at 36,000ft is 250 miles or so, and this decreases with height. Malta to Tripoli is about 220 miles, so if the ADS-B receiver is on Malta, it'll drop off as the aircraft descends.
