Looks like from press reports that Zawiya is encircled by pro-Gaddafi forces, and tweets and rumors seem to suggest pro-Gaddafi forces en route to Misrata from Sirt. I wouldn't be surprised if the Gaddafi regime expends tons of last-ditch resources in attempts to retake these cities, since re-occupying them could make an example of the opposition and also perhaps give them some leverage over the East in their warped reality. The loss of these cities so far seems to have embarrassed the regime on an almost personal level.

Multiple sources are now suggesting Gaddafi loyalists have retaken the town of Zlitan, and other sources are suggesting that the forces en route to Misrata have halted their advance. Al Manara is also running an unverified report of a battalion commander outside Zawiya being fragged by his own soldier. Also posted video of an apparent revolutionary council in Al Kufra calling Gaddafi's son the "sword of Satan" and explaining how the regime attempted to bribe the city's residents with a planeload of cash and weapons, which they distributed among the banks and the revolutionaries, respectively: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sa1Ryu7Fec&feature=player_embedded

It looks like within the past 24 hours Gaddafi has made a concerted attempt at punishing the opposition, with failed assaults of Zawiya and Misrata, and an attempt to bomb ammunition depots in the east that also evidently failed (due to incompetence or sabotage). Gaddafi must really hate the opposition radio in Misrata, since it has been the target of attacks at least 2 or 3 times in the past few days. Unconfirmed reports also suggest that opposition forces in Zawiya have branched out and overrun a Gaddafi checkpoint in Jeddain. Rumors are also that the feared Khamis Brigade was behind the assault on Zawiya earlier, but this can't be confirmed. Khaweldi's security brigade is allegedly positioned in Sorman (pop. 36,000), giving it fast access to either Zawiya or Ghadames. I've found this this twitter account to be generally pretty timely and fairly accurate: http://twitter.com/iyad_elbaghdadi Edit: Also reports circulating that Gaddafi is employing his foreign intelligence chief to open a dialog with the eastern rebels, and that a mission has been sent to Benghazi. Unconfirmed quotes from Gaddafi's deputy foreign minister suggest that this is some sort of last chance for the rebels to negotiate.

NY Times reporting that Gaddafi's special forces have retaken the oil refinery at Ras Lunafa, and Feb17voices reporting that Gaddafi loyalists have shot civilians in Misrata. Would not be surprised if we saw the regime undertaking a last-ditch offensive in the coming couple of days, especially following rumors of discord and disagreement in the regime's upper echelons.

Looks like within the past 24 hours Gaddafi has had three brigadiers and an air force pilot defect, and AFP is echoing rebel reports that he sacked his intelligence chief and replaced him with a bodyguard. If defections and staff shuffling continues at this rate then I can't see how the regime can last even another 10 days.

BBC reporting that reporters have been sequestered at the Rixos in Tripoli today and forbidden from filming from upper floors. A red carpet has also been rolled out in expectation of something, presumably a Gaddafi visit. This following the carnage in Zawiya today leads me to suspect a possible announcement by the regime that they have retaken the city. Also sounding the AQIM missile alarm theory are anonymous members of Mali's security forces -- an even closer Gaddafi ally. It will be interesting to see how regimes financed and supported by Gaddafi will fare in the absence of his support. The Eritreans I work with, for instance, are hoping for destabilization of the Asmara government, but we'll see.

IIRC there were some extrajudicial executions of black pro-Gaddafi combatants early on in the East, before any real rebel cohesion, but they were pretty much nipped in the bud and treatment going forward was relatively fair and even handed toward all pro-Gaddafi POWs. Certainly those atrocities were a blight on the rebel movement, but they weren't representative of the overall movement and self-policing seems to have stopped them.
