Serious question: in the event that Iraqi Kurdistan really did declare independence, what would a Kurdish state look like? Would the region operate more or less the same as it always has?

I think most people on the planet are going to react to the news in some variation of, "yeah, that is pretty sensible, as I'm not really a fan of genocide". It is just perplexing because it was an obvious way to score domestic political points, to look like a badass leader, but Obama took like a couple weeks to form a committee to kind of consider the option of maybe doing...fuckittroops. Stopping genocide is like such a hilariously one sided issue it is insane.

Putting troops in Iraq under pretty much any other capacity at this point is pretty much political suicide. Obama's probably riding high on the bi-partisan support right now.

Long story short, Chechnya is basically what happens when Islamic extremism goes Russian. Chechnya and Russia have fought two wars with each other within the last two decades and it pretty much wrecked everything the Chechnyan's had. Needless to say they don't get along. Russia's made no secret about it's interest in Syria so maybe this is their way of getting a few potshots in at the big guy.

To tie it to your second question, Turkey isn't exactly talking out it's rear end when it says the YPG has links to the PKK. There are quite a few Turkish Kurds and Kurdish PKK members who have gone to Syria and are fighting with the YPG. Now if Turkey/Erdogan was smart they'd encourage this and be happy that the "radical PKK terrorists" are leaving Turkey for Syria, while continuing the peace process with the PKK. (Instead Erdogan decided to abandon the peace process and risk restarting the Turkish-PKK Civil War.:downsgun:)

I remember when Kobani was getting started a couple of videos came out showing a bunch of Turkish Kurds crossing the border to help with the fight. It was kind of erie honestly, like it was basically a dozen or so dudes in plain clothes with AK-47's and poo poo, just marching at night and chanting songs like they were headed to some kind of football game.
