hey whats up

So I got a ticket from NYC to Bangkok in the middle of January for $580. Pretty good deal I think, every day surrounding my departure was $780. Unsure about my future plans, I've been looking into a return ticket around the time my visa expires (middle of March). Kayak has found about what I was expecting, $650 on the same carrier, but logging onto China Eastern's website (the carrier Kayak found, the one I came here on), they're quoting 2,480 Yuan just about any day of the week, which comes out to $393. So, what's the racket? $300 in taxes and fees? Do I dare to dream of coming home not penniless?

Check the layover in China for China Eastern, sometimes it can be overnight and/or above the amount of hours (generaly 24 but can change depending on country/city/type of transit visa you are on) you would want to do. China Eastern I've had a lot of issues with with clients of mine in the past but a lot of people just love the price so your mileage may vary.

Big thing is if you are a citizen of the USA you will need to read up exactly what constitutes transiting in China for you and make sure you aren't overstaying on an overnight transit visa. As it is if you are overnight you'll probably want a hotel so if you leave the airport you'll need to pay possibly hundreds to get an entry visa into china. Just watch out.

Seems they're running this fare just about every day, and there are two options (strangely for the same price): a 4 1/2 hour layover, and a 13 1/2. Looks like the flight with the shorter layover leaves Bangkok at about 2AM local time, so maybe that's the equalizer. I used China Eastern to get here, the layover in Shanghai wasn't too long, and there wasn't anything to do with customs besides standing in a line and getting a stamp.

Incidentally, I am a US citizen, and on China Eastern's website, they don't have an option for the US under the "select your region" drop-down. I've checked under Europe and Australia, as the Canada site seems to be down, and haven't noticed a difference between the two. The lack of a US option seems a bit weird, though.
