I WANT A PONY TOO

There seems to be a significant number of us here; enough to justify having a place to discuss are own little problems?

Namely, where is everyone shooting at? I am in the 48185/48184 area, and there are a couple of indoor ranges, but nothing in the way of outdoor...and I really want to actually get some practice shooting rifle. Someplace that does some kind of competition shooting would be cool, too.

I know Island Lakes is there, but they've gotten pissy with me about Wolf ammo before. Also, there are the various sport clubs around here, but they seem vaguely fuddish, and I don't want to drop $200 to join a place I can't stand.

Closest to you is probably the Wayne County Coon Hunters Club. http://raccoonhunters.org/ I've never been there, but I hear good things about their IDPA matches. And honestly, they have the coolest logo maybe ever.

I am a member of Blue Water, and I love that range more and more every time I go there. A bit of a hike for you though.

Edit: I guess this is their new site http://sites.google.com/site/waynec...oonhunters/home

Lieutenant Michigoon, reporting for duty!

How wrong is it that I have semi-seriously considered getting a rifle short enough to be considered a pistol in Michigan and registering it as such so that I can CCW it?

Detroit Michigoon checking in. 'Sup IR35, how's federal law enforcement today?

Edit: I shoot up at Bald Mountain, which is a hell of a hike for you. I guess my only advice for you is to stay out of The Firing Line, 'cause they's a bunch of assholes in there.

Last weekend I got up to Firing Line in Livonia and it's a very nice place. Believe prices were $10 for 30 minutes and $15 for 60. Nice indoor range. Pistols and rimfires only though.

The coolest thing about this range, in my opinion, is that they let you deduct I think two rentals from the purchase price of a new gun.

I tend to go to Top Gun in Taylor. It's a nice place, no fudd and the people are pretty decent.

Stay away from Wolverine in Brownstown. Bullet holes in the wall. And ceiling. And floor. and Gun cases. Also, the firing range is pretty messed up.
I went there for my CPL Training. I did not feel safe. It felt like the type of place that if you said the wrong thing you wouldn't be found ever again.

I always hear of Top Gun. How is it as far as a store?

I really don't like the Firing Line. There are a few nice employees there, but the rest tend to be asses. It is literally just a few minutes from my house though so I often get stuck shooting there.

If I'm in the area, or otherwise have a chance, I usually shoot at The Firearm Exchange in Livonia (Schoolcraft and Middlebelt). They don't have an FFL, so no firearms purchases, but carry a decent amount of accessories. They have a few less bays in the range, but I think it is nicer, plus they allow centerfire rifles. The employees have also always been really cool to me.

Souf central UP reporting.

I shoot at Great Lakes Sports and Rec. $65 a year with plenty of facilities AND its >10 minutes on the road? Totally awesome. It gets pretty fuddy around deer season, but the rest of the year that range is mine. Its a very rare occasion when I have to share the range with anyone.

Also IR35, the first thing I plan on doing once I put together an AR pistol is carry it for a day

Its actually down the first left past Menards. Down the road by the dump.

Our only gun store is downtown, next door to our suplus shop, Supply Sargent.

Ive got a buddy in Iron Mountain who has a Garand and he and I go shoot down at the Merriman club once or twice during the summer. Ill have to shoot you a PM or something the next time we go out. Youll have to do the same if youre ever in my area.

Yeah, I don't have much time these days. I was going to go Monday to sight in my AR optics, but then we got a foot of snow. The last time I actually shot was to qualify for my job, and that was in a basement range in the office in downtown Detroit. I will go to the Yooper shoot, as I am nagging my boss every week about it, mentioning that it's tradition, I've known about it for months, and already reserved a hotel.

Sup downriver goon. Wyandotte here.

The only reason I go to wolverine is because they don't force me to buy their rifle ammo like Top Gun does. I'm also skeptical of their ventilation system, though I've never had that funny plumbus taste, and I have no real evidence to back it up.. Also, it is the only place in the area where I can shoot bimetal jacket M1 Ball out of my Garand, as I got special permission from the owner to do so. I took my CPL class at the Wyandotte Police Station from 2 RRT members.

I long for an outdoor range that isn't fuddy. I went to one down I-94 and not only did nobody in the gun-check room know what an ar-15 is, but they made me load one round at a time. In a Garand. Yeah.

Top Gun, as a store is decent. They're selection of shot guns is staggering, and they seem to have a decent variety of newer rifles/carbines. Their accessories like holsters and gun cases are kind of high. I haven't bought any magazines from them. They do have a box of "random high capacity magazines" though.

They have one of those $1200 Thompsons on the wall, and atleast 2 PS90s. They're rental guns are constantly dirty as hell. I'm more than half convinced that the people who work there(there are usually around 8 of them for some reason) use the "new" guns as their private rentals which is shady as hell. They know what they're talking about, i will give them that.

They have the best prices i have ever seen. They beat Cabelas AND gander mountain on ordering guns. I bought my FN2000 from them, $300 cheaper than i could find anywhere else. They beat the price of my S&W 620 by $70 cheaper than Gander Mountain.

VSEPR,
I didn't know that about Wolverine. I will definently have to check that out, as i have a couple of rifles that i'd love to shoot but just don't want to pay range prices for rifle ammo.

Stormy, can you do face to face sales for SoMi Arms in the Detroit area? When I picked up my mosin from G43 I hiked out to his neck of the woods.

I have not been to too many places yet, mostly a few indoor rental ranges. Although I did finally make it up to Bald Mountain and while their 6 loaded rounds and 3 second wait between shots were annoying, I don't think I want to go back to shooting indoors.

Ahh drat. Well, the drive wasn't that bad.

A somewhat relevant question, does a Michigan CCW allow you to purchase a pistol without having to go get a permit beforehand?

In the Lansing area, there's the new MSU indoor range on campus. 22LR, 50 ft. Rents Ruger Mk 3s as well as 22LR rifles (archery, also). Friendly staff and RSOs, nice facility. Not open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays. No rapid fire. About what you'd expect for a new sporting facility on a Big10 school's campus.

In my limited experience, Total Firearms' pistol range in Holt is OK, also. They have a decent selection of pistols to rent.

Total Firearms is sweet if you want to shoot pistols indoors or rent guns. Otherwise the Rose Lake shooting range is free, and has 25, 50, & 100 yard ranges, along with archery and skeet/trap ranges.

I rented their CZ 75 SP-01 and it wasn't so good. Out of 100 bullets, 1 failure to feed, 1 failure to eject, and the slide stop rarely engaged. Plus, it would release when I dropped the magazine or moved the gun too quickly.

Was wondering if anyone had come across this before. Whenever getting a pistol purchase permit in my town, the city police always make me wait a day before they'll finalize it. They say I have to wait on the background check. The county, however, does them same day (and at half the cost, I might add). I know a background check doesn't take a loving day, though.

Does Charlotte, MI just hate guns, or is this common?

Alpena has a 600-yard range... but that's not even close to central lower. Oscoda might have a long range. Seems like most towns with abandoned military bases have a decent place to shoot.

In other news, for the very first time, I purchased a long gun by way of a handgun permit.

^^^ It depends on location and how lazy and/or distrustful they are. Most places I've lived it was instant, but one place would make you get an appointment to apply for the permit, and then you'd have to make an appointment to come pick it up a few days later, and then you'd have to make an appointment to take the gun back in with the paperwork (back in the day, obviously). It could take a couple weeks to do an hour's worth of work.

I figured as much. The first time I applied for one the lady asked me "What's with all the people buying guns lately." I dunno, let me ask my militia buddies. We're probably planning something. Ah well, she's gotten progressively nicer the past few times.

Of all the cities and towns in MI, I would have thought that Chartucky Charlotte wouldn't even be on the list of locales that makes you wait for a purchase permit. I know Ingham county doesn't make me wait for mine.

Or maybe it's because their background check system is hilariously old.
