It seems that if I were to purchase a paratrooper Calico M-100 I would have to register it as a pistol since its folded length is less than 30 inches. Is this something that would happen at my FFL or would I have to make the seller do something?

If it's a private sale in person, the seller fills out the registration card. If you have it shipped to your FFL, the FFL fills out the card as the seller and you as the buyer.

Its a hella great place. Good offbeat places to go shooting (look for hoosier valley). Disc golf is really awesome there too.

NMC is a good college if youre going into culinary, my best friends brother went there, cooked with Mario Bitali (who also owns a place up in the leelanau peninsula) and is head chef now at some place in Elk Rapids.

I apologize for my long absence in TFR, bought a house in March, have been working on it every night/weekend so my forums time has been drastically reduced. I've made a post in the DIY forum if you want to check that out.

As little as I have been posting, I had been shooting even less. Went last weekend for the first time in roughly a year and it got me right back into the swing of things. I was pleasantly surprised that my shot placement with my pistols is almost just as good as when I stopped shooting regularly. Feels good to be back!

Bedbouncer : the pit that you shoot at is off of M95, correct? I live in Dickinson county myself and I know Gray Stormy is/was an Esky man. Maybe we should get a mini goon yoop shoot before the snow falls in October.

Oh, and I have PM now if anyone wants to get a hold of me.

Edit: Called the Florence WI sheriff's department to ask them when WI would have it's poo poo together about reciprocity between MI and WI. He said it won't be until November when they decide that. Stinks for me because I live 5 minutes off of the border and am regularly travelling over the border. Really stinks when going to the Gun Barn in Iron River and my buddies and I have to get out and put our pistols in the trunk.

Edit2: Apparently Gray Stormy's heart decided to try to murder him, my bad!

Forgive me if I'm not clear, but parts of Michigan gun law are

If I have a rifle that is considered by Michigan to be a pistol due to a folding stock, can I replace the folding stock with a fixed one which would bring it into the category of a Michigan rifle? To be clear, it is federally a rifle with the folding stock.

If I understand correctly (and maybe I don't), once something is registered as a pistol, there's no way to "de-register" it.

That I know of.

I don't care so much about it being registered, I'd just rather have a fixed stock rather than the folder.

You can legally put a fixed stock on it. You can also get pistols off the registry, I'm pretty sure all it takes is a letter to the MAP.

Yes, that's the one. I see from your DIY post where you live, I live in the tiny village west of you, the one across from the roadside waterfall.

My first house was in Iron Mountain, corner of Kimberly and Wells, built in 1897, so I went through many of the same tasks: removing pine trees, rewiring, rebuilding, floor tile.

Best story, I'll keep it short: formal dining room had a 1x2' hole in the hardwood maple floor patched with cheap pine boards. Not sure why, for a coal shute or a whale oil tank or whatever the hell our ancestors drilled through dining room floors for. No way to find replacement maple, or make it look good if I could. Ended up buying a slightly larger brushed stainless steel plaque to put over it, and had it professionally engraved with:

The Sanderson House
1897
<phrase in latin>

"Sanderson" was the name of the mining dude who originally built the house in 1897. And the phrase in latin, which I can't recall now, translated to "It was already like this when I found it". I thought that phrase summed up my renovation experiences.

I promised my wife the next house would be turn-key, so I haven't done much renovating in years, but it was rewarding when I did. My favorite was wiring.

Any Yooper goon can email me at my account name AT charter.net, if you want to set up a shoot or discuss renovating houses. I don't check that particular email often, so replies may take time.

Cool; from the handul of people I've talked to who've been through the school there, it's a really good experience. I kind of wish I lived closer, and that they let you audit classes.

Have you been to the little gun shop up on 72 just east of 31 yet? They're a stocking SIG dealer and they have a decent selection despite their small floor plan.

If you feel like driving, there are tons of gun shops around. Mackinac Outfitters in Mackinac City (which is a Bass Pro Shop), Jay's Sporting Goods in Gaylord (which has a huge selection of new and used guns plus reloading equipment, fishing/camping/hiking gear. you name it). If you drive over to Alpena, there's Bob's Gun Shop which is upper-class fudd, if you can imagine. Lots of new and used guns of all kinds, and the guy used to be a safari outfitter so he's got some serious high-end stuff in there as well. Ray's Gun Shop in the back woods of Hillman is pretty cool as well - if you can find it/enjoy two-tracking.

If you're looking for good deals on used .30-30s though, drive up to Dafter in the U.P. (about 35 miles north of the bridge on Mackinac Trail) and hit up Tony's Gun Shop. The place has been around forever, and they've got guns that were probably traded in in the 1950s. Every time I go there I see at least a couple lever actions for under $200.

Edit: Take pride in your rowboat work. One day you may have to row a federal law enforcement officer out to your ship because the riverside dock is so dilapidated that the boat can't put a ladder down.

Pellet pistols are kind of a murky area in Michigan law. Most people interpret the law as "Anybody can buy a BB pistol but a pellet pistol is a dangerous weapon so you have to get a pistol permit for it." As a result, not a lot of places in Michigan sell actual pellet pistols anymore. You'd have to be 21 to buy one, and either have a CCW or the pistol purchase permit. And you'll notice that places like Sportsman's Guide won't ship a pellet pistol to Michigan but they'll ship a BB pistol.

Naw, I'm just going to drop this bit of commiseration here: I have a vintage 1912 model that needs wires. I think they were redone in the 50's, but oh god they are so bad now. So very bad. Got a new line in from the street a couple years back, which gave us a taste of the modern miracle of "grounded" electricity and "breakers" instead of ye olde fuse, but drat is it time to redo the whole place.

Also there's this weird bricked/boarded up probably-room in the corner of the basement with only a small, useless window through the stone - you can't see whats inside. I'm hoping there's like a lost mine entrance or a previous owner's massive cache of old guns and 1940's pornography but I'm pretty sure it'll just turn out to be ex-coal storage or something else lame when we finally get up the gumption to crowbar it open for curiosity's sake.
