Item level progression is 1/floor travelled + bonuses (level orbs, fortune telling, etc.), so besides wanting to beat stages that have level orbs on them while holding the level orbs to get their bonus, there's no real benefit to completing floors unless you want the bonus list stuff. Wait, so it levels up just the same whether you clear the floor or not? Does this apply to all the games?

It's great when I guess correctly and all the hearts pop out. It's nice to know that rushing through Item World doesn't impact the item's stat progression. gravyflood posted:Wait, so it levels up just the same whether you clear the floor or not? Does this apply to all the games? Yes. I can't remember if fortunes are a flat number increase or a % increase, but I'm almost certain it's the former. Level orbs have only been around in D3/D4 and have worked the same way both times. Most people doing Item World runs use a flying unit (Tink, Desco, Mothmen, D3's Asagi Flying Evility, etc.) and put a bunch of boots on them to have them zip through straight to the exit, pulling out the big guns on another character to blow up the Gate Guard first if one exists. Clearing 100 kill maps is boring and awful and hasn't been a requirement to get to the bottom of a legendary item ever. EDIT: Clarification on Gate Guards, they can't be lifted, so even if you could bolt through an item leaps and bounds ahead of your actual average level before the enemies get a single turn, if you can't kill the Gate Guards it's pointless. In addition, I forgot to mention that killing Item Generals/Kings/Gods/Etc. gives you a boost in item level gain. This in combination with there being a Gency as the Bonus Level 0 item on all floors a multiple of 10 means you should at least clear out those floors proper, though if you've got more Gencies than you know what to do with, just killing the elite unit and taking the portal works just as well. Aside from specific game events (D4 has a mystery room where the Item Worlder gives you a Gency), that's the only way to get Gencies. sentrygun fucked around with this message at Sep 13, 2011 around 00:27 |

Okay, from reading this thread, I think I decided to try Disgaea 2. I made it about to the Power Rangers parody in Disgaea 1 before I gave up, and I have to admit, the 999999999 gimmicks and everything just turned me off. I just kind of hate games that feel they need to ramp up the numbers so goddamn high when they could just cut loving 3-4 digits off and scale everything back. Maybe this is just RPG nerdery and how the max things tend to be 255/999/9999 respectively (for computery reasons). Is 2 a good place to jump in? I'm pretty repulsed by most things Anime, but damnit, I love me some SRPG and I've been ignoring the series for too long I think.

Ordeals 4 just laughed and poo poo all over my plans. There's a faster way to do it if you want to use Evil Symbols and Desco. Use 9-4 to level up Desco until she's about level 400. Turn her giant, she can cover the entire field with one attack once she learns her ultimate attack. She learns it at level 100, I think. Make sure you're fuse her with a nekomata; they'll split their exp that way, and a few steps later Nekos are important. Put Volcanus on an Aura Pyramid with her, and Fenrich on the Training Ground with her. After level 400, take her to Ordeal 4 and use that Giant attack to kill all but two of the enemies. Have someone with good reach grab one of the remaining guards and the remaining one will almost definiely kill him instead of attacking Desco. Do this until Fenrich is level 500. After about half an hour you should be able to take care of the board at maximum enemy strength, with surrounding Desco with five people and casting braveheart on her. Feel free to shove two other people in the Training Ground with him. I put Volcanus in the Aura Pyramid so she could max out braveheart, since it doesn't seem to stack in this game. Once you can get Big Bang, do so, and equip a Giant Nekomata fist on him and surround with with Volcanus and Val. Lower Val's HP if you have the Evility that boosts Fenrich's stats when Val's health is low. With the enemy level at 20, you need about 105K Atk to take care of the lot of them with a level 4 Giant Big Bang. There's also a +50% Atk Geoblock if you need it. It's not as efficient as just trashing a 3x3 square of guys, but it works once you get the rhythm of it down. Typing it out, I guess it doesn't seem like it's much faster, but it really only took a couple of hours to make an unstoppable Nekomata and go through quite a few monster tiers, as well as making Fenrich super powerful.

Wow. Just came across a moment that made me turn off the PS3 and completely turned me off from the game, at least for tonight. I'm in the item world, been there for a couple of hours. I'm trying to level people up, earn some money, etc. I enter a mystery room and find a vendor. I buy a couple of things, but before I leave I think I might want something else so I go back to talk to him again. Nope, now he's attack me. And he's stupidly stronger than me. And the game won't let me leave the room. Or use a Mr. Gency exit. The only option is death and losing all of that progress. gently caress that.

They introduced the whole overpowered enemies attacking you in mystery rooms bit in D3, and I have to agree it was a stupid and annoying decision. Wouldn't be so bad - and even kind of funny - if you could gency out, but it's not like you could expect to be completely screwed just from talking to someone.
