I don't dislike (most) of the series, and the horse thing isn't criticism. It's an observation. A few years from now some of you will be rereading the series and notice every time a horse/mule acts shifty and make a mental note that I was right (with a little help from our friend confirmation bias).

And then get a pathetic "glorious" end after that. It's clear where his respect lies imo. The horses are also a huge liability in the glass desert, just as the heavies gain mythic status as draft animals. Tool started off strong and mysterious, by the end of the malazan series I was extremely tired of him. Tool's arc of resurrection & a happy ending for being awesome in MoI was touching. Tool's followup arc in DoD/TCG ending with his 2nd resurrection/2nd happy ending makes me really hope Tool doesn't appear in any future Malazan stories (especially the Karsa trilogy). ....... Tool going t'lan imass for a 3rd time is way too torture porn.

I'm about 1/3 through FoL, and I've had about enough of these boring-rear end Tiste. Bring on the chaos. Thankfully, there's a lot of really great stuff too, like every scene involving Brood and Rake: 'Forgive me, Rake, but strength is not always a virtue. I will raise no monument to you.' I liked the idea of the big battle being shown secondhand through multiple POVs, but I couldn't get down with the toy soldier thing at all. It was kind of interesting that old man Hust was the one "playing" with Wreneck, but the whole idea seemed pretty dumb to me. The endless philosophizing sure gets tiring, but there are some insane info-dumps to make up for these doldrums, especially in the K'rul/Skillen Droe chapters. How many Azathanai are there? FoL introduces several that have never been mentioned before, like the dude who made the Trell and Barghast. And speaking of Skillen Droe, does his name appear anywhere in the BotF? He seems to be one of the baddest asses around. It's pretty clear now that Korya will become Quick Ben somehow or other, and I think there are a lot of clues that point towards Narad becoming Edgewalker. I expected Urusander to get whacked at some point, but definitely wasn't expecting a knife from Renarr. I wonder if Urusander will now "ascend" in some way, or if he's gone for good. If he's well and truly dead, I'm wondering if the Liosan will try to cover it up somehow, or maybe Osserc will now be installed as their ruler.

FoL, Narad I don't think Narad is Edgewalker, we know shadow is older than the Edur. So I expect Edgewalker to also be that. Still he's the first Watch, that's pretty impressive. FoL, guessing I think that Lether is built on the ruins of Omtose Phellack, there are ruins of Jaghut there and an Azath without a Guardian that is dying/dead edit: also buried Sereghal Edit2: it's also where Hood starts his war on death by "freezing" time and the Azath doesn't die until Hood does. But I guess Gothos also freezes the area. But2 the house/hold of death isn't known/present in Lether until the arrival of the Malazans which should coincide with Hoods death. IIRC the area Gothos froze wasn't Lether, it was where the Edur lived. The timing is actually iffy because I seem to recall the Malazans arriving before Hood's death - admittedly the only clue to the actual timing of events from RG and TtH is the presence of Karsa. I don't think even he can be in two places at once. So the arrival of Malazans definitely doesn't coincide with Hood's death.

Someone (Haut?) mentions to Korya that she could possibly live for 12 lifetimes, which seems like a really obvious connection to QB.

I just slogged through Fall of Light, way too much philosophizing, not enough convergence. I was looking forward to a badass battle that would make all the buildup worth it and then it all got told secondhand psychically and I got pretty mad about that. Then I read Dancer's Lament and actually really liked it. ICE avoids his normal pitfalls of writing too many POVs by limiting the action to one city, even if half of the characters are members of the Crimson Guard pre-guard and he still does the whole "who could this character with a different name but all the same traits and weapons/armor of a known character possibly be?" thing. Anyways, I finished it super quick and was way more into it than Fall of Light, which I never thought would be the case. Prazek and Dathenar were cool bros though.

I finally made it to Dust of Dreams. It has been a beautiful journey so far and I'm glad I picked up this saga. Some interactions of this book make me chuckle so hard, the thread is full of them so I just wanna add some spoiler-free one that STILL makes me laugh regularly: one of the Mott Brothers taking a hard glance at a map and even doing the pose and frowning... only to realize his brother is doing exactly the same, getting a good laugh and just walking away with him because they have no clue about this map while Gruntle goes "WTF???"

The start of MT is like "loving hell, a completely new setting and 50 new characters to keepp track of? AGAIN!? WHERE THE gently caress ARE MY MALAZANS ERIKSON!?" and then 300 pages later you're wondering why he didn't shift the focus there sooner. And then the whole thing comes together and you feel real silly for ever doubting the guy.
