Because the last thread was getting pretty long, and the OP hadn't posted since loving June, here's an entire new support thread to help you with your new-found app addiction! You'll stop sleeping, your family will hold interventions, and your friends will wish you went back to meth. Preamble: Many apps (especially games) are starting to abuse in-app-purchases(IAPs) just so that they can sneak in under the "free" category. Many other apps have two versions, a lite(feature-limited or ad-supported) version and a full version. I'll try and note these wherever possible. Some apps (the Best Apps) require jailbreaking. I've mentioned it when applicable, but this isn't the thread to discuss that. You want this thread. For deals and graphs and charts, appshopper is your friend. Reading Stanza - Free - Ebook reader for the masses. Recently got updated to only work with iOS5, and support has been discontinued. If you're still on iOS4 like me, I've made this version to fix all that incompatibility stuff. This is still perfect as-is for iOS5, but if you want active development, see below. Megareader - $1.99 - I really really hate the trend of calling all of the apps "mega" or "super", but this seems to be the app that's replacing Stanza. The devs are adding features to it designed to appease the Stanza refugees. GoodReader - $4.99 - Not just a reader for your comics, it's a reader for EVERYTHING. Plus it can connect and sync to things like Dropbox, WebDav, SFTP, etc. It's literally a one-stop app for anything you'd need to read on your iPad that isn't DRM'd. Comic Zeal - $7.99 - Comic book reader. Comic Flow - Free - Try this one first, I guess. Note taking Notability - $0.99 - This has been getting rave reviews on here and i think the consensus is just buy it okay http://forums.somethingawful.com/sh...0#post405268951 Note Taker - $4.99 - Most of the note taking apps are pretty similar, I think, but this one boasts handwriting resizing so that you fit a lot of words on a little amount of space. Beleshka - $2.99 - Named for the Bulgarian or Hungarian or whatever name for "note" or "words" or "essay" or something, this is goon made and is shown off in this rad youtube video. Unless they changed it, there's no handwriting recognition, though. Notes Plus - $0.99 - This has had some good words said about it, too. Simplenote - Free - Looks pretty bare-bones, but forums user Sarcasmatron claims it's his #1 must-have because of syncing across various iOS devices, laptops, and desktops. QuickOffice Connect - $14.99 - Opens DOC format. It's worth noting here that Google Docs also works passably in your browser and is getting better all the time (and is free of course). UPAD - Free/$4.99 - I really don't know what the difference between all of these are! Drawing Adobe Ideas - $5.99 - Good layout, very few features, extra layers are IAPs( )Sketchbook Pro - Free/$4.99 - Pretty excellent Inspire Pro - $4.99 - Also pretty excellent, you'll have to get a weigh-in from a real artist (someone judge these please) Artrage - $6.99 - If you've used the computer app, you have a good idea of what to expect here. Games Word With Friends - Free(ad-supported)/$2.99 - This is the most popular Scrabble clone for a reason. Supports two player games by passing the iPad around in person and many simultaneously multiplayer games online. SNES A.D. Plus - Free - Requires jailbreaking - An SNES emulator. But for your iPad. Angry Birds - $4.99 - You've heard of this already. You use a giant slingshot to fire some birds at pigs. The birds are angry. This is directed at the pigs for some reason, I think. Osmos - $4.99 - Fluid physics game where you are a cell, and you have to absorb other cells. It's so pretty, and the soundtrack works perfectly with the visuals to create the most chill game you will ever play. Plants Vs. Zombies - $6.99 - I don't know what problems those plants have with zombies, but they also seem quite angry. Zen Bound 2 - $2.99 - A meditative puzzle game of wrapping rope around wooden sculptures. Bring peace to your inner dominatrix. Let's Create! Pottery - $4.99 - That is literally the most explanatory game title I've seen short of Cut the Rope. Flight Control - $4.99 - These kinds of games are good to keep on your iPad because you can hand them to someone with no explanation, and they'll both be able to figure out how to play immediately and decide they want an iPad. Harbor Master - Free/IAPs - Same as above but with boats. Carcassonne - $9.99 - In-person-two-player board game. Price seems a little steep for a device that you told everyone was only for reading ebooks. But who are you kidding, you're in it for the games. Dizzypad - Free/IAPs - Brought to you by the same goon behind Pocket Frogs, this game has both singleplayer and in-person multiplayer modes. Omium - Free - More in-person multiplayer modes. If you can't buy friends, just bring an iPad loaded up with these to a party. 90% of the time, it works every time. Veggie Samurai - $2.99 - Pros: You can slice and dice. Cons: Who wants to slice vegetables? Fruit Ninja - $2.99 - Pros: Fruit rocks. Cons: Just slicing, no dicing. http://forums.somethingawful.com/sh...8#post402469294 Video Air Video - $2.99 - On-the-fly transcoding and streaming of movies on your desktop to your iPad over LAN. For when you just can't get out of bed and walk those ten feet to your computer you goon. Air Play It HD - Free - Same as above but free. Some people like it not as much, because everyone likes Air Video but give it a shot. Netflix - Free with account - I've heard a lot of complaints about this shittiness compared to, for example, the PS3 version, but what are you gonna do. Clarification: Netflix queue management on the iPad isn't as good as the PS3 but movie playback is the same. National film Board of Canada - Free - Works in the US too, you can watch over 1000 films for free. Really good stuff here. For the following players: These apps play AVIs and all the other weird formats you can think of. I've had very mixed results. One of them will play codec #1, but not codec #2. The next one will play that one, but not codec #1 or 3 or 4. GoodPlayer - $2.99 - Universal, constantly improved, tons of features, plays everything you can think of. VLC - Free - Got taken down by Apple, some people still have it, also available on Cydia I think. OPlayer - Free(ad-supported)/$5.99 - This is video player #1 in that example. yxplayer - Free(ad-supported)/$4.99 - Video player #2. RSS Reeder - $4.99 - Some people really like this RSS reader, I think you'll find that all of them have pretty much the same features, it all just comes down to which one you feel more comfortable with. Pulse - Free - I prefer this one. Organizes your feeds in a slightly different way than Reeder. River of News - $3.99 - I haven't tried this one, someone else will have to weigh in on this. Byline - Free - Excellent price, it's a good idea to try this one out before buying anything. Flipboard - Free - Syncs with google reader and jams everything in a purdy magazine format. Pretty cool for the way it combines news (from a huge array of sources, including Economist for free!) and Facebook and/or Twitter. If it didn't waste screen space with retweet notices on some stuff it'd be perfect. News Rack - $4.99 - Yet another option. Zinio - Dunno - This one has some high tech automagic learning capabilities or something I don't even know Desktop Withdrawal Skype - Free - About goddamn time. Splashtop - $1.99 - VNC-like remote desktop viewer. THIS poo poo LETS YOU USE YOUR COMPUTER ON YOUR IPAD so buy it asap. Teamviewer - Free - Free remote desktop viewer. I haven't heard any rave reviews about this like Splashtop, but it's hard to go wrong for the price. Air Sharing - $9.99 - Creates a webserver/network drive on your iPad to easily send files to or from your computer. Totally overshadowed by iFile if you're jailbroken. iFile - $4.00 - Requires jailbreaking - Allows you to access and modify your iPad's filesystem. Also includes a webserver. I used it to delete those default Apple apps that I will never use. Weather WeatherEye - Free - Sun, snow, or rain straight from The Weather Network to your lap. The Weather Channel Max - Free - Also has live and forecast animated radar maps. Weatherbug - Free - It's now free (ads are pretty unobtrusive) and has maps, forecast, and local weather cams. Plus, you can add a bunch of different locations and bounce between them pretty quickly, so it's great for travelling. If anyone knows any good snow report apps, I'd like to add them here. News The Big Picture - $2.99 - The Boston Globe's The Big Picture photo blog from around the world. Updates Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The Daily - Two weeks free - Rupert Murdoch's iPad news subscription experiment. I don't know whether it turned out to be any good or not, but give it a shot. Also see: bbc news, cbc radio, globe & mail, huffington post, ireddit, npr, nytimes, wallstreet journal IM BeejiveIM - $9.99 - supports just about every protocol. Works as a background task with push notifications even. IM+ - Free/$9.99 - Same deal as above. Colloquy - $1.99 - IRC client. Pictures Filterstorm - $3.99 - Fairly full featured image editing suite. FlickStackr - $1.99 - Flickr app. Audio Garage Band - $4.99 - By Apple. Designed for the iPad 2, it's supposed to still work on the iPad 1, just less good. Rock Prodigy - Free - Basically like Guitar Hero, except instead of a plastic guitar, you use your own guitar(even acoustic) and instead of a game, it's a tutor. Includes some free stuff, but is mostly in-app-purchases for the stuff you're interested in. Goon made by Sarcasmatron. Bonus thread on iOS audio production. Recipes Paprika - $4.99- Costs an extra for cloud storage, but other than that is pretty awesome. Goon made, I don't remember the dude's name, but he's been really receptive to feature requests if you do hunt him down.Alternative Browsers iCab - $1.99 - Used to be prefereable to Safari due to proper tab management and some other stuff, but the new Atomic Web - Free/$0.99 - This too, stay tuned for the (alleged) release of that new engine. Edit: New engine probably not actually going to be available to non-Apple devs iSwifter - Free/IAPs - Includes a usable implementation of flash. Opera - Free - I use iCab for the iPad, but Opera totally owns for Android, so this version might be really good, too. Fun fact- most of these browsers allow you to use Google Mobilizer, which can compress pages before they get sent to you if you're on a limited data plan. Also if you have limited data: Data Usage Pro - $1.99 - Keeps very good track of data usage, can set both Wifi and cellular quotas, can warn about usage and see if you're over/under and by how much, etc. (eg: Right now forums user three-phase has a 2 gig plan through Verizon, but is projected to only use 600MB so far.) So, discuss away. I'll add new suggestions and advice for anyone who has any to contribute. Awful is the iPad compatible SA app of the moment I think that probably won't steal all your data ante fucked around with this message at Jul 13, 2012 around 04:21 |

Okay so like many I'm looking at getting an iPad 2 when they launch in the UK in a few weeks but I have a couple of App related questions. 1) I use VLC on my iPhone and like it a lot. I use AirVideo when I'm at home, and VLC when I am away from home. However since VLC got pulled from the App store, I can still use it, but it's never going to see an update. So what video app should I be using for the iPad that will let me play (pretty much) any video type I throw at it? 2) I have been playing a few games on my iPhone, for example Infinity Blade. Is there any way for me to get my save game from the iPhone to the iPad? It uses the same app, so will I be able to just sync my iPhone onto iTunes, then sync my iPad and have this work?

Teamviewer should be in Desktop Withdrawal, it's free, works fantastically and requires no bullshit port forwarding. Also, I'm a big fan of Comiczeal for reading comics, maybe something for the eBook readers section? I haven't tried many others so my opinion can be flawed. ^^I don't think save games work that way, they'd need to add some kind of support for it work like that. I'm not sure in the case of Infinity Blade, but I have a lot of universal games, and saves never synchronize. LPG Giant fucked around with this message at Mar 6, 2011 around 21:31 |

I'm not that bothered about save game synching for the most part. Once I use a specific device for a game I will probably stick with it. It's just for that first switch to the iPad I am thinking of. While we are on the subject though, I'm using Stanza for reading on the iPhone, anyone know if there is any way in stanza or in another reading app to sync bookmarks between devices in ePub documents?

Most of the Facebook apps you'll find are basically the same as Friendly I think. There's a proper app called Friended which gets a bit closer to what I want to see, but it leaves out events which are the main thing I use Facebook for, so edit: regarding its mention in the OP, I should mention that MyPad is the same thing as Friendly, but with a few extra interface doodads laid on top. You're still primarily looking at the mobile site stretched out. Again, not a terrible way to use Facebook, but not perfect. And finally, apps go on sale often so if you're cheap you can use the appshopper.com website or app to get notifications of price changes on apps you've put on your wish list. randyest fucked around with this message at Mar 6, 2011 around 23:06 |

Does Goodreader support cbr/cbz files? Some other app suggestions: Note Taker HD: if you want a digital pen and paper notepad there are a bunch of options out there, I've tried many and this has stayed as my top choice...even with its funky UI and other awkward things. When it comes down to it I'm still the most comfortable with this app. Other apps that some other goons like are Notes Plus and Beleshka. iCab: one of many "desktop" like browsers if Safari is bugging you. There's a bunch out there but I got iCab cause I'm an old Mac user and thought " Cave shooters, Espgaluda II and Dodonpachi Resurrection: technically these are for iPhone, but they play better on iPad cause the much larger screen and resulting extra physical control space. If you like manic shooters these are the best available by far. Atomic Edge posted:1) I use VLC on my iPhone and like it a lot. I use AirVideo when I'm at home, and VLC when I am away from home. Not sure how it compares to Bookman since I haven't used that in a while, but it seems decent enough for a free app. I think the thing that bugged me about Bookman before was that the UI seemed a bit busy or convoluted, like too many buttons or options or something. ComicFlow is pretty simple but clean, nice for just dumping a bunch of files on there to read, but perhaps too simple for long term organization. If it doesn't do cbr/cbz, what makes it any good for comics? Any comics I have that aren't scans of paper have drm.

2-4 in-person Multiplayer game: MultiPong. There's a single player mode too but it isn't quite as fun as multiplayer.

FAG posted:If it doesn't do cbr/cbz, what makes it any good for comics? Any comics I have that aren't scans of paper have drm. I'm big on free wherever possible. As such, I strongly recommend Stanza for CBR reading. For note taking I really like Simplenote - I have notes synced across 2 iOS devices, my desktop and my laptop. http://simplenoteapp.com/downloads/ has information on applications across different platforms that synch with Simplenote. This is probably my #1 must-have app - even more so than Mail, Safari, etc. I can't speak to any of the Windows applications, but I use Notational Velocity on my Macs - the sync is flawless and now I get tags. Now for a question: if anyone's using one of the Backpack (37signals) apps, I'd really like to know which one.

Pissflaps posted:I have atomic browser and icab mobile and i spend hours agonising over which one is better I just can't decide! iCab is by far the better browser based on how customizable it is (so you can make it as lovely as Atomic Browser if you want). Also, it says "downloading" because the apps are sandboxed: the only way for one application to communicate with another is through a URL, so the first application has to actually "host" the file and have the second "download" it, since both apps supposedly don't know that the other exists. e: a good overview of this is coincidentally on the icab blog Quine Connoisseur fucked around with this message at Mar 7, 2011 around 01:22 |

Does anyone know why The Walking Dead has its own separate app and isn't available on Comixology? Seeing as they were made by the same company I just thought it was a bit weird.

Does anyone have any thoughts on good old fashioned document making apps, along the lines of Pages but more seamless, more like word, and switches well? Pages has been annoying me so I was wondering what else is out there.

Paprika isn't free, it's $4.99. And you might as well mention Epicurious and Big Oven as the big two recipe managers. They both have good points and bad points. E: you might also want to put in a link to the iOS Music Production thread in Musician's Lounge. WithoutTheFezOn fucked around with this message at Mar 7, 2011 around 04:14 |

randyest posted:QuickOffice Connect plus a free DropBox account is pretty sweet. It also does Google docs apps all up in that cloudy thing. If I grab a file from DropBox, open it in QuickOffice and mess around with it, can I save the edited file back to my DropBox? Or will it only save on the device?

Can anyone recommend me a nice rdp app for the iPad. There are a few on the app store but I don't want to blow 15+ on each app to see which one works best

for cloud storage, but other than that is pretty awesome. Goon made, I don't remember the dude's name, but he's been really receptive to feature requests if you do hunt him down.
