FLX posted:

Okay, first impressions of GarageBand on my iPad 1, running iOS 4.3:

- the velocity sensing works incredibly well with the keyboard and drum instruments
- you can hit the drums at several different spots to produce different sounds
- overall program performance is good and there are only some occasions where you see a loading bar saying "optimizing performance"
- the guitar and bass interface is really cool, but you can't play any chords you want. You can only play eight preset chords from your song's global key.
- autoplay is funny, but I don't see myself using it really
- while the are lots of stomp boxes and amps to choose from when recording something through the iPad's mic/line-in (which I haven't tried yet) you can't apply those to the included guitar instrument. The guitar instrument only features four guitar presets with zero or two fixed stomp boxes, that you can only switch on or off.
- you don't seem to be able to edit your midi tracks after recording them in real time. I.e. if you want to change a note afterwards, you'll have to play the part again. There is an auto-quantization option though.

For anyone still trying out notepad programs I just noticed another one, UPAD, and played with the lite version for a few minutes. It seems pretty nice, has a nice looking UI and appears to be able to do most of what Note Taker can do (yay, PDF annotation), and runs pretty smoothly. The zoom box seems to move snapped to a grid for better or worse (good for writing, annoying for more free form writing/drawing all over the place).

It also does other stuff but I haven't tried them out. In any case it seems pretty nice and the free one appears to let you have five notebooks, might as well try it out if you're looking for a notepad app.

"Cool music apps" is kind of broad, but the iPad has a fairly large assortment of music-making apps for it. They tend to get pricey, but there are usually lots of YouTube videos about them. Also, there's an iOS music production thread in Musicians' Lounge.

Hey, I'm picking up an iPad 2 when they come out here in Canada (on the 25th ) and I was really wondering how well the machine in general runs iPhone apps in 2x mode. There's a bunch of apps I've really wanted to play like Dodonpachi or my copy of Game Dev Story on an iPad but I'm worried that some games just might not transition well to it.

Anything I should know beforehand? Any kind of game genres or a popular game that doesn't play right in 2x? The only iPhone apps I really want to play are Game Dev/Hot Springs and the Cave shooters but it would be nice to know if other apps would work just as well.

I've literally never run into anything that didn't work well in 2x mode, and I've played all kinds of games with virtual d-pads and what not. Really the only downside is that the scaling can be god awful ugly on some things.

The Cave shooters work great, better than on the iPhone cause there's more physical space for your fingers. They have some smoothing in 2x though, so instead of sharp pixel graphics they're blurred a bit (same as on iPhone 4). Not a huge deal (doesn't affect gameplay) but kind of annoying if you like sharp pixels.

That AutoCAD thing is what I'm looking for but you need their $3,000 software to publish to that App it looks like. The first viewer seems to be for art 3D models, my CAD software won't publish to it.

Thanks for looking though, I didn't find either of those while googling.

Depends on what format you're after though. The 3dvia only does Solidworks, Catia and Google Sketchup but is much cheaper up front and doesn't require very pricey in-app purchases to add support for other formats.

If .stl is the only format you need though (or need other formats but have money to burn...) then vuecad is definitely better.

I think it's quite good. You basically get PDF-like versions of the print magazines (i.e. not layouted especially for the iPad) so you sometimes have to zoom in and pan around to make small text readable, but it's not too much of a hassle. You can download magazines and read them offline of course. Go ahead and download the app and some free sample magazines to see if it suits your needs. What's nice is that you can buy international magazines and are not restricted to your own country, like in the app store for example.

Not sure on the Internet part of it but I love zinio. I've switched to getting all my car mags to zinio and I have zero issues with usability. They're very easy to read and the interactive features are pretty cool. Try some of the free sample magazines you get when you download it and see how it works out for you. Not that I can help, but have you emailed any/all of the developers? If it's a genuine issue for 10% of the population, it seems like something they'd want to fix if they can.

Awesome.

Awesome to

Opera files will only be accessible to Opera, so the answer is no. Jailbreaking might get you some kind of workaround, but the fact that apps are sandboxed from each other is what will prevent what you want to do.

IM app question. I was playing around with IM+ free to get a feel for it (drat you beejive for having no free version!) and I noticed that if I close the app and open it back up, restoring a conversation takes quite some time. Is that normal? A quirk with the free app only? And does beejive do it too?
