Are you using dd-wrt by any chance? I had a problem that sounds like what you're describing. The fix is to switch to Google DNS (8.8.8.8) on the iPad. I guess there's something incompatible between DNS on dd-wrt and the Netflix app.

I use DD-WRT and don't have a lick of problem with Netflix on the iPad through it. Maybe update your firmware?

Yes. Flipbook is pretty cool for the way it combines news (from a huge array of sources, including Economist for free!) and facebook and/or twitter. If it didn't waste screen space with retweet notices on some stuff it'd be perfect. I still use it everyday.

You can walk into a movie theater in Amsterdam and buy a beer. And I don't mean just like in no paper cup, I'm talking about a glass of beer. And in Paris, you can buy a beer at McDonald's. And you know what they call a Quarter Pounder with Cheese in Paris?

Nice op and finally a decent thread, but add News Rack to RSS Apps. I enjoy it way more than any of the other ones out there and for some reason I really did not like Reeder on my iPad. On my iPhone yes... iPad no.

I really like Weatherbug for iPad. It's now free (ads are pretty unobtrusive) and has maps, forecast, and local weather cams. Plus, you can add a bunch of different locations and bounce between them pretty quickly, so it's great for traveling.

Nope, Comcast default DNS. Changing to Google DNS worked immediately

Mine works here at work just fine but not at home. I'll try the DNS switch and let y'all know. My roommate, who manages the router/everything else that has to do with computers because I am a moron, informed me that we do indeed use DD-WRT at home.

frumpsnake

The sad part is, he wasn't always evil.

It's not really a mystery.

Content providers try to return the nearest server geographically when you perform a DNS lookup. By using a provider you can end up hitting a completely different server that's closer to your DNS provider rather than your ISPs.

This can also go the other way and hurt performance, usually only (but not necessarily) if you're outside of North America.

edit: Apparently the problem is DNSMasq. Turn it off in DD-WRT/Tomato/OpenWRT etc. and you shouldn't have problems.

Not entirely, the problem is actually Netflix's use of DNS rebinding. If you're using DNSMasq (and you should be), disable "no DNS rebind" and watch Netflix start working again.

^^^^ do what's below, I'm going to try it tonight, because after switching to GoogleDNS, there are other places I can't access. Very frustrating. If the below works, it's a win-win.

I owned an Amiga when they were the thing to have and played Speedball 2 to death. Anyway, I got the iPad version for 59p and it's pretty good. If you remember the original game, all the sounds are there and it plays very similarly.

There are some subtle differences that keen players of the original will notice, but overall not a bad effort. Would be great if they could remake more Bitmap Brothers games of the era.

Planning to get the wifey an iPad 2 on Friday, and I'd like to pre-load it up with some cool stuff before giving it to her. Please fellow goons, help me pleasure please my wife. Basically I'm looking in three areas:

- Music apps. She's a music major (horn and piano). I'm definitely gonna grab Garage Band; are there any other cool music apps out there?
- Single-player games for her. She likes Plants vs Zombies (but has played it to death on PC), Dr. Mario, Tilt to Live, Dungeon Raid, and Sword & Poker.
- Single-system two-player games for us. If anyone has a link to a big list or something I could browse that'd be great.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Oh no

"Cool music apps" is kind of broad, but the iPad has a fairly large assortment of music-making apps for it. They tend to get pricey, but there are usually lots of YouTube videos about them. As one suggestion, check out ThumbJam. And everyone, music major or not, should have BeBot installed (the two are kind of similar).

Also, there's an iOS music production thread in Musicians' Lounge.

For music apps, there are a couple cool, silly toys and some more serious stuff. Get mugician, it's free and fun to play with. Basically it's a 12 string bass simulator, but far stranger. Funk box is neat for basic drum patterning, and the bs16i is a keyboard app I haven't yet learned everything about but have entirely too much fun with.
World of Goo is an incredible little physics puzzler, gaming wise, that everyone should love. If you don't, you're an awful person.
