I mean, I see why some people dislike him because he looks pretty disgusting and tends to get emotional during games, but he's generally cordial, polite, and by-the-book in his interviews and real-life endeavors. He's active in charities and community work, none of his teammates really talk poo poo about him (he got into a fight with Manny once but they're just like polar opposite personalities so whatever) and he doesn't talk poo poo in public. He's obviously really easy to mock and make fun of, what with his batting stance, facial hair, and on-field demeanor. Is he a prick because he charged the mound that one time, or because he gets visibly upset when he strikes out on occasion? Now Curt Schilling is a total prick and a weirdo, absolutely. I dunno I just think don't think that because someone plays baseball emotionally at times that it necessarily makes them a bad person, and having watched Youkilis for years I think people have a really overblown opinion of him. Not that I really care because he does all the things you guys are saying to a certain extent, but in interviews and stuff he really comes across as a cool and down to earth guy who is a lot more intelligent than your average baseball player. Dustin Pedroia is WAY more of a prick than Youkilis for example, although he's kind of funny about it so that helps make up for it I guess.

But honestly, I find it all so loving funny because it still goes back to the Moneyball thing, and the old-timey scouts notion of "the good face". How scouts love these square-jawed perfectly built good-looking guys with amazing bodies and tremendous athletic ability. And then a guy like Youk who is fat and squat and ugly and balding with a really bad body and no real athleticism was able to get drafted in the 8th round by the Sox and go on to be one of the best hitters in the AL - he was of course mentioned prominently in Moneyball for these exact reasons before he even got to AAA. And despite all of this even stat geeks like us who properly understand his talent still have this natural aversion to him in part because he's so loving tough to look at. DONT READ THIS POST posted:Dustin Pedroia doesn't seem like the guy to throw his helmet at a 20 year old rookie Eh, give him a few years. The 94 strike didn't really bother me all that much (I was still really young though) but the threatened work stoppage in the early 00s (that got resolved at like the very last second) would have literally killed me. A lot of people forget that one for whatever reason but what I remember from it was that it was a lot worse than 94 and if it went through it probably would have been the end of baseball as we know it
