I wish I could quote archived posts because there are a lot of amazon links in there that I'm not going to manually type out.

We could also make a new book thread. I'm always looking for stuff to read.

Angels fans hate AJ for the 2005 playoffs, though that was way more the ump's fault.

He is one of those guys, despite what The Prisoner says, that everyone hates if he's not on your team. But if he is...AJ owns

Giants fans boo'd him heavily today in the Sox/Giants spring training game, for what it's worth. Twins fans also give him a ton of poo poo whenever they play.

In looking at OPS+, it seems to be OPS adjusted for the hitter's ballpark. Is 111 average? Above average? Help me understand this so I can cling to any hope that the Bucs will be good soon.

100 is average, so 111 is slightly above average. It's OPS adjusted for ballpark factors and shows how a player did compared to the league average.

I have a quick question regarding who gets the win/loss in a game. On Sunday, the Blue Jays lost 4-3 to the Twins. Currently, Brett Cecil is the pitcher of record according to ESPN.

I thought that because a third Jay run was scored, that the loss would have been moved on to Jon Rauch, who gave up a solo shot in the top of the ninth, and Cecil would get a no-decision. Can someone explain where I went wrong?

When Cecil left the game his team was losing, and they never came back to tie/take the lead, so the loss stays with him. If the game was tied when Rauch gave up the home run(it was 3-2 Twins, the homer made it 4-2 Twins) he would have taken the loss and Cecil would have gotten the no decision.

I guess these might too basic compared to all the stat questions, but I think it is within the purview of this thread.

Is there some sort of maximum distance set to how much of a lead a runner can take when attempting to steal? Or can you theoretically walk almost all the way from first to second before the pitch if the pitcher wasn't looking and did not pick you off?

No maximum distance. The runner is free to take as big or small of a lead as he wants. Sometimes(though rarely) with slower players, pitchers will pretty much ignore them at first base. They'll end up getting a big lead and going into second uncontested. This kind of happened with David Ortiz last night: http://www.sportsgrid.com/mlb/david...e-a-base-video/

Also the team makeup (Pitcher, Catcher, 3 basemen, 3 outfielders, shortstop) seems much more solid than say, basketball or football, where you change what kind of players you have out situationally. I looked at the MLB official rules and didn't think I saw anything, but is there anything preventing a team from running with say, no shortstop and 4 outfielders?

You can set up your defense any way you like. A lot of teams during the course of a game will use a shift for certain batters based on where they usually hit the ball. Take a look at this picture, and notice that it isn't an outfielder in right field, but the second baseman: http://www.flickr.com/photos/wgor/559522172/

It's reasonable for the Yankees but not at all realistic. No one is taking A-Rod's contract, especially Miami of all places.

He'll still be a decent/good player for a few years but his contract is bad and he's aging fairly rapidly.

Is there a particular reason we measure pitcher workload by innings, instead of pitches? A 3-pitch inning shouldn't count the same as a 35 pitch inning where you gave up 3 runs, right?

This is why sample size is important. When you pitch enough innings, it evens out.

As a general rule of thumb, what would an "average" score for OBP, SLG and OPS be? It just occurred to me the other day that Batting Average is the only batting stat I look at because I don't actually know what would constitute good, bad etc with the others

MLB average in 2012: .320 OBP .399 SLG .719 OPS

MLB average in 2000: .345 OBP .437 SLG .782 OPS

So there will be differences depending on the time period. You also have a lot of difference between positions. A 'normal' OPS for a 1B/3B will generally be higher than the 'normal' OPS for a catcher/shortstop.

for the White Sox, the answer is pretty simple: Left field is where the leadoff man lives. Ozzie Guillen had a very narrow definition of what a leadoff man should look like, and left field happened to be the one area where Kenny Williams could acquire a leadoffy guy after other leadoffy projects, like Chris Getz, failed. Look at the number of games where the left fielder batted first (leadoff hitter OBP in parentheses):

2005: 140 (.338)
2006: 159 (.332)
2010: 147 (.333)
2011: 160 (.323)

And in 2011, in the two games where a left fielder didn't lead off, it's only because Juan Pierre was the DH.

What are the main distinctions between different kinds of pitchers and what are they used for? In addition to starter, reliever, closer are there "role players" like there are on a basketball or football team?

There's also typically a "set-up guy" who works the 8th inning leading to the closer in the 9th. Most teams usually have a designated long reliever as well for times when the starter gets roughed up early and they need someone to go 3-4 innings.
