How is Warren Ellis' run on Excalibur? I really like Ellis in general.

I am on the last issue of 100 bullets and am wondering what series I should start next.
I am not a big fan of superhero books but am willing to give it a try( I read Batman RIP but just found it confusing, I did enjoy The Long Halloween and Dark Knight Returns)
I currently also read Scalped, Punisher Max and most stuff by Garth Ennis. Ideally a series that has an end would be nice. Gritty Noir stuff is my favourite, I have been considering some one shots I saw at the store written by Eduardo Risso and Brian Azarello or trying the Marvel Noir comics.

Try Deus Ex Machina. It's not super noir-ish but it has an interesting hook: retired superhero runs for mayor of NYC and wins. It has a beginning and end, and it's consistently good.

What's a good place to start in terms of finding Tony Stark's reaction once he's told about all the questionable poo poo he did before he lost his memory? I have to think that makes for a good story.

If I've never been a big Flash reader despite enjoying the character, is the Johns Flash Omnibus worth picking up?

I asked once before and I'm hoping for better luck this time, is Warren Ellis' Exaclibur run any good? I know it got the Visionaries treatment but that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

Couple specific questions regarding books that sound interesting:

a)Empire by Mark Waid, where a Dr.Doom analog wins in his fight against heroes and becomes Emperor of Earth. How is it? Is the trade fairly available?

b)NYX. Saw a big hardcover covering a fair amount of issues it seems (it's about the size of the Powers Def, HC's) not sure if it was Marjorie Liu or not.

The Titans run by Johns is what put him on the map, right? Because I saw the Omnibus solicit and it sounds intriguing.

poo poo, I'd frgotten that I've read Crooked Little Vein (liked it), and Thunderbolts(sorta wish he still wrote it). And I have the first volume of Global Frequency, it's quite good. But I'll check out Fell and Stormwatch.

You wanna read the OSHC Utopia, which collects the issues of Dark Avengers not collected in your OSHC.

I am intrigued by Exiles. What's the really good stuff, and what should I avoid other than Claremont?

Oh, it's excellent. One of my favorite series ever.

I guess you could think of it as a more human, down to earth version of Batman set in the 1930s.

If you're coming from Sandman and you're expecting a huge overarching story or lots of supernatural elements you'll be sorely disappointed, tho. There's lots of interesting character development over the course of the series, but it's mostly about the individual crime cases of each arc. The supernatural stuff is mostly just weird dreams Wesley Dodds has about the cases he's working on and the occasional cameo from other golden-age heroes.

It's pretty much what you'd expect from seeing the covers, really. Pulpy noir detective fiction. The crimes are a little more horrible and the people aren't as whitewashed as the usual stuff depicting that era, but yeah.

It sounds right up my alley. I've always enjoyed Wesley popping up in Starman and Kingdom Come, and I love the Sandman costume. I love noir, too.

So I was thinking about writing about how love and sexuality are portrayed in comic books....can I get some recommendations on some good reading material to be able to write about this in a fairly astute manner?

El Gallinero Gros
Mar 17, 2010

Thanks guys. The beauty is I've read some of this stuff but for whatever reason, did not think of it.

One thing though: I wouldn't mind some negative examples, because I think it's important that comics can send bad messages just like it can be a great example of positivity regarding sexulaity and love. I'll definitely mention Chris Claremont's weird need to include his mind control fetish in so many stories, Rob Liefeld protesting a bit too much with Rictor being outed as pansexual, and the unfortunate Superman/Barda thing. I'll also talk about Wonder Woman's interesting origins (although I don't consider that a negative, it's an interesting story and I'm pretty sure Werthem's slimy rear end pounced on it).

There's also a very good Captain America mini-series called Truth set in WWII which centres around a black soldier who was the test subject for the super solider formula they later used on Steve Rogers.

There's also New Frontier, a DC mini-series set during WWII where many superheroes retroactively make their debut. There's also an animated version that made me really appreciate Martian Mnahunter/J'onn J'onzz.
