Lame Bryant posted:I've been reading "Is Superman a Spy?" and I love all these fun facts and bits of trivia on comics, and I was just wondering what other comics history books are out there, and which are worth reading I guess. Not sure how far off this is, but I figure some of you might be able to recommend something. I've read Ronin Ro's "Tales to Astonish" and it's pretty good but it mainly concerns itself with Lee and Kirby. Probably the best comics history book available is Gerard Jones' "Men of Tomorrow: Geeks, Gangsters, and the Birth of the Comic Book". A fantastic read.

Asterios Polyp by David Mazzucheeli springs immediately to mind. As does Chris Ware's Acme Novelty Library series.

Is Jeff Parker's take on Red Hulk worth reading? I see there's a trade, Scorched Earth, is this a good jumping on point? Is there anything vital (or just good) that I should read beforehand? I gave up on Hulk after World War Hulk and the arrival of Loeb

Cheers for all the Red Hulk info. I'll grab the Scorched Earth trade. I think I might hang fire on the regular Hulk book just in case a bigger trade or HC shows up. I'm a fan of both Pak and Pelletier but I'll be damned if I'm paying good money for a trade that only collects four issues worth of material!

Kentucky Shark posted:I'm kind of morbidly curious about Aquaman, since he always gets ragged on for being one of the lamer superheroes around. Are there any particularly good runs on the character? Amazon doesn't seem to have a whole lot in the way of trades available. Depending on how far back you're willing to go, this is coming out soon and is a very well regarded story. I've got it on pre-order and am looking forward to it. http://www.amazon.com/Aquaman-Death...05881824&sr=8-1 I can't comment on the Busiek run as I've never read it but Peter David's stint on Aquaman is pretty drat good. Sadly, there are no in-print trades. Aquaman is massively under-represented in the collected editions department.

Uthor posted:Isn't Fraction's Fear Itself basically an Iron Man/Thor story? Sounds like a best of both worlds situation, though you'd probably want to read the lead in series first. It's more of a Cap / Thor story really. What with both of them having movies out this year.

Roydrowsy posted:That being said, I'm pretty sure that the omnibus that is being released is the "The New Teen Titans" Wolfman/Perez stuff from the 80's, which really set the tone for every Teen Titans story to follow ever. (Current writers are STILL dipping back to that era and reusing plots and characters). There are two Omnibuses coming out, The Wolfman / Perez one, and a Johns one.

Uthor posted:One of my first comics was Warlock Chronicles and ever since then, I've been interested in Thanos, the Infinity Gems, and Marvel space opera in general. I've read Infinity Gauntlet, I'm keeping up with everything happening since Annihilation, I've picked up random Silver Surfer things, but I've never really read much with Adam Warlock. To be honest, the best Warlock Stories are the Starlin originals from the seventies. I think they're only collected in hardcover Masterworks which can be on the expensive side. He first appeared as "Him" in some early issues of Fantastic Four and Thor but I think he got a bit revamped when he became Adam Warlock proper.

Skwirl posted:With the movie coming out next year, I've been more interested in the original Avengers, I've only ever really read New Avengers. What's a good place to start Pre-Disassembled? To be honest, the Avengers, like any other long running book, has more bad periods than it has good ones but there are plenty of good books out there. Kurt Busieks run is very highly regarded. It's collected in the Avengers Assemble hardcovers (which are getting very hard to find) but the first volume came out in paperback a short while ago and should be easy to get hold of. Some other stories worth your time, and readily available in trade, are: Under Siege (not to be confused with the recent Siege book), The Kree Skrull War, The Serpent Crown, The Korvac Saga and maybe Avengers Forever, it's kind of a love it or hate it book.

S-Alpha posted:I've been looking into reading some Nova stuff for a while now, but I have pretty much no idea where to start. He always seemed pretty cool, and the more I see of him, the more interested I am. What would be a good place to start with him? If you start with the first Annihilation series and then continue into the Abnett and Lanning penned series then you're good to go. If that makes you want to get into the wider Cosmic Marvel universe then you should also check out "events" such as Annihilation: Conquest, Realm of Kings, War of Kings and The Thanos Imperative (as well as the Guardians of the Galaxy ongoing series) However, if you're looking to get the Nova stuff in trades then a couple of the later volumes are out of print and ridiculously hard to find for a reasonable price.

SockPuppet posted:Moonknight seems like he might be an interesting guy from his wikipedia entry. Are there any good Moonknight comics? The absolute best Moon Knight stuff is the original series by Moench and Sienkiewicz. Everything else pales in comparison. Get Essential Moon Knight volumes 1 and 2 for their run. Don't be put off by the black and white nature of the Essentials books, the art looks awesome in black and white.

Slayer1597 posted:I am not joking, but I also have alot of disposable income. If you really went to set yourself up for a fuckton of disappointment then the best place to check is eBay. Search for completed listings of the comics you've got to see what people are actually prepared to pay for them. Ignore any and all comic book price guides. They're worthless.

Red Mundus posted:Is Orc Stain worth looking into? I've heard the art is amazing but I'm more worried about the story. From what I've read it looks very polarizing. It's fantastic but it is getting very hard to find. I think the trade's out of print at the moment so people are trying to sell it for silly money on places like Amazon Marketplace. I got lucky and Amazon UK still had some in stock a couple of weeks ago (sadly not any more) and I'm so glad I did. edit: Holy poo poo. Amazon.com Marketplace sellers are asking over a GRAND for the first trade! Makes Amazon UK's £425 seem almost reasonable. Shameless fucked around with this message at Feb 23, 2012 around 16:01 |

If you're not averse to older stuff (and it's not like it really matters with Conan) then I'd definitely recommend the Savage Sword Of Conan collections from Dark Horse comics. Marvels is well worth picking up, it's excellent. Ruins is absolutely terrible and should be avoided at all costs. All just my opinion but I'd be amazed if anyone recommended Ruins.

And seconding Waterhaul's recommendation for Bulletproof Coffin. It's ace!
