The Heavy Eyes, very 70's bluesy stoner metal. The bandcamp EP is very rough, they really emphasize that point lol. If they sound this good on a rough recording I can't wait to hear a properly produced album.

I hope they just mic up the drums and bump up the snare, because seriously everything else is perfect.

Do any of you musicians know of any good resource/forum for learning about amplification/technique/tips + tricks that's specifically tailored to playing sludge/doom metal?

I've been playing music for a long time and I'm finally starting to dabble into playing the genre, but with a genre that's basically defined by amazing tone and sound quality it would be nice to have a primer.

Are there any drone bands out there like Sunn that are a bit more melodic? I love the idea of just pure bass and sound at insanely slow tempos, but I need just a little bit of melody or something to really seal the deal.

Also, if you're brand new at guitar buying good quality used things that keep their value is a great idea because you can always resell for a good amount and trade up. Like, if you're gonna get a microphone get a Shure SM57/SM58 because they're basically an industry standard and you're always going to get a good price out of it.

Stay away from behringer/bugera and research your stuff. I just recently got into sludge guitar as well (been playing for years) and there is nothing better than hearing the rattle of your speakers and making sick rear end riffs that move your bowels.

I'm absolutely excited to see that Thou is supporting Wolves in the Throne Room on their east coast tour.

Get to see two kick rear end bands next month.

Saw Thou/WITTR last night at a mill/loading dock in Providence. They both sounded really awesome. Should have skipped the opener, whose gimmick was woman lead singer who assaults crowd with mic cord and body odor.

Ya, I was at the show last night as well. Probably one of the coolest venues I've ever seen. Wolves seemed kinda boring after seeing Thou play. I felt like instead of being a black metal band primarily, they made the shift to drone/doom and kinda forgot to bring the bass guitar. It was weird as gently caress that literally no band said anything to the crowd, I've never seen that before. Just weird creepy silence. Thou is a must see live though.

I was in the back so I missed the opening band's body odor/mic assault, but they sounded like they had potential to be a good band. Just needs work.

I couldn't see Thou when they were playing, but there was an awesome shadow of them on the left wall. It gave me a huge black mass vibe, like witches dancing in firelight. I've never seen a show there before.

Ya, I'm hoping some people took a lot of photos, because it looked fuckin amazing.

Awesome, I'm glad to hear it kicked rear end! I was mainly going for Thou but got into WitTR after I got the ticket (and I think they rock btw) so hopefully I'll catch them soon.

I'm also trying to track down another NYC/CT doom or sludge show for Nov. to make up for missing this, what are some good sites that keep track?

I have found a couple sites for east CT/RI there might be some spillover into the west and NY.

Yeah I absolutely love the middle section - one of those riffs that's good enough on its own merits that it can be played over and over for 10 minutes. Nice use of delay/looping too. The ending is great, too. Good to hear their roots anyway but Hippie Killer is definitely a superior follow-up

Ya, that middle clean section starting around 42m is by far my favorite. It's just 20 minutes of mind soothing beauty, I love that in doom music if you really enjoy a song you can be happy that its gonna go on forever.

Besides ebay and craigslist, do you musicians have any websites you frequently surf to find vintage amps/gear? I'm talking about the usual suspects like old Peaveys, Sound City, Sunn, and maybe some Ampeg.

Yeah, everyone is pretty much a greedy douche in this whole mess...

Where does it say this?

Being in bands is absolutely awesome until someone realizes they can make money or a career from it. Then you start to see who the REAL people are. It's not fun at all.

Often times in you can hear a tapping sound that usually just sounds like the guitar pick hitting a pickup. I don't know what it actually is though as sometimes it doesn't seem to fit with the guitar rhythm like I would expect. What's that sound?
Here's an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?featur...hkYePujR0#t=56s

You can hear it a lot better throughout http://youtu.be/DmxTetB_VVM

It sounds like someone lightly tapping a clave to me.

I knew I had read somewhere who it was, but couldn't remember where. Me being un-musical I always wonder how hard it is to learn a bunch of songs real fast.

It's very easy to learn songs like Weedeater's (along with most music) quickly.

Music generally follows the same pattern. Metal does change up these conventions, but it's a lot of the same poo poo repeated.

Intro (which is usually a shortened chorus)
Verse
Chorus
Verse
Bridge
Chorus
Repeat chorus 1/2 step up
Outro

You just need to learn the important cues like where to be quiet, stops in the music, clean parts, and solos. A couple quick listens of Weedeater's setlist and you can bullshit your way through a set. Most people (I would, because I play drums) don't pay attention to that poo poo because they just want to see Dixie play bass.

For tech death/prog metal it's way more tough. There are a lot of odd time signatures and weird poo poo happening so, depending on the musician's prior-knowledge of the material and skill it would take a while.

The riff around 7:50 of Burning the Altar is the second heaviest thing I've ever heard.

The actual heaviest thing I've ever heard is the "riff" around 10:00 on The Mental Tyrant from The Unreal Never Lived. Play it on a good system and it feels like the oxygen is being sucked out of the room.

I'd definitely be interested in reading more PYF sludge/stoner riffs. For me the ending of Bongzilla's Keefmaster is heavy as gently caress. The production on this album makes it sound so thick.
