But I get what he's saying, he doesn't hate Asian gifs he just wishes they had their own separate but equal thread, so the white gifs don't have to look at them you see.

But what if complaining about memes has become a meme itself?

Someone in the gif thread requests someone make a gif into a meme/macro. Someone obliges, thus breaking the rules. However, they got a free pass because they were fulfilling someone's request. I'm not quite sure I agree with that logic. We have a meme thread, and we have a request images thread, so those could be used to get images turned into macros. It's a rule for the gifs thread to keep memes/macros out, so posting one out of the goodness of your heart doesn't seem like a strong enough reason to avoid punishment. Along the same lines, requesting or encouraging people to post images that are against the thread rules, that seems like it could be grounds for probation as well.

I'd be perfectly happy with the rules getting relaxed but as they stand in the name of consistency if the person wanted to request the GIF be macro'd they should have gone to the image macro thread and requested it there. (USER WAS PUT ON PROBATION FOR THIS POST)

Oh no you fell into the trap! Really, though, I'm sure if that kind of behaviour becomes an epidemic, it'll be dealt with. Incidentally it also says in the rules for the gif thread that subtitles are just fine, re: your concern with how strict the rules are. Course, it also says no macros, but it was just a request. I think you guys are over-thinking this a bit.

I've been thinking a general gif request thread might be a good idea, actually, to cover this. I'm a little tired of "Can someone make this avatar sized?" personally. Most pages in the thread have a request now so I think it would be sustainable. Plus people could do silly poo poo like "now make the table jiggle and the jello stay still" there. Would a separation make it better? Macro'd gif requests would be allowed there because that'd be where gif wizards are to be found. I'm not going to probate someone for making a macro gif when someone else asked them to. I'm not going to probate someone for fulfilling a request, just like a zillion other requests have been fulfilled. If people POST macros unbidden, they'll be probated. If people start demanding macros all the time, I'll revisit the issue. Subtitles and even impact-font-subtitles-that-totally-look-like-macros are not probateable anymore. I always try to read lips when I'm not sure which one it is. I'm virtually certain that cat didn't really say Deal With It, though, so that was an easy one. I don't really even probate people in the gif thread a lot recently so I'm not sure about why you're concerned about it being strict It seems to have been running very well lately and I've been really pleased with how people have been staying interesting and/or gif-y.

There is a ridiculously huge amount of brony-chat going on PYF Fandom Lunacy, Image Macros, Awkward and Ugly, and at least one other thread that I can't recall. Only Awkward and Ugly allows bronies, but there is a lot of derail that is not about how awkward/ugly bronies are. I'd like to request some mod reminders that brony derails are terrible.

The fandom lunacy thread one isn't much of a derail, it's well within the thread's intentions to discuss internet wierdos.

I'd agree, except the Fandom Lunacy OP requests that discussion of MLP be kept to a minimum to avoid derails, and the thread is now discussing the same old same old subjects of "The target audience is little girls!" and simply rehashing the perpetual arguments that pop up whenever MLP is mentioned.

We also had brony chat in the D&D reddit thread because they're melting down. And the other PYF threads are also tangentially related to it internet loonies and their weird habits, so why not enjoy the pony meltdown shitshow? All in all, despite not knowing what the gently caress anyone was up in arms about, it's been a hilarious read across those four or five threads talking about it because those manchildren are apparently preparing to self-immolate because a character was changed.

'Derpygate' is the most hilarious thing in the world right now and is going to be around for a while, so I think distinction should be made between laughing at (as Yonic called it,) a current event, and making tired rehashes of the same "Ugh, I don't know how anyone could watch this, isn't this for kids?" posts that we have all seen hundreds of times already. If a poster is trying to make a derail that no one wants, or is only there to troll, or is so white-noise that they may as well be emptyquoting, then they are in probate-able territory without MLP even being a factor.

Why are macros even banned in image threads? The point of the site-wide macro ban was to keep people from making GBS threads up discussion threads with a picture of a cat saying "I LIKE YOUR POST." If it's just a thread for posting funny pictures there's no real reason to single out the ones that have words on them. Seems to me that macros have been banned for so long that the letter of the law has completely obscured the spirit.

Some people passionately hate image macros and its easier to put them into its own thread than to constantly try and reign in derails in the main thread. It will always get debated abotu if they're funny or lovely or "oh this one is good" so its better to keep it separate for mod sanity. See also the anime gif thread, made for pretty much the same reason.

I doubt the moratorium on macros/memes is going to be lifted any day soon, and it really shouldn't be. It still serves its purpose; we can see that on the occasion when some retard posts one outside the graciously designated meme zone, and you realize how inappropriate, unfunny, and lazy they are outside of that context. You might get a laugh out of it but that's not reason enough to go hogwild and allow them everywhere. They are counterproductive to content posting, period. The letter of the law is the same as the spirit in this case: compared to almost everything else, macros/memes are lazy and lovely, don't post them where other things are happening. Note: this isn't me "passionately hating image macros," I follow that thread to get the good ones, and have contributed to it too.

It served a purpose in trying to beat people over the head that we really do not care about how this macro totally happened to you one day or whatever the hell you learned on wikipedia for when a thread title, a rule in the OP, and a bunch of probations just isn't enough. Now people are posting the macro to their own posts and that is just stupid as hell and completely missing the point. I'm in favor of posting that macro to your own post being treated the same as reporting your own post or using the phrase, "I don't want to derail but...". The problem isn't the macro, it's that people keep posting derails.

Do you feel pensive whenever you write about the meme thread? Like do you get worried about what your AV will turn into? Not a dig on you, but I'd fret in your situation. I think the no1curr thing maybe needs to be rationed a bit and BB's coin-flipping thing is probably an awesome way to do that. When it returns to a lower, less thread-self-referencing level, maybe he can put the coin away. edit: oh snap, harmburger's tempting fate as we speak.
