Happy Birthday, Mr. President
I've finally listened to Success is Certain and while it's a solid Royce album I feel it will get lost in shuffle so to speak with Hell: The Sequel and Slaughterhouse, both of which quite frankly offer quite a bit more. Street Hop was better than Success is Certain but it's still a commendable effort standing above Rock City, MIC and Independence Day.

Death is Certain is still in my opinion Royce's finest hour.

I haven't listened to it in a minute but I remember liking Bar Exam 2 better than any of Royce's actual retail LPs. Imo dude suffers from a tragic case of try-too-hard for stuff that's gonna be sold and is at his best just having a good time rappenin'.

As an aside my buddy texted me this actual quote from one of his crazy-rear end coworkers yesterday: "man gently caress Royce da 5'9. That nigga killed Proof!"

:siren: DONT BAN ME THIS IS JUST A PSA BROUGHT TO YOU BY TEEPKICK SHAKUR AND THE GOOD FOLKS AT THE GOOD SQUAD :siren:

Ok since you asked:

I don't know if you are being ironic on purpose or willfully ignorant. First what is mainstream? Its 2011. There is only one stream. You want the same sound as Kanye or Doomtree? Those are two completely different things. That's like saying you want the performance of a Porsche 911 turbo or a Ford Fairlane. Stay with me now this isnt just an insult its part of a larger point...

You don't want to listen to music about guns or money but not only did you list a rapper who is literally named after a gun and raps about guns and money (and drugs), you also named Childish Gambino who raps strictly about getting money in order to get girls, and you listed Dre and Jay. No explanation needed there. How do you reconcile your wants with your reality? I cant. :cmon:

Listen I get it. You're new to rap and you don't quite understand it yet. Thats fine. Welcome to the genre you probably didn't even consider a genre until you heard your first Eminem song. Heres a few things you should understand though. First, the genre revolves around repetitive beats and is also largely based on the acquiring of ends, hollow tips and licks to hit and if you listen hard enough you'll find that just because a rapper touches on the subject there are small and often times subtle details that make the rapper completely unique and those are the things fans find enjoyment in. You want to be a fan right? Of course you do. I don't know if you actually listen to music or just skim through it but even Childish Gambino (if you recall you enjoy this guy) touched on it.

Donald Glover posted:

Here I go again talkin’ money, women, and clothes, and cars, right?
You could switch all of my words out with Plies’, right?
People sayin’ we’re the same, please, come from under me
We are just some rappers, got no luxury of subtlety
No subjects when we’re rappin’, we say it like we hear it
I put it on a track but I hope you get the spirit

Basically since you clearly DO NOT know what you want or even what to expect from the genre why don't you just take it all in and actively listen? That way you can come to a truly informed decision as to what you consider good and what you dont instead of whatever ignorant uninformed conclusion you've already come to. At worst you steel some music you wouldn't have bought anyway then delete. At best you actually find something you enjoy that sheds new light on what you consider just guns and money.

Things you may currently like (but I hope you grow out of in the very near future):

Not that anyone gives a poo poo what I think but I'm going to side with Caveman on Tech. With his latest releases (K.O.D., Bad Season, & All 6's and 7's), Tech has gotten away from the guns and money, for the most part, and is starting to venture into the Kid Cudi-Zro talk of isolation, and has gotten a lot more personal.

I mean you could go on but you would be wrong because every one of those songs is 5+ years old. Tech N9ne has around 10 albums. The majority of his poo poo is a lot deeper than a song with Brotha loving Lynch, A song that his old manager had him release, who he was very unhappy with, and a couple of collab joints with some other fellas. By himself he rarely raps about how much money he has, how man guns he lets pop off, or other things of that nature. He also owns.

This is an aside, but Fedor got his rear end handed to him by Hendo. In your face.

Not that Labor Days isn't good, but I think he was still finding out how to make an actual song rather than just a bunch of abstract lines that may or may not have any meaning. And it's the kind of thing that it can def take some getting used to.

DividedFrame, there's a playlist that has made its rounds on the internet for years, so it's a little out of date. It's basically the Arbitrarily Rated Top 500 Hip-Hop Songs from 1987-2007. The best thing I ever did for myself was go through that and find out what artists and what style of hip-hop I really enjoy. It has everything from golden age hip-hop to 90's west coast gangsta rap to hyphy to backpack rap to whatever the gently caress.

Then again, I still have no idea what my genre is since that PackFM track by ASL NIGGA was hot, but Blackstar is my favorite album ever, the rapper I'm following the closest lately is XV, and I can't stop dancing to Big Sean and Kanye's "Marvin & Chardonnay". Whatever.

Edit: Also if you're not following XV, what the gently caress. Go download Square in the Circle, Everybody's Nobody, Vizzy Zone, and Zero Heroes. Those are in chronological order, but he pretty much just gets better over time. drat near all of Zero Heroes is top-notch. There's some solid chill beats with great lyricism like "Me, You" and "Mirror's Edge" and "Reset Button", but he also has some poo poo that's just fun like "Awesome" and "Foreign Exchange Student".
