If you count Vancouver as part of the PNW (and why not, in a musical sense) there is TONS of great rap. Saukrates is one of my favorite singer/rappers of all time.

SPEAKING OF, that new Ro album is FIRE. JM's right, it's a different, less depressed lane for Ro (like he says in the interview, he doesn't make too much pain music anymore because life isn't so bad . Plus it's awesome watching him mack on the interview chick). You're also right that Meth IS more cohesive than Heroin (but it doesn't have that straight out the gate official monster like "Never let it go" was. That track's STILL in rotation.)

I prefer the old, suicidally-depressed Ro ON RECORD, to be honest (I'm glad he's sorted some of his problems out IRL, except for that one "negative bitch" of course). But hell, the dude's given us close to 10 albums of Pain Music- I'm glad he feeling better. And maybe we'll get some of that back on the new A.B.N. re-union.

Saukrates is from Tdot but we do have The Rascalz (Red1 is a cool dude) and Swollen Members + Moka Only.

And yeah nth'ing the love for Meth. Really liking Murderer which is a different type of track for him.

I dig the beat but he really just sound slike generic white rapper #25. Still though its better than a lot of what we have out here. Do any NW born and raised dudes remember that westside song they played on the radio like 10 years ago? It was just some random song that repped the westside but for some reason there was a Portland version of the song even tho the dude was from Cali. I have no idea what to ook for to find it on the 'tube.

I posted this in PHIZ but this I gotta get more people to see this. I know that Travis has been on Bun's solo recorsd but still this is weeeeeird

So I'm seeing Lupe Fiasco live and have never listened to him. I know he did that song that ripped the melody from Modest Mouse but that's pretty much it. What stuff will he play live and what albums should I listen to?

e. vv my bad!

e2. Having now listened to about two albums, I truly take back my past behavior of not having listened to Lupe Fiasco.

That's probably one reason why when compared to many other US cities/regions they don't have as many rappers who aren't on some kind of conscious type of poo poo, or rapping about coffee and snow (i like Blue Scholars, but it's kind of funny when they mention "the hood", seeing as they're from Seattle, and especially in said coffee and snow song).

I'm from the Detroit area, spent 8 days in Seattle and was completely blown away how safe every single part of that city felt. So, I totally get your point.

But, to be fair, terms like "the hood" and "the block" are kind of blanket terms used in the genre that can really be applied no matter where you come from. Most everyone lives in a neighborhood or on a housing block. To nitpick the terminology without the context is a bit unfair (I listened to both Coffee and Snow tracks just now and didn't catch what you're referring to). I think anyone could use a term like 'hood' to reference where they live or grew up because that's the common language of the genre. If the Blue Scholars started going off about rolling with guns or some thug poo poo I might be able to see your point.

it's a good album (maybe even drat good) but dude seriously does rap about girls 80% of the time. he can spit (and he does on songs like dollar and a dream iii) so i don't know why he doesn't more often. i don't mind a softer sound, but i just wish the album had more depth to it.

that said, he still put out a great album for his first outing. he outdoes most if not all of his contemporaries. it's no illmatic or reasonable doubt, but nothing is and nothing probably will be again

I've seen Wale twice now and I would have to advise that $15 is drastically overpaying to see him. Usually his sets are about 10-15 dudes on stage with the DJ quickly running through all of Wale's big songs (usually 90 seconds a piece) and the entire set will have go-go drums regardless of the way the original song sounded. If you like 90 second soundbites of songs and a lot of go-go drums, then maybe you will enjoy it. He didn't really have much crowd banter and rushed through his set both times. "Nike Boots" is probably the only song that was worth sticking around for and he's done with that in under 2 minutes. I think the only times where the crowd seemed into it were during "Nike Boots" and "Pretty Girls", but that's probably just because those are some of the more popular ones.

Can someone explain to me the fad of emulating the Pimp C verse when he talks about lean, his cup, and his leather and wood cars? I feel that I hear a lot of rappers starting verses in a similar way. They are just paying homage right? If so I like it.If not, I still like it.

Yeah I live in houston and when freestyling with friends/acquaintances many many people will actually default to the "mayn hol up" flow, its kind of amazing actually, I've witnessed straight up cowboys who you would not expect to have the faintest hip-hop rhythm start rapping all screwed up like. Not that it's particularly good but it is a phenomenon.

it really isnt good at all, that easy flow and one syllable rhyme patterns made every-goddamn-body and their brother think they could rap, and in texas during that boom it was incredibly annoying to have a good cipher going and some dude destroy the whole thing with his MANNE HOLD UP I DONE SWUNG I DONE SWINGED bullshit

but anyways, the poster asking about Pimp C meant that particular line, not the whole style

no it is probably the most obvious way of showing that you suck at freestyling but is quite interesting. these days that style is finally played out. most of my friends suck at freestyling anyway and just resort to rapping like whoever their favorite rapper is except a lot worse
