MC Fruit Stripe posted:who in the hell is JD Era? He's outshining Raekwon, how dare he Mixtapes are like "here's some fuckin music" which might include other people's beats and generally doesn't follow a strict album format. In many cases there's some rear end in a top hat screaming over the top of the beginning of all of the tracks. Quick and dirty, they are used for promotion for the real album that may contain many of the tracks from the mixtape, although often in more final form. Nowadays many mixtapes never see actual production, they are released digital only and show up on social networking sites and poo poo like that. Mixtapes are mostly free, though they were a major source of revenue starting with cats like Kid Capri. Mixtapes aren't always for single artists either. Dudes like Whiteowl put out huge 30 track tapes with themes or groups of artists that relate somehow. Mixtapes almost always predate actual release and are sometimes used to generate media interest in advance of physical release although some tapes are almost compilations to get recognition for singles that might have gone un-noticed when the album dropped because an artist lacked backing at the time. An album is more like "we have carefully selected and mastered all of these tracks for your listening enjoyment". More care is taken not to get sued, and all of the songs usually have been completely finished and samples/beats are cleared. Not always the case but major label releases in general are pretty careful nowadays with licensing. These albums see phyiscal pressing and end up in brick and mortar stores through networks of distribution set up by record labels. e: i should mention there's obviously still a huge indy hustle entirely seperate from the label system which consists of a bunch of cats pressing up albums on thier own, the internet has made this possible and is responsible for most of the world's really terrible and ultimately forgettable music, although major labels are not entirely innocent of putting out poo poo ee: here's another example of what some people do with mixtapes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mz-8B6pl19g (pretty much just a mashup, but you almost never see a legal real release like this barring the collabo b/w jay and linkin park THNDRTHF fucked around with this message at Jan 2, 2012 around 22:23 |

...I thought Collision Course was pretty fun. Anyway, on the subject of mixtapes versus albums, the former can also be used to take risks that labels wouldn't allow for the albums they put out the money for. For example, Atlantic took Lupe's Lasers, filled it with a bunch of electropop beats, autotuned the gently caress out of the vocals, and demanded that he simplify his lyrics. Also, "I Don't Wanna Care Anymore". We're gonna pretend that never existed. He may have gotten back at them with the first two singles from that album, but even those were the products of endless compromises. Then he dropped Friend of the People with much better beats and the level of lyricism that we expect from him and all was forgiven.

Schoolboy Q released his single (i guess) featuring Kenrick Lamar from his upcoming Habbits and Contradictions: Blessed All four of the dudes in Black Hippy can rap their loving rear end off and they have a good production on all of their tracks. They've got a bunch of mix tapes (the kind that are almost album quality but free) and the official releases all seem to be :5bux: on amazon mp3. Kendrick's section 80 has gotten the most press because its one of the best and universally appealing album of 2011 and his O.verly D.edicated mistake from last year is great too. Ab-Soul's album Real Thinkers is pretty amazing as-well and he's probably my favorite of them. Sounds like he would fit in Heiro or Living Legends without being a retread of their ideas. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGOhHA2gR0M I just got Jay Rock's Follow Me Home and on first listen its just as awesome as the rest. He's the most street/gangster member of the group but has the biggest name features on the track (Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, loving Chris Brown) but out raps all of them. The aforementioned Schoolboy Q had stole A$AP Rocky's Brand New Guy and his Setbacks mixtape is really good. They've got even more mix tapes I haven't gone through yet (there are 5 'from the vault' collections for Kendrick alone); anyone know other gems in their collection? edit: Also make sure you check out Noz's 50 best Brick Squad songs of 2011 snyprmag fucked around with this message at Jan 2, 2012 around 23:35 |

Pill's first two (e: three, even) mixtapes were REALLY good though; I hope he makes up with Freddie Gibbs and they can do more songs together. I don't like that song that he tweeted. The Rubberbandit posted:Pluggin my buddy's music, Ace Adams, which I have been doing extensive production on. I'm going to be honest here, not trying to troll... but 'Knights of the Crunk Table'? AND from Ann Arbor? Somebody got some fuckin wires crossed here cause there's not a single thing in Ann Arbor that could even come close to 'crunk'. This dude's got an uphill battle against an automatic negative image due to the Ann Arbor attachment. Nothing personal, but it's like a punk band being from Bloomfield Hills, there's just a certain amount of judgement attached to your area code. It sucks, but its true. And remember, before you get hype anywhere, you gotta lay the groundwork at home, and everybody in Michigan has an opinion about Ann Arbor, know what I mean? The content here is some freshman in college type poo poo. Not even, like, "I've taken my first semester of college courses, here's some vicarious knowledge that I'm parroting" but some incoming freshman, haven't left high school mentality behind yet type of poo poo. The lyrical equivalent of styrofoam packing peanuts, and is about as interesting. 'No question' had a lil' promise but falls apart at the refrain. 'Songs about U'....dude, I dont even know what to loving say about this poo poo. And 'Charlie Sheen' poo poo has been done to death. I don't mean to be discouraging, and I have no idea how many tracks this dudes ever made, but here's the only advice I could ever pass along: write and record for a year. At the end of that year take the best poo poo and put it out there and then see what people think.

To be honest, we have been writing and recording for almost a year, and these are the best songs we have completed ![]() I understand that being from Ann Arbor carries various stigmas, but we (The rapper and I) don't really feel it should hinder us from expressing what we want, and creating the music we want. There will always be people who don't like us, no matter what our hometown is. You're right about the content of his lyrics, in that they contain very little "content". Rick Ross only talks about being 'the boss', Wiz Khalifa only talks about weed. No, I am not saying Ace Adams is Rick Ross or Wiz. He is working on writing deeper subject matter, as all rappers should. Also, I've heard lots of good feedback from both Songs about U and Charlie Sheen... From people who I am not remotely friends with! Again, your criticism is well received, so thanks.
