If you don't know where a sample in a golden age or old school song is from, you can probably just assume it's from James Brown. Listen to his discography, it's good music and you get to geek out when you recognize a sample like three times a song.

Tried to pick 5 albums that work really well as coherent albums that don't really have weak points. Jeru the Damaja- Sun Rises in the East. This album has Preemo's best beats ever, and they are perfectly suited for Jeru's weird offbeat flow. My favorite rap album of all time probably. Black Moon- Enta Da Stage. Da Beatminerz are one of my favorite production teams, and they knock out classic beat after classic beat on this one. Buckshot kills it too, and 5ft's few appearances are fine. Main Source- Breaking Atoms. Great atmospheric production, Large Pro is on point, Nas makes his debut. This album is impressive because it's super long but still maintains a high level of quality.(the version I listen to has like 18 tracks, some of the bonus tracks are even better than the album stuff!) Goodie Mob- Soul Food. Really strong album conceptually, all the emcees are on point, and the production is super funky. Public Enemy- Fear of a Black Planet. The Bomb Squad throws out insane wailing beats for an entire album, Chuck D is still dropping science, and Flav says funny stuff and has two good solo songs. Plenty of other good stuff out there though, this is all early-mid 90s but that's really the era to look at if you want strong albums. creamcorn fucked around with this message at 06:52 on Jun 16, 2011 |

kingcobweb posted:The rapping on that album is so stilted that I don't think it stands up very well now, honestly. I think the rapping probably sounded odd then too, Keith has always pretty much just ignored the beat in interesting ways and Ced Gee was never a great rapper (he's pretty decent on the first two Ultramagnetic albums, but then he became incredibly bad). I don't think it really detracts from the album though, it's supposed to be weird space rap from the future and it certainly doesn't sound like any other album from 1988. Final Fart Buttball posted:I finally heard Ultramagnetic MC's Critical Beatdown, and I think it's a great album. I'm assuming 90% of you guys have already heard it so I'm not trying to impress anyone, I'm just posting it cause if you're one of the small percentage of people who hasn't already heard it you should go listen to it now. I've heard it a couple of times but I don't even remember individual lines because I vibe out to it so hard Also if you've never heard Critical Beatdown then I'm assuming you've never heard the Cenobites album with Keith and Godfather Don (with special rapping appearances by Bobbito!). Yeah so I went to Rock the Bells this weekend and it was really cool, definitely go if you have the chance. Here's my Rap Report on it, the formatting is kinda weird but I couldn't think of a better way to do it: Black Star didn't show up, which sucked, but I still got to see a bunch of dudes. Ghostface, Raekwon, and Cappdonna were good, but I don't think Cappadonna needed to be out there- too many really distinct voices at once. Supernatural also came out and did a freestyle with the names of all the songs they did, it was cool. The Genius was great, and Killah Priest was a really good hypeman and he did his song from Liquid Swords too. Masta Killa and Ghost did a freestyle with those guys too. The RZA was wandering around too, and he ended up selling Wu-Tang chess sets for 200 dollars and getting free weed from the crowd. Black Moon was incredible, they jumped all over the speakers and ran around in front of the crowd. Buckshot is really good at freestyling, which I did not know. I even got to high-five 5ft cause I was in the front and have long-rear end arms, it was pretty sweet. They are also tiny, tiny dudes. Mobb Deep was really good too, Shook Ones was incredible with 1500 other people yelling the lyrics and Ron Artest wandering around the stage. ([url]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHVt8opG-68[Sound quality is awful, but you can see Ron Ron dancing around and I'm in there somewhere!) They also had Ras Kass, Too Short, and some other guy I couldn't see from my spot show up for a guest spot, which was cool. KRIT was really cool except for the retarded bros dancing in front of me and my friend for the entire set, those guys were dumb. Common was probably the biggest surprise for me, I'm not a big fan of his at all but he puts on a really good show and DJ Dummy is sick. Curren$y broke his foot somehow and Doom flaked out again. creamcorn fucked around with this message at 09:40 on Aug 23, 2011 |

It was at RTB though, he might phone it in more at a club. Probably worth $20 even if he phones it in though.

The Doo Do Chasers posted:I tried really hard to find production that sounded like what the Bomb Squad did on Fear of a Black Planet and AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted and someone pointed me towards Techno Animal. Those two albums have some of the most dissonant and heavy beats out there, I love it. Not as distorted or harsh as Techno Animal, but I get a similar vibe (even though I hate all the rapping on Techno Animal's songs). I'm sure you've probably heard it before, but the Son of Bazerk album produced by the Bomb Squad kinda gets forgotten sometimes and it's really good too. The beats aren't quite as aggressive as the PE/Cube album ones, but they have a funky element to them that I'm a huge fan of. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teUV81t3pzc&feature=related creamcorn fucked around with this message at 23:33 on Mar 1, 2012 |

The Apollo Brown/ O.C. album is really drat good, I hadn't heard anything about it when it dropped but it's got very solid production with a nice, warm throwback sound; O.C.'s on point too, and it's a rarity now hearing an album that's just a cohesive work from one mc and one producer. It gives the album a lot of thematic and sonic consistency - give it a listen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DW0QFi971Cg http://mellomusicgroup.bandcamp.com/album/trophies
