Royce Da 5'9'' is great at riding a beat.. Royce Da 5'9'' - Dinner Time [feat. Busta Rhymes] Tech N9ne spits insanely fast, best example of this is ~2:30 of: Tech N9ne - Crybaby Speaking of Tech... Anyone hear about the collabo he's doing with Tyler the Creator? Definitely looking forward to that

When I think southern rap I think Nappy Roots.. Not necessarily their sound, but their content and overall vibe. I'm also a white kid from the midwest so take it for what it's worth... A friend turned me on to this song awhile ago though, Collective Efforts - Let It Alone.. It's relatively old, but captures the same vibe I get from Nappy Roots. Again, I don't claim to be any sorta Dr. of hip-hop, I just like what hits my ear drum right Edit: Where'd this B.o.B diss even come from? He just trying to feed off Tyler's hype? I never took him for a diss track type of artist.. And yeah, I can see why.. Just a lame track lyrically, the beat wasn't bad though.. Bet Tyler would tear it up haha Roymega fucked around with this message at 12:00 on Mar 28, 2011 |

Bluetooth human being posted:Royce Da 5'9" and Slaughterhouse is actually the reason I started listening to rap in the first place. It started with The One, and just grew from there. Yeah Royce is a good start into hip-hop honestly; not too-mainstream, but not exactly underground, and he keeps good company. As far as good Tech songs, I agree with caveman, Anghellic is vintage Tech, he's got a lot of hidden gems too... Rock N' Rollin' Leave Me Alone Red Nose I'm A Playa poo poo Is Real I respect the hell outta the guy, being an aspiring musician myself, building his label from the ground up and selling a million albums without a major label is admirable no matter if you like his music or not

Whoever recommended the new Self-Scientific EP a couple pages ago (I think it was this thread?), thank you. Shits on repeat. On an unrelated note, Pusha T - I Still Wanna Rock [feat. Rick Ross & Ab-Liva] is such a sick song... "You know what fame is? Sittin' with the woman of your dreams and forgettin' what her name is/You know what pain is? They don't have the same feel as the early stuff with Malik, but they still stand up to other discs released at the same time. IMO, How I got over is the very definition of a sleeper. The more I listen to it, especially PORN's flow on Walk Alone, the better it gets. I actually liked the intro.. @Agreed: as far as "instrumentation" being a gimmick, what do you mean?

Agreed posted:There are people who (usually don't like rap, but) think that they've got something really special because they play instruments, unlike other rappers who just steal pieces of real music. It's a lovely viewpoint and the wikipedia sourced statement introducing them as "famed for still including live instruments" or something to that effect is 15 years old, so I'd hope that it's not seen as invalidating other rappers, just what they're on. Legitimate and cool, not better than "just because" though. Ahh ok, yeah I feel ya.. Invalidating a rapper for using live instruments? Nahhh, I always give mad props for artists that actually play instruments at their shows.. That's what music is.. I mean don't get me wrong, I love hip-hop, but it is (nowadays anyway) a genre overrun with samples and people that don't even bother learning anything other than how to chop other people's music to their liking

temple posted:Producers have been shying away from samples since hiphop started. I'd say this is the lowest point for samples, outside of maybe break beats or if you are someone like Kanye with a huge budget. Note: Mixtapes don't count as they aren't commercial and you can't sell them without getting into a poo poo load of trouble. Ok, I admit I over-generalized to try and make a point. Basically what I wanted to say was a lot of artists don't take the time to learn how to play an instrument anymore because it's easier to use a VST or sample to produce the same result.

Agreed posted:The history of "rappers just use _______, they should play real instruments" is kinda racist. There's a term for it that gets used, "rockist," because it diminishes the effort and legitimacy of hip-hop and sampling (which has a really rich history, you should check out the kind of effort that used to go into combing through record shops for old funk and soul records especially, finding a great, rare record could mean having a seriously hot beat) and promotes REAL musicians instead. But sampling is a form of musical expression. You don't just end up with the same thing that you had before, it's a new synthesis of the sample, everything around it, and the rapper's vocals. Right, I understand that.. I wasn't trying to say that sampling isn't a legit way of making music, I produce myself, so I understand a lot of what goes into producing good music.. I just don't appreciate when words are put in my mouth so-to-speak. Guess I just gotta get to know the posters a little better

And to see your nonsensical correlation between my "nonsensical" analogy and what I was actually referring to, I can see why you may think that. I was talking about the OP in which you depicted rap as "smoking blunts with lil wayne and doing songs with waka". Just because Drake is considered in the game, does not in fact make him a rapper, dude is an actor playing the part.. And vice versa with Death Grips.. Just because some people may think of them as a rap group, does not in fact put him in the rap game. Labeling music goes against everything music stands for, which is the overall message I was trying to relay here

Dude sat down right next to the door with a reciept hanging out of his pocket. I said "are you ready to pay your bill sir?". He jumped up all tweaky and was like "I don't have a bill", at which point the russian waiter dude came running over and yelled "you steal my loving tips!". The crack smoking gentlemen insisted he did not when it was quite clear that he had swiped the tips from the far table. The russian body blocked him, and we both proceeded to stomp him and kick him. At which point I mentioned we were being recorded by the store security camera, the russian replied he didn't give a poo poo, but this provided an opportunity for the tweaker to squirm out and pop up like a crack snake. He whipped out a syringe, stabbed at each of us a few times from quite close. I decided my tip money wasn't worth AIDS but the russian still kinda wanted to fight him, he chased him like another block. The police never came when we called them, as was thr routine on Friday/Saturday night. ahaha touche.. I'm from the meth capital in Iowa so I know all about tweakers, best believe..
