Do not post game spoilers in this thread, thanks! ![]() ![]() Steins;Gate is an adaptation of the very highly praised visual novel released in 2009 by 5pb and Nitroplus. Studio: WHITE FOX Director: Hiroshi Hamasaki (Texhnolyze) Number of episodes: 24 Airing/Streaming: The show is streaming on crunchyroll, so no posting download links in this thread. Story: Steins;Gate is about a group of friends living in Akihabara who accidentally build a time machine out of their customized microwave. As a result, they attract the attention of the secret organization SERN, who has been doing their own research on time travel. In order to save themselves, they must take full advantage of their invention. ![]() Rintarou Okabe (VA: Mamoru Miyano) is the eccentric leader of the group. He's prone to paranoia, talking to himself, and long-winded ranting. He often calls himself Kyouma Hououin, saying that "Rintarou Okabe" is a name that he uses to deceive the public. ![]() Mayuri Shiina (VA: Kana Hanazawa) is the second member of the group and Rintarou's childhood friend. She spends her free time making costumes and works part-time at a maid cafe. She's also a bit of an airhead. ![]() Hashida Itaru (VA: Tomokazu Seki) is the third member of the group and an old classmate of Rintarou's. Hashida is an experienced hacker and is also well versed in otaku subculture. Personal opinions: The first episode was surprisingly really good. Adaptations of Nitro+ VNs tend to be subpar at best, but with 24 episodes to work with and a competent studio at the helm I have high hopes that this one will turn out well. Mamoru Miyano is hilarious as Rintarou. The animation and artwork look fine and the direction is nice. The first two Bluray volumes have already been wracking up good preorder numbers, so a potential lack of funding probably won't be a problem. Hopefully this anime inspires a translation group to finally tackle the Windows version of the original VN. After watching episode 1, it seems like I'll be confused with how this time travel business is working for a while. But it also seems like the plot could be pretty interesting as well. I'm REALLY hoping this adaptation turns out better than the Chaos;Head adaptation did (that anime was a waste of great VN source material), but others that have played the Steins;Gate VN will have to keep us updated about that, since unlike Chaos;Head I haven't played this VN.

However since there is little indication that anyone is going to translate the VN at the moment, I guess I'd like to hear some VN readers weigh in on the overall quality of the adaptation as it goes along. Since watching the anime at this point appears to be the only way we'll get to experience the story in English.

I almost didn't watch this and it is now starting to look like the best show of the season. It is also good to finally have a confirmation that Dr. Pepper is an intellectual drink for the chosen ones.

I watched it again and I think it makes a little more sense to me now. First view I didn't even know that the main guy's actual name was Rintarou. What is the "Organisation", I assume the one he keeps referring to is just some paranoid delusion of his? I originally confused it with the one that keeps being mentioned in all the plot summaries but I don't think they have shown up yet?

The funny thing is, the emminent discoveries this year and next at Fermilab and CERN have a high chance of blowing the current string theory model out the door, so when she uses that as a conclusion for why time travel is impossible it's actually pretty weak, and anything as simple as "wait, you actually still think this universe is governed on super string principles? e: Regarding the trap: If this story goes "world line" route, then I'm sure he'll be sucked into a line where he is actually a she.

I don't remember a main character this goddamn entertaining since... I'm not sure. Last episode I was getting the Kyouma is John Titor vibe, and this episode the evidence was almost too straightforward, with the "told me young man would need it" thing, so I'm wondering if it's a red herring, or if the world lines actually changed such that 2010 John doesn't remember going to 2000, or 2000 John is neither Kyouma nor 2010 John.

Okay they can make me believe that they can somehow hook up a cell-phone to a microwave oven and create a time machine. But they'll need a drat good explanation for how they can have a programming language that only one single computer model can ever handle. If programs can be written in it then there has to be some documentation and a semantics, and if you have those you can re-implement it somewhere else. I refuse to believe that working examples of the computer exist and no documentation could have survived. Only potential explanation would be that it's some kind of quantum computer, but if that was the case then the programs couldn't be presented in a visual form without the quantum state of it collapsing. Yeah, phone-microwaves are fine, but magical computers aren't.

I think that's what they're getting at, not that it's literally the only computer capable of running it.
