Could that thing possibly tie Chaos;Head and Steins;Gate together somehow? I haven't seen Chaos;Head so I wouldn't be able to recognise elements from it.

It's probably a pipe dream, but I really want some of the main cast of Steins;Gate to have more than just a quick "oh hey! it's those guys!" cameo in this, something like there's a whole episode where the cast of the new show has to work with Okabe and Kirisu-tina to solve some problem or another.

That opening sure is bright and cheerful, so I can only assume that one of those robots has the destructive capability of Gunbuster and they accidentally take out a third of humanity or something.

drat it, the OP's not sung by Kanako Ito. They had such a good thing going!

The OPs for ChaoS;hEAD and Steins;Gate had some serious lyrical themes going on. ChaoS;hEAD's tended to be about illusions and delusions and Steins;Gate's were about the past/future, the infinite and finite, lonely observers, etc. My Japanese is kind of weak, but there's all sorts of space/sky themes and traditional uplifty shounen lyrical tropes. Plus the line "that worldline is a special place" got thrown in there when the divergence numbers were flashing on the screen. No overt ChaoS;hEAD callbacks that I picked up on, though.

...basically my hopes are way too high that this is going to be Steins;Gate 2 where Okabe/Kurisu wind up as head of some research group and the Robotics;Notes cast is doing some sort of high school project under them or something.

I rather like the voices. Okabe still sounds like a mad scientist, although a different flavor of mad. What's up with the music, though? Steins;Gate has a perfectly good title track, so why did they go with a Mayuri techno remix?

Also, dual BR and DVD. For some reason I didn't that that would happen.

Dub sounds alright, even if it doesn't matter a whole lot to me since I almost never actually watch stuff that way. I'm glad to see they didn't change one very important aspect of one of the characters.

So excited to actually be able to own this series.

Your bargaining posture is highly dubious.

I think the dub sounds pretty good. The only really overused guy is Sabat. I like that they had the guy who did Isaac from Baccano as Okabe. I think it's a good choice.

I just watched this entire thing, between the characters and the plot I'm probably going to have to play the VN in the future. I like how despite having a ridiculous premise it doesn't pull any batshit insane plot twists and gives you pretty much all the pieces to the puzzle just a few episodes in. The only question I have standing is why didn't I watch this before?

I'm already really looking forward to Robotics;Notes, and if Chaos;Head is anything like this I might end up giving that a go too.

I never thought I would be 'that guy' but I must say I am unimpressed with the dubwork. It's not the voice quality or anything really, it's just that everyone's voice was way deeper before. Not sure if it matters but Steins;Gate is the only anime I've watched the whole thing subbed.

That or treading lightly around the Japanese side since they're probably not technically licensed the copyright to use the materials for promotional purposes outside the regions they are licensed.

It matters a lot what language you saw it in first. In fact, that's almost the only thing that ever matters as far as dub vs. sub. You really have to open your mind and be entirely prepared for every single character to undergo a massive voice change and even then, nothing will sound as 'right' as whatever you're used to.

Robotics;Notes looks a lot more anime~ than Steins;Gate did. I think it's the hair. Also, I can't imagine what the main conflict will be from that synopsis alone.

I'm probably completely mis-remembering this, but didn't they hint that the delusions from Chaos;Head were not completely psychological? They were (theoretically) glimpses of the future?

Cityinthesea
Aug 7, 2009

I don't know if they were glimpses of the future... I'm just surprised that they're in the same continuity. maybe the Shibuya quake (and Chaos;Head) happened on the Steins;Gate time line? There was that 8 bit S;G game that dealt with the protag from C;H, but I think that took place on the same timeline from the ending of S;G. Chaos;head is just really confusing, which I think was on purpose, but it's hard to say what was real and what wasn't from it.

After watching the first three eps of the dub at Otakon, I gotta say that they nailed Okabe's voice. I forget the VA's name, but it's the guy who did Isaac from Baccano, and he did a pretty good job playing up the insane mad scientistness without delving into melodramatic.

Highlights were the bit where we first meet Rukako... IIRC, it was something like "Rukako Urushibara. A pinnacle of purity that a shrine maiden should espouse... but he's a dude. Graceful and skilled... dude." Plus they had some decent replacements of the Internet-speak that Daru delved out, and while it's probably tough to throw 2chspeak into English without turning into le randum xD memespeak I wish they did more. However, I am happy with his "all your base are belong to me!" when he gained access to SERN.

Also they kept tuturuu~ and preserved its delivery. Whoever the VA is for Mayuri is no Kana Hanazawa but they get the spacey femotaku quite well, and Faris' VA could darn well be a perfect English voice swap in terms of tone and delivery. Kurisu's VA turns up the deadpanning and at times sounds more like Daria, but this isn't a bad thing - it gives her the air of the cynic that she keeps in the original.

Seriously, if you hate dubs normally, the S;G dub is worth at least a three-episode test if it's streamed or something.

Okay, I just remembered the scene where Okabe has the dream about Mayuri where they're in a desert or something and she's talking about how she time-traveled with him millions of times or something. What the hell was that all about? I'm guessing that it'll be explained if/when I ever get around to reading the VN?

Cityinthesea

Not really, it was just as confusing in the VN.

What if all cats were THIS?

I actually attended Otakon as one of the Okabes, and I have to say that that dub was very good, but Mamoru Miyano is a tough act to follow. I'm also wondering how they'll adapt some of the more obscure 2chan memes to English.

One of the other Okabes even had a working divergence meter. It didn't use actual nixie tubes, but other than that it was really well done

There's quite a bit of Steins Gate related media aside from just the game and the anime. There's CD dramas, manga, an 8-bit game and eventually a movie. Is there a place where I can find a list of these along with a 1-2 sentence (non-spoilery) summary of their individual plots?

This dub is amazing. Daru is perfect, Christina and the girl with the cell phone are fine, Kyouma is... Different maybe because I just inherently internalize the tone of Japanese differently from English but it sounds different but still good. Myuushi is also spot on.
