I'm totally new to the game and installing everything (GOG and Open) right now! This isn't a big thread, just haven't gotten all the way through it. I read through the OP, though. Any advice for complete newbies? I played a ton of "X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter" growing up, as well as "X-Wing Alliance" down the road, so I know I like this sort of game, just haven't done it for years and years. I'll be keyboard/mouse-ing it the whole way, since I'm not in a position to run out and buy a joystick right now..

Good loving lord, this Open setup is taking FOREVER. I wish I had read not to do "everything" before starting, now I don't know if it's worth backing out of and starting over, or just letting it finish. FYI, I'm going by the PC Gamer info on the install. It's this month's "reinstall" game in their magazine. They posted this as a guide for setting up the Open mod, and it's held my hand through every process so far. May be worth tacking on the OP! http://www.hard-light.net/forums/in...p?topic=61606.0

Skyl3lazer posted:It's worth getting everything just because there's a lot of other campaigns and things that you get, and they're nearly all worth using. As for the other article I'll look at it in a bit but was there really a huge problem in installing? Well, no.. but isn't it nice to have validation that you're doing things the correct way? I've personally never loaded a mod for a game, at least not one this all-encompassing. It goes through graphics optimization, too, and potential stumbling blocks you may run into, like what launcher to use and how to make sure it's loading the correct version, which is apparently an issue. So it's worth mentioning at the very least. Edit: Christ on a cracker, I finished the purchase of the game at 2 p.m. on the nose, according to my e-mail confirmations of purchase. It's now almost 5 p.m. and I still haven't gotten past installing everything for Open. Hope all this is worth it! (I'm sure it will be..) Yay, it's working! I can see this becoming addictive... Mouse controls, though.. Blech. I feel like I keep having to pick up my mouse to follow things, but I guess it will get more intuitive as time goes on, just like fiddling with speed while flying. My first real mission and I bonked into the enemy fighters twice..

General Battuta posted:Try this. Take the text of the script there, put it in a text file, rename it to script_mouse-sct.tbm, and place it in the /data/tables directory in your FreeSpace 2 folder. (Create it if you don't have it). With that and some sensitivity tweaks, I'm getting the hang of it. Still feel like I get burnt to a crisp by enemy fighters. Is the starting ship relatively slow compared to some of your opponents early on?

So, not that I'm ready to leap into a mod campaign after only spending an hour or so dicking around in the main campaign, but where are all the Battlestar/Star Wars campaigns that were supposed to come with that massive download? I found some sort of campaign room from the menu, but all I saw was the main campaign setting. I'm fairly confident that I have the mod working since the explosions certainly don't LOOK like they're from 1999.

Ohhh, that makes sense.. No, I know nothing about Babylon 5, but I have started watching Battlestar recently. Only near the end of season 2 so far.

Dominic White posted:There currently seems to be a shader issue with some ATI cards (mine included) that the devs are a bit baffled by. It's not stopping me from playing the game, but capital-ship debris flickers completely white when the lightning effect zaps across it. That kinda sucks. Aside from that, it looks great with the visual updates. This is OLD news, but did you ever fix your debris flicking problem? I have it too..

General Battuta posted:Download this shader fix pack, and place the VP file inside it in FreeSpace2\mediavps_3612. Yep, that did it, thanks! I really like that you can't *always* win in this game, unless I'm mistaking something and they just takes your failures in stride.

I must really suck at this game... The Ravana can suck my nuts, I tried 7 times and couldn't take it down, so I skipped it. Oh well.

Faffel posted:Are you playing on a high difficulty? That mission was pretty easy when I did it... although all my wingmen died in the first 5 minutes. Where were you hanging out? It seems best to stay really close to the Ravana and blow up the waves of enemy ships as they come at you. I'm on Medium, I think.. Step up from the default it set it to, but it's skipped, so I'm not going back to it. It just seemed like every 10 seconds once I actually got close to the Ravana I got a target lock for enemy missiles, and I absolutely failed the "countermeasures" portion of the training. Like, they fired a couple missiles, I couldn't figure out how to get the countermeasures to actually help me not get blasted out of the sky, and the instructor was like "That's enough for now.." and moved on. So I spent the Ravana mission swooping in, firing my first pair of missiles, turning around to avoid the explosion, horrible "enemy missile launch" warnings, die a fiery death.

I'm in the middle of the "covert ops" stuff, on the mission where the Hamaka ports in do disguise what you're doing in the system.. not sure if I need to spoiler any of this, but it's just ship names, so who gives a poo poo. Anyway, the Hamaka- which I was supposed to protect- decides that when a new enemy cruiser around the same size ports in RIGHT loving next to it coming in at a right angle, they're just going to collide and both explode and kill each other. If would have been funnier if I wasn't supposed to be protecting the Hamaka, but it was a secondary objective and I don't feel like replaying the whole mission.. It was a fun one though! I'll catch it on my next go around. Edit: This game makes me want to rage.. I'm on the mission where you're testing the TAG system, and the Lucidity keeps getting bombed to bits before I can get in to help! The bombers come in on the opposite side of the loving galaxy while I'm getting picked apart by missiles, and I have to jet all the way across the loving battlefield just to GET to them, not to mention attempt to shoot their bombs out of the sky, which is next to loving IMPOSSIBLE, and try to TAG them with these stupid rockets that they keep ducking out of the way of. Even when I do manage to TAG them, it wears off before the stupid ship can burn them to a crisp. ARGH! TShields fucked around with this message at May 21, 2011 around 19:21 |
