Having the flu in general will make your body hurt a lot. It could potentially exacerbate any injuries. Note, this isn't even the Goon Doctor thread, so grains of salt.

As long as you can walk and it isn't bothering you too much, take some advil and go for it. If it is bothering you that much, see a doctor.

Oh - that "flu" ended up being mono. Which I'm still recovering from. I'm pretty sure I could reproduce that along the bottom of patella pain with the right volume and intensity of kicking, though. I just don't want to go there since it hurts.

Went to another MT class yesterday and I can definitely tell that I am better as a southpaw. After trying drills and shadowboxing as a righty versus lefty, standing southpaw made the punches feel much more natural.

Downside is that I think standing southpaw annoys my training partners. At least for pad work. Unless I'm imagining things.

Being new to actually punching things and/or faces, I think I screwed up last night. We were doing pad drills that involved different combos of jabs, crosses and hooks. I was doing fine until the end of class when I noticed my left hand was starting to hurt! It's still doing it today. It's a radiating pain that seems to start from where the index finger and thumb meet the hand and travels up through my wrist. If I make a clenched fist or flex my hand side to side, the pain gets worse.

What are the usual causes of this? I mean, I can safely assume it's a combo of terrible punching technique and possibly a bad wrapping job on my hands (I did ask this question to an instructor and he noticed my wraps were sort of loose). I kinda noticed in class that the looping style punches (hooks?) made me notice that something was up with my left hand, if that helps.

^Yeah, it could just be pain cause you're fat and just starting out. All of my advice is then worst case scenario poo poo. Give yourself some time to get used to the motions, but you should still ask someone at your club about it. When you're just starting out it can be hard to tell the pain of working something and the pain of destroying something.

Thanks for the advice. Yeah, I'm thinking you're right. Two days after my hardest training session, my knees are back to normal and my coach is helping me monitor the situation. I will ease off of heavy compound weight training on my legs for a good while because I'll be getting enough leg strength training during classes. Maybe just work on calves since I have problems staying off my heels.

Sounds like I should just do my best to concentrate on balance and foot placement as it seems like most long-lasting injuries result from quick, unnatural bends and twists and of course, falls.

Of course it does, but it doesn't matter

Wrap your thumb better and try to avoid the punches that cause that pain. Usually the other side of the wrist is weaker because there's less bone

It is a pretty bad idea. After a recent camp with Great Britain's boxing team we learned that that use two layers of cloth wraps and a foam knuckle pad for every training session. I wouldn't say everyone needs to be quite that extreme but once your hands get messed up they pretty much stay that way. Better safe than sorry.

Do you recall any single punch that put your wrist at a bad angle and caused a spike in this pain? If that's the case, then you should wrap more carefully to support your wrist. More importantly, it'll take practice so that every punch you throw has your wrist properly lined up behind the punch so it doesn't bend to a bad angle.
E: typo
If you're talking about the muscle between the base of the thumb and the base of the index finger, you might be wrapping too tight around your palm, squeezing the flesh.

Wrap your hands man, it's not much of a hassle and the wraps aren't expensive.

Also get some decent gloves, even if you don't train much. I used to have lovely PU gloves and i'd constantly have problems,
not hurting knuckles or ligaments, but i'd bruise my thumbs again and again when throwing hooks and hitting elbows or foreheads.

After switching to more expensive real leather gloves, i haven't hurt my thumb even once. The tight fit of my Twins gloves also really
helps stabilize my wrists, the lovely Everlast pair i used before couldn't even do that right.

Too dumb to be giving other posters advice in this thread. Especially since you realize your own stupidity and don't fix it.

i boxed for like 15 minutes and I can't imagine not wrapping for striking. Between the wrist injuries due to a weird punch and just the force you're putting out... you're nuts.
