I was thinking of joining a gym, MMA Lab specifically, in Arizona. Its a know gym with UFC guys and its close to where I live. Since it is well known, there's no concern about the level of knowledge from the trainers. But I was wondering if there are any down sides to going to a gym with a high profile and big stars. I am not a young guy who wants to get into the UFC. I just want to get fit and learn new skills. I'm already super intimidated at the thought of even entering the place but its just really convenient for me. Any average joes who go to these high profile gyms have any thoughts?

To present the other side of the responses to this: I joined an MMA gym last year with a minorly famous coach with the sole intention of getting in shape and brushing up on my stand up game. I'm a little older, and have no interest in competing, but I do have some years of sparring experience and I'm not a total slouch. After a month or so of the teacher feeling me out and giving me a lot of attention, he asked if I'd be interested in getting a match. After I said "no thanks", he pretty much ignored me from then on out. Turns out he only wants to train fighters he can send to money-making matches. Since then 99% of my instruction has come from the other students. I'm not happy about it.

Try to get a sense before you join if the trainer at your school is going to be one of those guys that only cares about the students he can send into the wood chipper.

Annoying thing of the day: The fist twitchers. (Could that be made into some sort of really creepy porn movie?) And I mean these guys who keep shaking or twitching their hands all the time before they punch. Or just all the time even if they will not. Obviously they have learned it somewhere. Like a movie or watching some sort of Muay-Thai clips where the fighters stalk forward, balanced on their rear leg, moving their fists up and down all day or whatever.

That just doesn't work very well when boxing or kickboxing or doing Savate or whatever. You are NOT going to catch anyone with a clever punch if you keep twitching your mitts all the time - and it doesn't neutralize the attack of your opponent either because they would be so alarmed by your constant fist twitch, when they discover you just do it out of learned habit.

And it's reaaally difficult to un-train people out of as well it seems after they first get the hang of it, having thought it's the right way to strike.

*fist shake*
*fist shake*
*PUNCH*

Yeah bro, I sorta saw that coming?

Sure it has it uses (like, when faking) but this becomes a serious issue when you are unable to throw a punch, any punch, without first having a seizure on your arm.

I was thinking of this yesterday after sparring yesterday. It's like... What are you doing? Some guys wave your fist around, shake their fists or stand absolutely still before doing some combination. Unfortunately my reaction is usually to freeze up and start wondering how I'll get hit now that he is going to try and hit me. And then I get hit instead of you know... Blocking or something...

So I guess it works against dumbasses like me :v:

instead of going to a doctor; go to a NURSE. They do a lot of the actual needlework and are in my experience, much more skilled with it. Your ear is going to be sensitive as gently caress, so get someone who can stab needles accurately and not to deep. If they stab the needle in wrong, it'll be worse than before.

Also twitch fist chat:
It's funny that, now with experience, you can see what newbies do. How they flail around and miss you when you don't even move because they do not yet properly understand the concept of distance and reach. It's a beautiful thing; like watching LARPers in the park.

Went to boxing training for a first time in years. For an sport where you can only punch poo poo's extremely hard: I started martial arts by doing karate for two years begore going to judo, so by doing kihon (basic techniques where you punch air) back then I can now deliver strong punches and combining it with the 7 years of judo and a year of combat sambo I can move, close in, move out of the way and back off, but because I have no sense of striking range whatsoever and I haven't really practiced hitting a moving target and I can't grapple, the result is an really interesting mess. Like wow. I am able able to spar effectively with good strikers who can't grapple too well, because going in isn't too hard if they aren't used to avoiding in and in their attempt to strike there is always movement to every which way so throwing and submitting is easy and I combined that with poin-fighting type of straight long punches so I am doing okay or mediocore as long as I can grapple, but now, I'm basically going against my nature. I was slow when doing slips and bobbing and weaving because my stance was too wide - partly from karate and partly from combat sambo - and I always tried to step 45 degrees forward when slipping, because I wanted instictively to get in. When I realized I should only move my head and narrow my stance, I realized that this would be no good for combat sambo, because the narrow stance makes you weak for takedowns. I had fun and I'd like to put at least one boxing session to my week schedule, but I'm wondering if I will just pick bad habits from it. What do you guys think?

The coach sure was a character, reminded me of a combination of Rocky's coach and Master Roshi from Dragonball.

Bow and arrow choke. If no gi then just stay on top and don't worry about it, sometimes it's just not worth trying to submit someone that much bigger than you.

The bigger someone is, the more likely I am to use shoulder locks. Works for fat guys and big muscular guys. Probably has something to do with constantly moving to the sides to not get stuck under them.

So I guess it works against dumbasses like me :v:

I move around a lot hands and bounce around a bit, most of my coaches tell me to stop but I don't stop moving when I throw, I set down obviously to generate power but I move my hands a lot, it's a habit I got into because it always helped me parry with my hands better. It's not a major movement but just a little one, it reminds me to keep my hands high and I find I can slip and cover better. I tend to get good success with combinations anyway. At the end of the day you're going to come up against more experienced guys who're going to have good defense if you move your hands around when you're sparring or if you're completely static unless you're throwing. You're better off learning to set up your power punches and setting your combinations than worrying about whether your selling whether you're going to throw something.

I can't think of a fighter off the top of my head to give you an idea of what I look like when I punch and kick things/people I spose Dan Hardy style movement would be pretty close to what I try to do. I find if I try to stay more still and shuffle forward and hold my hands more still I'm too focused on that and not focussed enough on what I'm doing.

If you practice them I like wrist locks against big fatties and heavy dudes. most of them go right to the size advantage and don't realise how open their hands are to being controlled. I find triangles come on really quick against big guys, I struggle to lock them up because I've got stubby hocks instead of legs, but once they're on they tap quick. Otherwise I end up getting smothered.

Do it. It's freaking great. I guarantee that two or three of those moves that you'll learn will be your bread and butter for a few years. You'll pay attention like a boss, because you just paid, the teaching style will be fresh and different so you're paying attention, the moves will be the bread and butter of the guy, he'll have taught it several dozen times already so he really knows where to emphasize and how to explain his moves.

You know, when I started the plan was just to meet up with the gwanjangnim on the weekend mostly, then practice a bit during the week but I really liked it and to be honest it kind of led to tons of improvements in my life in every way. So, excluding the occasional day off for whatever reason I go 6 days a week. About an hour on week nights, then three or so hours on Sunday. I also do two hours of taekwondo throughout the week, mostly just for the exercise.

It's all pretty intense and hard but I can say for sure that I am a very different person because of it than I was 9 months ago. I've tried a few exercise routines in my life, lots of different things, but nothing has really made the improvements like this has. I bet it would have been a lot different if I was in America, but as a foreigner here it's helped so much. My main social group now is the guys I train with when it used to be sad people at depressing foreigner bars. My body is so much better, my confidence is much higher and I feel like it's based in some real accomplishments now. I could go on and on.

Love doing judo but watching the competitions is just bleh. I spar with the old rules, so when you see high-level people having to deal with the grip restrictions and no leg grabs it's just such a waste. It's starting to look very artificial when you can't do things that you should be able to do: I understand time limits and the rules for saafety, but judo is quickly becoming a grappling version of point-fighting.

Yeah, and they implemented that years ago. NOW you can't take your opponents grip off with your both hands, or was it that you can't take it off with your hands at all. Also you can't grip your opponent on the same side with your both hands, like sleeve + same side lapel unless you throw immediatedly, the same rule applies when you grap a sleeve and his back, reaching the "same side" over the spine. poo poo's just stupid.
