I'm on my second year on the Astraweb $96 dollar deal and love it.

So, I've been looking at backup solutions for a bit, and the combination of all those passworded rar sets uploaded by spammers and the Wikileaks insurance file have made curious about the feasibility of heavily encrypting important personal files, uploading them to some random group, and just keeping an offsite copy of the AES256 key with the NZB.

Is this stupid? What group would you suggest I use?

At the rate Astraweb is going the block accounts to fill up the incomplete parts will end up using more data transfer than the main Astraweb account.

Are people really having that much of a problem? I'm into my second year with Astra and can count on one hand the number of times something couldn't be repaired from the par set.

Cheapnews is giving out 10gb trial block accounts. 900+ day retention, no creditcard needed.

Looks like the trial only lasts for a week even if you don't use all 10gb.

Hopefully the last 'dumb usenet newbie' question - can I connect to and use both the US and EU servers if my provider of choice has them? If so, is there actually any benefit to doing so?
Actually I've often noticed a benefit in doing so as sometimes something is missing from one and present on another. At one point I actually thought the provider was strategically removing parts from DMCAed files so that while enough was removed to make it impossible to get the file from either, you could still get it from both. Didn't last though.

Hey, I'm noticing a lot of incompletes on new files using supernews with a blocknews account as a backup. Is there anything I can do about this or is how things are now.

Try adding a block account from TweakNews.

Tweaknews seems incredibly sketchy.
Not sure why you think so. They have a free trial 10GB/10 days. If you go the 10 days without buying a plan apparently they send you a coupon or something but I didn't wait that long.

I have sickbeard set to download propers, it doesn't delete the episode it's replacing though. Is this how it's supposed to work? I don't see a setting to delete files.
It does for me. Since the new file gets renamed to the same thing as the old file, it ends up replacing it. I'm guessing you use release specific information in the renaming scheme?
